I tried out Gamblin's Fastmatte Alkyd Oil Colors for this painting and loved it. I started by brushing on an acrylic underpainting to block in the major shapes and colors. From there I switched to my palette knife and the oil paints. Except for a few small details at the very end, I used the oil paint in its original consistency without diluting it with mediums or mineral spirits. With the fast-drying properties of the paint, I was able to go into recently painted areas rather quickly to add additional color and details.

Despite the fast-drying paint, a lot of time went into this painting (not to mention the trip from North Dakota to New York City where I spotted this scene). Both the trip and the experience of painting this contemporary urban landscape were a lot of fun. I hope you discover some of that joy in the painting!

I'm gradually trying bigger sizes of city scenes hoping to avoid the intimidation factor going to a really large canvas size all at once. Reminds me of when I was in art school and the drawing teacher would have the models come into each class with less and less clothes on. I guess he was breaking us in so that life drawing class and naked bodies were not so intimidating all at once.

Before we left for recent trip to New York, we kept hearing that song in our head by Alicia Keys and singing it around the house.

New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There’s nothing you can’t do
Now you’re in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Hear it for New York, New York, New York

Perhaps, I am also inspired by the start of the new season of Mad Men?

In a few weeks, my very kind and generous friends are letting us stay at their glorious loft in NYC. I painted this from a photo I took looking out their back window the last time we visited. Way in the back you can see Ricky Martin's place. Maybe he'll invite us over?

It's pretty easy for me to get inspired in New York so I'm excited to do more of these quick paintings after our visit.
