Reading series - Figurative Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

How do you all like the new blogger dashboard? I totally love it. Gives me the comfort of using MS Word right here within blogger.

This painting is from my long ongoing series "Impressions of a European Summer", a series of images that capture the spirit of summer in this part of the world. Loved the pose of this woman reading happily without a care in the world that I just had to paint her. The different angle was fun to paint too. Do you like it?

Sand Castles - Palette Knife figurative painting by Nithya Swaminathan

This week's challenge at Daily Paintworks is a fund raiser for the cause of Japan, with the theme being "Home".  Home is where the heart is, and to me, it is always in Madras, South India. That's the city that I grew up in and the one that is closest to my heart. It being a coastal city, the first image that comes to my mind when I hear "home" is undoubtedly the beach.

The beach has been an integral part of our lives and no trip to Madras is complete without a visit to the beach. Since we are a tropical city, the water is always warm and soothing and I simply LOVE standing at the shores with the waves lapping up my feet. I can sit there for hours together and just keep watching the waves, which I mentioned in my painting "Wave watching" too.

This painting is a precious memory from my childhood. This painting is done with the palette knife and is textured. I have uploaded a hi-res image at the DPW site and you can zoom in to see the details. This feature is really cool! You can see the texture generated by the palette knife.

I hope you like the piece. Bidding starts at $50 and I ship worldwide. Please spread the word.

Surrender - Original Textured Painting by Nithya Swaminathan

I've been very sporadic of late, mainly due to a lot of work pressure! I have been painting pretty regularly, but not managing the time to blog. I hope to be a lot more regular going forward.:)

This painting is a also part of my ongoing series "summer observations", a series inspired by the European Summer. This whole series captured the spirit of summer in this part of the world, and consists of people enjoying the sunshine to the fullest.

Reading by the lake II - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

I am sure you'd have known by now that I badly need some sunshine. Desperate really, and it is just the start of winter. I am so done with the snow already! In Germany, it rains all through the year. When it isn't raining, it snows. Phew! No wonder no one here ventures even to the supermarket without checking the weather.

So that cribbing aside, I wanted to get to this piece just to fulfill my mission of not having unfinished pieces during the turn of the year. Started this one too during summer actually, soon after the Reading the lake I. I started 4 pieces at once, in similar square canvasses. Unfortunately only one went to completion and the others were lying around. Well, not anymore. I loved this scene too, an elderly couple having a relaxed afternoon at the lake side, book in hand and some chatter. What more does one need in life! I wanted to capture that "perfect afternoon" feeling.

I wanted to keep away from the brush as much as possible, but had to pick it up for the bodies. My knife was screwing things up and the brush *had* to intervene. The backdrop, the umbrella and parts of the bodies are with the knife. Some tweaks have been done with the brush. I am not entirely happy with it, the perspective of the umbrella is bothering me a bit, I might tweak after a few days. When it was going on and on without any perceivable change, I decided to stop it for the time being. Must see how it looks in a couple of days.

I enhanced the color saturation a bit and modified some of the colors from the original scene. This one too is like the previous painting, with the paint continuing to the sides of the canvas too. It can be hung as it is without a frame and will still look great. Better still, two from the series can be hung together :-) Your feedback is most welcome.

After my craving-for-sunshine paintings are done, I want to get a couple of still lifes done with holiday decorations and stuff. We do not celebrate christmas, I do not decorate a christmas tree. Despite all that, the season tempts me to buy something and a still life is the perfect excuse. I hope I have the time.

"Reading by the lake" - Original Painting by Nithya Swaminathan

We had gone for a cycling tour with a couple of friends a few weeks ago, along a picturesque route dotted with small fresh water lakes in the Rhine-Neckar region. Summer is finally truly here and we could go out leaving the jackets/umbrellas at home. Phew! And here I was thinking we are going to go from winter to winter bypassing everything in between :0 Wherever you go in Germany, a water body is never too far away and that's what I love about this country. In my view this holds good for Europe as a whole, the parts that I have visited. Be it a river flowing right in the middle of a bustling city or a lake out of nowhere. We managed to cycle about 40 kms, which is not much but a great deal for us considering how unfit we are! My husband and I rarely put ourselves through any form of exercise and we were quite surprised that we could cycle so much, that too with the daughter sitting behind us alternately. It became too unbearably hot in the afternoon forcing us to call it a day.

During the ride we stopped by this lake for a while, just to relax for sometime and munch on some snacks. There were hordes of people by the lake, some taking a swim, some just reading a book, introducing little children to the water and so on. A visual delight for the figure painter I'd say. I clicked a few references and this is the first one. I have one more in progress, and hope to do a few more.

I still have not mustered the courage to do the figure with the knife. Just did an initial layer with the knife for the woman, and later switched to the brush. Makes life a lot simpler that way. The surroundings though are done entirely with the knife and I hope to slowly get to a stage where my figures also are done with the knife.

There are some things that I tried with this one - a square canvas to start with. I haven't painted on a square canvas after my apples series more than a year ago. I felt it would suit this image and just went ahead. Also, usually I paint the sides with a neutral color - black or brown. This time I thought black would look ridiculous with this canvas, as it has such bright colors. So went ahead and continued the painting itself to the sides too. Too bad that I did not take a photo from the side, will do it tomorrow. The painting flows over to the sides too and doesn't look odd even when hung without a frame.

I quite like how it turned out :) Let me know what you think.

Yellow Coneflowers - Original Palette Knife Painting by Nithya Swaminathan

Some time ago I was whining that I had never seen the beautiful coneflower and that all my paintings were only from reference images by others. Looks like someone heard that and planted a flower just along my way. I did not go searching for it at all, like I normally do with the other flowers. Alone my way to the bus stop, I spotted these awesome yellow coneflowers. And my initial reaction was one of immense surprise, as I did not expect them in this color. In any color other than purple so to say. I loved them and clicked quite a few photos. This is why it always helps to carry the camera around at ALL times, irrespective of whether you're on a reference clicking trip. It pays to have it handy at all times.

And then I had to go out somewhere and what do I see right in front on me on my way? Absolutely gorgeous purple coneflowers as well. It was as if I was destined to enjoy them that day. What a lovely flower! Do I even have to tell you that there are more purple beauties to come?! You know that too well, don't you? :-)

Yellow Daisies - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

This painting is one of my favorites. It is a pattern that the extent to which I like a painting is inversely proportional to the amount of time spent on it. I think I completed this in about 45 mins or so. And I really like it. Let me know what you think.

Facing the sun - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

How about some yellow for a change? Any other color than red actually? After doing so many paintings with red and exhausting a few tubes of paint, I finally decided to pick up another color. Let me know what you think.

Day Dreamer - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

I love coneflowers, something about their unique color that really attracts me. The magenta-purple petals with the orange center make it a riot of color, and extremely pleasing visually.

This painting is from a reference in the WetCanvas image library. It seemed to me like someone lost in her own world and thoughts and that explains the title. These days, what appeals to me most about the coneflower is that it is a pleasure to do with the knife. Let me know what you think, and yes, there are a few more to come. :)

Mood off - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

This is a painting of a little poppy in a nearby meadow. Backside of a little poppy to be precise. I loved painting this one. I have titled it thus as it reminds me of my child, when she turns away from us when she is angry. These days, my little one speaks pretty good German and fights with us in German too. If we say or do something that she doesn't like, she goes away saying "Ich bin niemehr deine Freundin", which means "I am no more your friend!" That is exactly what was in my mind as I painted this. As though the little flower was asking me to give a break to clicking and just get away :-) However, whether the flowers like it or not, I ain't giving up clicking so soon, do not worry.

Only the flower has been rendered with the knife, and the background is done with the brush. Though I aim to have a semi abstract look with all my textured florals, I like it to border realism. That's why I have kept the background as realistic as I could, by using the brush. This also makes sure that the foliage does not compete for attention with the flower, but is strong enough to get the attention it warrants.

This is the first of a series of poppies, there are many more to come :-) Let me know what you think.

Purple Coneflowers - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

I love coneflowers and find that they are just great for painting with the knife. The structure of the coneflower lends itself beautifully for abstract rendering with the knife and the textures turn out great. It's a pity I did not do more of these lovely little flowers, and I intend to. Let me know what you think of this one :)
