Original oil painting Napa Valley vineyard landscape by Karen Tarlton

I always enjoy painting with bright colors and lively strokes of thick oil.

I'm fascinated by the clear California light and arid beauty of the wine country.

Original oil paintings Birch Trees and Wild Horses by Karen Tarlton

It's time for some thick paint and color!

Winter sunshine peaked through the clouds today

and between snow storms I painted.

Hope they inspire!

Karen Tarlton Original oil painting - New Orleans French Quarter Jazz - impasto palette knife art

One from the archives!  This painting is sold but I do paint New Orleans all the time and have prints for sale of this painting!  I'm very concerned about the flooding of the Mississippi and hope New Orleans is spared!  Hope all is well and my heart is with you all!

Rich thick palette knife work!  Many plein air painters were painting outside in Monterey while the iceplant was blooming and the weather fantastic last week!

I'm feeling nostalgic this Mother's Day eve. My girls are all grown up....18 and 16 and I don't know whether to cry for joy for what wonderful young women they have become, or sob in sadness for the fact that they are young women and not my little babies anymore.

I'm sure I'm not the only mother with this story and these empty nest feelings. Our oldest is off to college in a few months. So this is the long windend inspiration for my new series of beach baby paintings! Makes me happy to paint these and I'm hoping they make someone else smile too. Many more in the works, but this is one of my favorites!!

Happy Mother's Day!

Just got back from visiting California...San Diego and Santa Barbara had some great surf and I took lots of photos to paint!  Many more summer beach scenes are on the way.

These are two of my favorites, in rich texture and cool blue hues!!!

I love these two quotes and they seem to suit my prolific style: "I dream a lot. I do more painting when I'm not painting. It's in the subconscious." ::: Andrew Wyeth :::

"When I work, I work very fast, but preparing to work can take any length of time." ::: Cy Twombly :::

Bold, rich palette knife movements and color play generate deep texture and energy as the sailboats emerge from an almost abstract rainbow background.
