This painting has a new home!  This is one of my Wildflower Landscapes that I painted in 2014.  I worked on a series of them, and have explored many possibilities with this subject matter.  I am starting next year out with a paint challenge, and hoping to have a creative and productive 2015.  I think I will paint whatever I feel like painting...with Roosters and Cows at the top of my list.  I hope you all have a safe and fun New Years Eve!  Kay

Dancing Poppies, Monica Burnette, Oils on Canvas

Painting poppies provides pleasure to this painter.  Not to mention the opportunity to use a lot of "p" words. And red paint. Love the red paint.

Gladiolus - Palette Knife Artist Judy Mackey

"Gladiolus"
28x22 inches, Oil on Canvas
Available for purchase -- Click Here.

I wanted to paint something "quiet" more dreamy - so I did this very lavender/blue painting of glads.  There are just a little touch of red here and there but it may be a little tough to see in this smaller photo of the painting.

Summer Flowers - Lily #1 by Nithya Swaminathan

This original painting is a heavily textured palette knife painting from my ongoing series of lilies. Though the poppies themselves are summer blooms, they were kinda bordering spring and summer I would think. Maybe indicating the start of summer. The gorgeous day lilies on the other hand stood for all things summer. What with their fiery hot colors anyway! I was completely smitten by the orange-red lilies and did them in so many variations. At one point my entire neighborhood was full of these lilies that they had to be painted over and over again. Let me know what you think.

Yellow Coneflowers - Original Palette Knife Painting by Nithya Swaminathan

Some time ago I was whining that I had never seen the beautiful coneflower and that all my paintings were only from reference images by others. Looks like someone heard that and planted a flower just along my way. I did not go searching for it at all, like I normally do with the other flowers. Alone my way to the bus stop, I spotted these awesome yellow coneflowers. And my initial reaction was one of immense surprise, as I did not expect them in this color. In any color other than purple so to say. I loved them and clicked quite a few photos. This is why it always helps to carry the camera around at ALL times, irrespective of whether you're on a reference clicking trip. It pays to have it handy at all times.

And then I had to go out somewhere and what do I see right in front on me on my way? Absolutely gorgeous purple coneflowers as well. It was as if I was destined to enjoy them that day. What a lovely flower! Do I even have to tell you that there are more purple beauties to come?! You know that too well, don't you? :-)

Radiance - Original Palette Knife poppy painting by Nithya Swaminathan

I was in a dilemma whether to do poppies in groups or focus on individual flowers. Then decided that I will do them bigger focussing on the different forms than do a group. I had done poppy fields earlier anyway. One thing that I love about the poppy is that it's texture resembles crumpled paper. And I do not mean the feel of touching it, as I haven't touched one, but the appearance. It oozes texture and screams to be painted up close. Perfect for working with the knife. And do I need to even mention that red mesmerizes me like nothing else can? The various reds give me a high every time I work, no wonder a collection of my work looks like a big mass of red with hardly any other color to see.

This entire series of poppies uses the same palette - Cadmium Red, Cadmium Deep Red, Alizarin Crimson, Buff Titanium and Lemon Yellow. A little bit of Titanium white occasionally. So lured I was with the warm palette that I have done about 30 of them in no time. I love how they look together, so much that I was ogling at the collection on my table. Tried to take a combined photo of all paintings together but they did not fit in :) Let me post them one by one and do let me know what you think. There are a lot many more to come!

Two shaded - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

This painting was one of the quickest of irises, I chose not to even tweak it a bit with a brush or anything. Just with some knife work, I was kinda happy with the abstract effect it had and decided to stop it. Do let me know what you think. :)

And please do take a look at the other textured iris paintings on my blog.

Day Dreamer - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

I love coneflowers, something about their unique color that really attracts me. The magenta-purple petals with the orange center make it a riot of color, and extremely pleasing visually.

This painting is from a reference in the WetCanvas image library. It seemed to me like someone lost in her own world and thoughts and that explains the title. These days, what appeals to me most about the coneflower is that it is a pleasure to do with the knife. Let me know what you think, and yes, there are a few more to come. :)

Mood off - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

This is a painting of a little poppy in a nearby meadow. Backside of a little poppy to be precise. I loved painting this one. I have titled it thus as it reminds me of my child, when she turns away from us when she is angry. These days, my little one speaks pretty good German and fights with us in German too. If we say or do something that she doesn't like, she goes away saying "Ich bin niemehr deine Freundin", which means "I am no more your friend!" That is exactly what was in my mind as I painted this. As though the little flower was asking me to give a break to clicking and just get away :-) However, whether the flowers like it or not, I ain't giving up clicking so soon, do not worry.

Only the flower has been rendered with the knife, and the background is done with the brush. Though I aim to have a semi abstract look with all my textured florals, I like it to border realism. That's why I have kept the background as realistic as I could, by using the brush. This also makes sure that the foliage does not compete for attention with the flower, but is strong enough to get the attention it warrants.

This is the first of a series of poppies, there are many more to come :-) Let me know what you think.

Purple Coneflowers - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

I love coneflowers and find that they are just great for painting with the knife. The structure of the coneflower lends itself beautifully for abstract rendering with the knife and the textures turn out great. It's a pity I did not do more of these lovely little flowers, and I intend to. Let me know what you think of this one :)

Burgundy Iris - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

All these Iris paintings that I have done so far are from references by others. I had never paid close attention to the flower until this Spring. In fact, florals were just not my thing until recently, so never bothered to take photos of them. One fine day I started a painting of a waterlily for the heck of it, and have been churning out flowers ever since. And after all my iris mania, I have taken so many more photos of the irises over the last few weeks. I even visited a nearby Iris garden and got some really nice shots. I will be starting with many more of these gorgeous flowers, this time from my own references. I can't wait!

This painting is a part of my ongoing series of Irises done with the palette knife. To view more paintings of Irises, please hop over to my blog "Textured iris paintings".
