This scene reminded me of Willie Nelson’s song “Don’t Fence Me In.”. This was right in the center of a whole lot of nothing. Just open space in every direction. What an escape from the hectic pace of everyday life! I hope you’ll take a moment today to stop and enjoy the peace of it all. I did.
This little jewel is painted on a prepared masonite panel ready to frame or display on a shelf easel. Watch this blog tomorrow for a return to my paintings done with a brush, too.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

Kata Tjuta is a palette knife painting of the red sand gorges in the Kata Tjuta National Park in Northern Australia. The cool greens at sunset were bursting against the orange and purple shadows, making this one fun to paint.

Sunset oil daily impressionist painting by BECKY JOY

Yesterday was once of the most incredible sunsets I think I have ever seen. It wasn't the setting sun itself, but the clouds in the east that the sun was shining on. As I said yesterday, Arizona has the most incredible sunsets during the summer. The clouds were big monsoon clouds. There was variety in the texture, big billowy and almost transparent thin clouds. I wasn't prepared for what I saw, no camera, no cell phone, no paints, just in the car to the mall. I had to stand out in the parking lot and watch the sunset instead of going inside. It was absolutely beautiful. Right now it is raining like crazy here. Its been a while since we have had some real serious rain. Its kind of fun and exciting when it does happen. Also the air smells so sweet with the smell of the desert plants. Love it!

As Time Goes By, Geraniums, is a new oil painting drying on the easel this evening in Flower Mound Studio. I received a note from a client this evening who had purchased one of my large sunflower paintings for his wife for their 40th wedding anniversary. They received the framed painting in the mail today and were delighted with it, and said at first they were a bit nervous buying art online, because they had never done so before. Now, he said, they were very glad they did. What an honor that a painting I created will commemorate such an important event in their lives. I hope it gives them years of smiles.

This is all that I got done today as far as painting (a lot of errands to do today). I did some wiping off of the canvas and starting over. Some days just don't go real easily. I've been going through photos and sketches pondering what to do next for a larger painting. I haven't decided yet. Hopefully, tomorrow will bring some new ideas.
I am now offering these wrought iron display easels free with each small oil study (5x7 or 6x6) purchases. The edges will be finished so that it will not be necessary to frame the paintings. It also gives you another place to display your paintings besides just the walls.
Monsoon season is here in Phoenix. It is really clouding up in the afternoons and more humidity. If you have never seen the summer clouds in the desert, they are magnificent. They are the best thing about summer here.

At the top of the Mountain oil by BECKY JOY
ON TOP OF THE WORLD 5X7 plein air oil $100.
For the last 5 days I've been camping in Zion and at Brian Head, UT. I was wonderful getting away to some cool weather and away from the moving and putting things away.
This painting is one of the plein air paintings that I did in Brian Head. I didn't get very much accomplished as far as painting. I didn't bring the main colors with me that I always use. I had a lot of odd colors to work with. I had cleaned out my bag and thought that I put the right colors in, but what I got instead was a lot of frustration. Anyway, I hiked a lot more than painted and I probably needed that more.
Tomorrow I should get back to work along with some errands that I will be doing. So, I will talk to you all later.

Summer Flowers - Lily #1 by Nithya Swaminathan
This original painting is a heavily textured palette knife painting from my ongoing series of lilies. Though the poppies themselves are summer blooms, they were kinda bordering spring and summer I would think. Maybe indicating the start of summer. The gorgeous day lilies on the other hand stood for all things summer. What with their fiery hot colors anyway! I was completely smitten by the orange-red lilies and did them in so many variations. At one point my entire neighborhood was full of these lilies that they had to be painted over and over again. Let me know what you think.

'Attempting To Launch The Curragh' By Irish Artist Maria Noonan-McDermott
'Attempting To Launch The Curragh' was a commission piece for a dear old lady who was celebrating her 90th birthday.She had a passion for the work of Irish artist Paul Henry and her favourite painting was entitled 'Launching The Curragh', which was a view from Achill Island in the west of Ireland.
I wanted to give her something unique, not just a copy of the painting, so I worked on a more personalised version by adding in her three grandchildren.
She was delighted with it, her first original painting.

This was actually painted outdoors at night, on location. I conducted a Plein Air Workshop at this location recently (see the photo with some of my students setting up). Then I returned to capture the full moon rising at night.

is an award winning artist who paints exclusively with a palette knife. She holds a fine art degree and has worked as a professional graphic designer for many years. She began painting in oil again after taking a palette knife workshop through the Copley Society of Art in Boston and was immediately hooked. It's been a busy weekend in Flower Mound Studio, celebrating the hubby's birthday and coming home to a neighborhood with no electricity last night. It was an interesting way to learn that we could not get into the house, because we had no key to the storm door or the back door, and the garage opened only with the use of electricity. After a few hours in the dark getting acquainted with the mosquitoes, the CoServ folks were there to save the day, or the eve.

ABANDONED COUNTRY STORE, TOM BROWN OIL PAINTING

It's hard to imagine why some business concepts fail to thrive. It may have something to do with the naming of the place. For example this little roadside shop with a sign reading: “FOOD GAS BAIT”. Perhaps that wasn’t very appetizing to some people.
I love exploring remote back roads and finding little country stores and abandoned buildings with an interesting history. Especially places that may have seen better days, but appear to have been unique in their time.
I always carry my oil paints and easel with me at times like this so I can create paintings of these glimpses into the past on the spot (plein air painting).
In this painting I deliberately kept the colors subdued and used lively, painterly strokes to create an interesting surface texture with richly applied, juicy oil paints. Most of this painting was done with a palette knife, and a brush was used for portions of it.

"Avalon Dunes" oil 6"x8"
There are very few things I like better than heading to the beach early in the morning with my box of paints. I love the way these dunes greet me right before I hit the beach. ($188.)
Painting is a passion similar to someone motivated to throw a perfect fast ball or win a marathon. It takes some natural abilities and a whole lot of work and determination to get it just right.
My inspiration to paint is from the beauty I see in my day to day life. Sometimes that amazing beauty is discovered in a simple bin of onions purchased from a farmers market, or the inspiration is found traveling through the southwest, beachcombing on the Jersey shore, or exploring through Spain. Regardless of where I am, there is always something wonderful to paint. As a result my paintings are mostly created ‘en plein air’meaning, on site and from direct observation, not from a photograph. During very cold winter months I will take my smaller plein air paintings and use several to create a larger piece. The common relationship shared between my plein air and studio paintings is that they were inspired from the simple beauty of our lives.
I feel quite blessed to have a loving family who overlooks my messiness while I am absorbed in a painting and on a quest to make one stunning piece of art.

Another road painting done with my trusty pochade box and palette knife. In the middle of noplace particular there is an official stop sign here. For no known reason. No crossroad. No driveway. Nothing. Just the stop sign. It’s a mystery. I simply HAD to paint this one. I hope you like it.
I still paint with a brush and will continue to show those paintings as well, but in the next couple of days I’ll also be featuring more of these small palette knife paintings done while on the road. This little jewel is painted on a prepared masonite panel ready to frame or display on a shelf easel.

Cottage Windowboxes - by Roxanne Steed

I know there's a trend here. I've always painted what I love- whether places, people, or things. The gardens I'm most attracted to are little vignettes of cozy places, that feel like home....nothing too stuffy or formal, something you might see from the comfort of your lawn chair....or a sight that invites you in....
These window-boxes are from the shops where I have some of work, "Artisan Framing & Gallery" up in Marlborough, CT. It's such an inviting colonial style/farmhouse looking structure, with a nice front porch! Our plein-air exhibit is up through August, if you haven't had a chance to see it yet!
Well, as I mentioned in a recent post, I'm off to a workshop this coming week. Not sure if I'll have time to post or not. I'm going to study with Camille Przewodek! I've admired her work for so long and can't wait to learn some new color insights from her! I'm so looking forward to this! Hope hubby can fend for himself in the kitchen while I'm gone!

Having painted on most every surface imaginable, at this time I work primarily on canvas, board, and paper. Though my style remains quite diverse, I believe I have the heart of an Abstract Expressionist, or even more accurately, an Action Expressionist, as I am most definitely an "action painter". Each painting is a journey , dictated by primarily by my current thoughts and emotions, be they happy, sad, peaceful or frenzied.It is a mysterious relationship, and is thrilling when the painting finally reveals itself, and our private journey becomes a story to share.

We had gone for a cycling tour with a couple of friends a few weeks ago, along a picturesque route dotted with small fresh water lakes in the Rhine-Neckar region. Summer is finally truly here and we could go out leaving the jackets/umbrellas at home. Phew! And here I was thinking we are going to go from winter to winter bypassing everything in between :0 Wherever you go in Germany, a water body is never too far away and that's what I love about this country. In my view this holds good for Europe as a whole, the parts that I have visited. Be it a river flowing right in the middle of a bustling city or a lake out of nowhere. We managed to cycle about 40 kms, which is not much but a great deal for us considering how unfit we are! My husband and I rarely put ourselves through any form of exercise and we were quite surprised that we could cycle so much, that too with the daughter sitting behind us alternately. It became too unbearably hot in the afternoon forcing us to call it a day.
During the ride we stopped by this lake for a while, just to relax for sometime and munch on some snacks. There were hordes of people by the lake, some taking a swim, some just reading a book, introducing little children to the water and so on. A visual delight for the figure painter I'd say. I clicked a few references and this is the first one. I have one more in progress, and hope to do a few more.
I still have not mustered the courage to do the figure with the knife. Just did an initial layer with the knife for the woman, and later switched to the brush. Makes life a lot simpler that way. The surroundings though are done entirely with the knife and I hope to slowly get to a stage where my figures also are done with the knife.
There are some things that I tried with this one - a square canvas to start with. I haven't painted on a square canvas after my apples series more than a year ago. I felt it would suit this image and just went ahead. Also, usually I paint the sides with a neutral color - black or brown. This time I thought black would look ridiculous with this canvas, as it has such bright colors. So went ahead and continued the painting itself to the sides too. Too bad that I did not take a photo from the side, will do it tomorrow. The painting flows over to the sides too and doesn't look odd even when hung without a frame.
I quite like how it turned out :) Let me know what you think.

Late Day Sunlight On Coneflowers

There are certain times of day when it's fun to see what gets illuminated in the garden. As the light moves around the house from sunup until dusk, it's like a showcase of various points in the garden. Around late afternoon the stems of these coneflowers become lit up, and seeing the colors that come out of this is really fascinating to me! Our childhood brain might say "flowers have green stems" but if you really look at how light hits certain ones, you really have a lot of color in them!

I loved the distance in this scene with the flat field going into the distance. The shadow of the tree also added a lot of interest helping to frame the painting. I changed the color of the building several times before settling on this color. If I had made the building brighter in color, your eye would have gone to that. I wanted you to go back into the distance and move around.
I got a lot of painting done yesterday and today finishing a couple of 11x14's which I will reveal later.
I will post later.

Yellow Coneflowers - Original Palette Knife Painting by Nithya Swaminathan
Some time ago I was whining that I had never seen the beautiful coneflower and that all my paintings were only from reference images by others. Looks like someone heard that and planted a flower just along my way. I did not go searching for it at all, like I normally do with the other flowers. Alone my way to the bus stop, I spotted these awesome yellow coneflowers. And my initial reaction was one of immense surprise, as I did not expect them in this color. In any color other than purple so to say. I loved them and clicked quite a few photos. This is why it always helps to carry the camera around at ALL times, irrespective of whether you're on a reference clicking trip. It pays to have it handy at all times.

And then I had to go out somewhere and what do I see right in front on me on my way? Absolutely gorgeous purple coneflowers as well. It was as if I was destined to enjoy them that day. What a lovely flower! Do I even have to tell you that there are more purple beauties to come?! You know that too well, don't you? :-)

Red Day Lilies

Well, this quote really gave me cause to grin...and yet give some forethought as to how awful it would be to reach the point of not being enthusiastic about anything! One thing that I'm definitely enthusiastic about is summer- flowers, food, sunshine, heat! all of it! There is just an abundance of wonderful things to catch my eye and paint this summer, my neighbors RED day lilies are just one of them. And another one of those things I notice every morning on my daily walk.
