Abstract Sunrise Painting, Palette Knife Abstract, "Intracoastal Sunrise" by Carol Schiff, 14x18x1.5" Oil SOLD

I painted this abstract sunrise painting after spending the night on the boat, anchored at Mosquito Lagoon.  It was a hot night with no power on the boat and mosquito's everywhere!  We started out the next morning in the dark and soon saw this gorgeous sunrise.

Namibia Impressions Coastal Morning by Marion Hedger

I've decided to take part in another 30 paintings in 30 days challenge hosted by Leslie Saeta. I have a love/hate relationship with these challenges - I like to see the new body of works at the end and making sure I get into the studio each day but the self-inflicted stress well... it is not so much the painting, it's the posting on the blogs and social media that I find taxing.

My first painting for 2017 is another Namibia Impressions of the sunrise on the coast line just after the fog has lifted.

This painting evokes the various colours of the landscape, where the horizon and sky merge. Even in the evenings the air is hot. The background is blended paint that has been enhanced with impasto palette knife work suggesting the shimmering colours seen on a hot day.

"Natural Textures" Abstracted Aspen Tree palette knife painting by Niki Gulley

In this painting I wanted the focus to be on texture. Usually I paint with a lot of color, but I opted to use a limited palette on this piece to really concentrate on the peeling bark of the aspen trees. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Natural Textures is loaded with layers and layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in extremely close on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and energy. At the end, I had to throw in a few of my signature strokes of color – a splash of gold, some touches of lavender, and just a dab of fire-engine red for added excitement and unexpected color twists.
