"Memories of Maui" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on canvas

It has been some years since we went to Hawaii and I was interested in viewing the sunset.  What a sunset it was, the sky on fire, the island across from us dark, the faint glimmer of reflections in the deep waters.  Unlike any other sunset I've seen, this is my interpretation.

"Memories of Maui", 16"x20" palette knife oil painting on canvas, $640 includes s/h in continental U.S., Paypal accepted, contact me for more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com

"Maui Beach: Surf and Clouds" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

My husband and I traveled to Hawaii some years ago and stayed on the island of Maui.  There is just nothing in the world more soothing to me than the pounding of the ocean as the waves crash heading to the shore.  When I painted this miniature, my travel memories kicked in and there I was, lying on the beach once again, blissed out by the incredible sounds.  Ah, gotta love the ocean!  (I am, of course, landlocked in my own paradise, but painting revives the good memories...)

"Awa'awapuhi Trail, Kauai, Where Sky Meets Ocean" by Karla Nolan

I just recently rediscovered this artwork in my husband's office (aha!) and decided to post it here today because I finally realized that I was proud of how it turned out.  That could sound strange, I suppose, but sometimes when I attack the loaded palette knife to the panel, I'm not sure whether I will like the completed product.  That was the case here.  This was painted in 2009 after we had gone to Kauai and hiked the said trail in the title.  It was a form of torture both up and down that trail because it was tedious in both aspects.  Going down was dangerous, the fear of slipping and falling.  Returning to the top was agonizing because it was so steep and seemingly never ending.  Either way, here it is for you gaze upon, I hope you enjoy that incredible view!  Wow!

Wish I Were Here, Original Oil Painting by Karen Balon

"Wish I Were Here"
8"x8" Oil on Canvas
For a Larger View or to Purchase Click Here

Not quite my usual subject or genre but I loved painting it!  I went with a more impressionistic feel with this painting by not painting as much detail as I normally do which was both refreshing and freeing.  The piece is called "Wish I Were Here" because the ocean calls to me.  There is nothing like the energy of the ocean to wash over you and take all the tension of the world away for a moment in time.  The sounds, smell and feel of the ocean is equal to nothing else on this earth for me.

It's spring break around here and I'm having a stay-cation this time around. Relaxing with my daughter, playing a little tennis and painting a lot! I love what I do so this is the perfect Spring break for me. I do miss the sand beneath my feet though so I painted this lovely memory :)

Ulupalakua View, Maui - Janet Bludau

This 6x6 oil on board was completed earlier in the year.  As with many of my paintings I have used both palette knifes and brushes.  I love the combined effects of the rough and smooth, thick and thin.
I joined the Palette Knife Painting group online not too long ago so you haven't seen this one yet!  I lived on the island of Maui for 5 years and this was the view from a friend's porch in Ulupalakua.  The water you see in the distance would be Makena Beach.  This is a beautiful part of the island and shouldn't be missed if you find yourself there!

Tree Shopping by Janet Bludau

This painting is done primarily with a palette knife but with a brushed foreground.  It measures 8x8" and is 1-1/2" thick on board.  Inspired by a Christmas tree farm on Maui, it is painted from memory, rather than one of my photos.  Most people are surprised to know there are Christmas tree farms in Hawaii but on the slopes of Haleakala, with the higher elevation, the temperatures can be much lower than Southern Ca where I now live.  It was wonderful to prowl around the farm and choose your tree rather than visit the corner, paved lot like I do now!

"That's Hawaii!", by Karla Nolan, palette knife, brush, oil painting, linen panel, miniature

A quick note here -- my husband name this one -- I may ask for more assistance in titling in the future!  This title captures the essence of the little (miniature) painting -- what more can I say?

"That's Hawaii!",  palette knife/brush oil painting on 4x6" linen panel, $40 includes s/h in U.S., contact me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com and I'll mail you a Paypal invoice -- s/h in other locations to be determined at time of sale, of course.

I have set up a second website, Paintings On Glass, to showcase my paintings on glass.  There is a piece in progress as I type with sailboats.  That's a true challenge, showing proper structure and making the water look good.  Be sure to check it out, along with my new blogspot, listed below.
