Original Hydrangeas Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art
A few months ago I never would have attempted to paint hydrangeas! I went into this painting trying my very best to be loose... Just know I did have to scrape off the first four smaller flowers and repaint them as my brain wanted to paint every petal! I'm really happy with the entire process though and thrilled with the way it turned out. Hope you like it!

Italian Sunflowers, North Light, Gray Day
8"x6" oil on linen mounted on archival panel
$200 unframed

A really nice one from 'the vault' that I had almost forgotten about! We
planted this variety of Italian Sunflowers in our garden in previous
years. I think I do miss them! They are a smaller flower head, and a
creamy - buttery - pale yellow that goes really nicely with the
hydrangeas we grow. Hmmm...already thinking about what I'd like to grow
next summer!! Cut flowers are so wonderful to bring into the studio to
paint!

Blue Hydrangea Bird Bath by Roxanne Steed
8"x8" oil on archival panel
For more information about this painting, follow this link, or contact me here.
My back yard is a haven for birds of all kinds.
They seem to love it and we love having them here.
We trade a few small luxuries all the time, food for song....
water for brilliant flashes of color.
So far, it's a great relationship!

Lavender Blue, Dilly Dilly....Knife/Brush painting by Peg Whitacre
I love all the "old songs" which I guess sort of dates me, but I really don't care! As these hydrangeas began to come to life as a painting I was immediately reminded of that old song title and decided that it fit the subject matter quite well! Allow me to take this opportunity to wish everyone and their familie and friends a very Merry Christmas and the hope of 2012 being the best ever for all who plow the fields of fine art and craft. In the grand scheme of things it will be just exactly what each one of us chooses to make it for ourselves. Happy New Year!!

Blue Hydrangeas...Palette Knife Painting by Peg Whitacre
Sorry to be "off the air" for so long but my computer has been doing strange things, such as having a bad hard-drive and while getting a new one losing everything that was on the old one. Lessons about back up sure apply here and I have learned that lesson well!! So, although still not operating properly this silly machine is at least working a bit! Today's offering is a simple painting of three blue hydrangea blossoms done completely with palette knife. It was great fun to do and turned out well. It is 8x8 inches and is available for sale. Contact me at pwhitacre@att.net to purchase. Enjoy!

Hydrangea by Roxanne Steed
12"x12" oil on gessoed masonite archival panel (Ampersand's gessobord)
"Solitude is as needful to the imagination as society is wholesome for the character." -James Russell Lowell
I spent this morning under a shady archway, where this side of the house is in shade during the morning. Our yard is planted with many hydrangeas, but this one has turned out to be the biggest. The blossoms are in various shades of deep purply blue, some of them leaning more towards magenta, and some of them a bit paler blue. There's some plantings of lamb's ear near the base of this huge shrub, which is a nice accent along our garden path.
Being able to stand and really see your subject for a couple hours, really gives you an appreciation of the tonal qualities you are looking at. The warms and the cools in the foliage, as well as the blossoms; with some areas grayed down from being in deep shade. I can't think of many better ways to spend a morning!
This painting is available directly from me at my DailyPainters.com gallery store.

Early Morning Light by Pamela Blaies
When I get my day started early, I am always glad I did. I enjoy the morning, it is quiet, cool and the light is so beautiful. In this piece, the early morning light is shining through the gate onto the lush blue hydrangeas. What a beautiful way to start the day.

Have the Blues? by Pamela Blaies
7" x 5"
Oil on Canvas
Did you know that hydrangeas change color depending on the ph balance of the soil? More acid makes the petals turn blue and more alkaline makes them turn pink and all variations of purple in between. I like to keep mine blue and this year they were a great shade. Thick impasto texture in this painting make the lush blue petals come alive.

SOLD
One of my favorite flowers! There are so many beautiful almost irridecent colors in this flower that it is perfect to paint. I love how it changes color as the summer progresses. My 30 year old plant in Arlington VA changes from pink to blue and the blooms are the size of cabbages!
Lots of rich thick oil on this for added texture!

Italian Sunflowers North Light Gray Day by Roxanne Steed
8"x6" oil on Belgian linen mounted on museum quality board
"If the English language made any sense, lackadaisical would have something to do with a shortage of flowers."
- Doug Larson
It was gray and overcast today, which makes for a nice cool silvery light in my studio. I'm still thinking about Hensche's teachings from Camille Przewodek's workshop. Cool light, warm shadows...there's a lot of wonderful color in shadows on gray days.
In the meantime, I have a commission painting started (hints....wedding, Ireland, hmm, what could be more romantic??) I head out tomorrow to go 'fetch my mom' and bring her up here to visit....so it looks like my posting will be a bit dicey for the next several days...unless I find a Panera....and a good bit of free time. I think I might have some 'chores' with mom before we head back up here. Hubby will hold down the fort up here & keep the flowers growing.
