New Bluebonnet oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Rhapsody in Blue” ©2010 Niki Gulley
Oil on canvas • 30” x 40”

When I was a teenager my great aunts and grandmother moved to Texas and we would come down to visit them when we got the chance. I remember the first time I saw a massive field of bluebonnets and I was awestruck by the expanse of color and amazed that such tiny flowers when in mass could actually look like a large lake from a distance. I wanted to relive those family memories and recreate the exciting explosion of azure and crimson in Rhapsody in Blue, taking this cool weathered farm house in Marble Falls and painting it engulfed in one of our best bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush displays.

Rhapsody in Blue has been chosen as the signature painting for my upcoming exhibition at the Frisco Municipal Complex, in honor of winning Best in Show at Frisco’s Arts in the Square. Located at 6101 Frisco Square Blvd., Frisco, TX 75034, I will be exhibiting 20 of my newest oil paintings for the month of September. Here is my interview in Frisco Style Magazine about the upcoming show and some background on myself and my paintings, friscostyle.com/index.php/component/content/article/43/189-august-2010-issue. I hope if you’re near Frisco, you can stop in and see the exhibit!

Moonlight oil daily painting by BECKY JOY

MOONLIGHT 6x6 oil on canvas is available for $110.

To purchase this painting go to my blog.

Today besides painting this little one I finished the painting that I painted on my Ustream show on Tuesday. I made some changes that I didn't feel were working. I needed to darken the foreground field, I moved the sunlight up a little higher and just refined and finished the painting. I have this painting posted on my website, www.beckyjoy.com

I've also started another painting that I am reworking. I should have it done tomorrow. It seems that every six months or so I look back on some of my paintings and want to change some things about them. I try to convince myself that that is good, but it sure would be easier just to move on.

Turquoise Vortex oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Turquoise Vortex” ©2010 Niki Gulley
30” x 30” • oil on canvas

Growing up in Chicago, our brutally cold winters would feel like they lasted forever so my family tried to vacation along our tropical coasts whenever possible. I loved this week we spent together – the cathartic rhythm of the ocean waves lapping against the shore as dad and I tried to ride each crest as close to the beach as possible, feeling the cool sand squish between my toes and fingers while building sand castles together, and enjoying the peacefulness at sunset as the gorgeous fireball dropped down from the sky and cast diamond-like reflections across the ocean’s surface.

Turquoise Vortex recreates that magical moment as the sun starts to descend and illuminate the water’s peaks and makes everything sparkle. Using a circular composition and bold colors enhances that feeling of motion and rhythm while suggesting the awesome energy and power found in nature.

If you’d like to learn how to paint landscapes or “loosen up” your technique, join me this fall in my adult art classes. Registration is open and there are only a couple of spots left, so e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com for more information,

A New Season (commissioned work) - by Roxanne Steed

8"x6" oil on Belgian linen mounted on museum quality board

"If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden!"
- Claudia Ghandi

One of my collectors posts the most wonderful quotes on Facebook... this is one she listed that I had not heard before & thought was profoundly beautiful. Thanks Jamie, for sharing these wonderful thoughts! It goes so well with the story I'm about to share!

I had promised at some point I would share the 'big reveal' of a recent commission. This was a very special occasion and meant a lot to me to be able to fulfill this. A dear friend of ours was retiring from the Navy after many years in the Navy's submarine force. He wanted to commission a painting as a gift to his wife (as I well know, when the service member serves, the whole family serves). She is a master gardener and for the longest time the running joke was, "I want to live some where long enough to grow asparagus." (as apparently it takes at least 3 years to get a decent crop of it). As submarine service members, we are usually transferred at the 2 or 3 year point to the next duty station. So....in this painting, he requested a still-life with these 3 elements - red roses for love, an anchor symbolizing the Navy, and of course asparagus- symbolizing the stability from moving they hope to now have! Ohhhh- this would be a challenge to put these three together, but once I had sketched out several ideas, I could easily see what composition would work best. I am so excited to share this picture and story with you...and am honored to be a part of such a wonderful gift for a couple that is very special to our family! "Fair winds and following seas!", and all our best wishes in this 'new season' in their lives!

Today's painting "A New Season", and is an 8"x6" oil on oil-primed linen mounted on museum quality board. It is a commissioned work for dear family friends we are proud to have served with in the US Navy!

Hope you get a chance to get outside and smell the flowers today! ****Tomorrow I hope to show you what I pulled in from my garden! ....woohoo, what a bounteous harvest!! Yeah, gotta love summer!

Tree, water reflection oil painting by BECKY JOY

REFLECTIONS, a 6x6 oil for sale on my website for $110. To purchase the painting click here.

I used both the palette knife and brush in this painting. I use the brush first to put thin paint on, leaving some of the strokes. The palette knife is in the foliage and ground. By using the brush in the water I get smoother, glassier reflections. It really makes the water lie down flat. This is from a photo that I used to paint the painting "Moonlight" which was in the OPA National show. I used the tree with a reflection, but took a lot of liberties. This version is entirely different and a little closer to reality.

Last night I had my second broadcast on UStream. Time really slipped by. I didn't realize that I had been on for about two hours. There was a good group of people participating in the chat. I really enjoyed it. I'll be back for next Tuesday at 4pm PDT. Hopefully, as time goes on I will improve the show as I learn more. I'm going to experiment with a different camera now.

Oh, and I will post the painting probably tomorrow that I did during the broadcast.

Hot & Hazy Summer Morning, Tiffany Farm, Old Lyme, CT by Roxanne Steed (sold)

8"x10" oil on Belgian linen mounted on museum quality board

"Every morning I wake torn between a desire to save the world and an inclination to savor it. This makes it hard to plan the day."
- E.B. White, writer

Monday morning I planned to meet up with the CT Plein Air Painters at Tiffany Farm, in Old Lyme, CT. It started out steamy, grey and hazy....and heated up to just hot, sunny & hazy! By the time I finished I had nearly melted into a puddle....turned out to be quite a hot day. I knew I was going to be glad to keep this fairly small. I stood at one edge of a corn field, separated from the cows in the next pasture below. The whole field stretches downhill to the barns & silos, the distant tree-covered hills were quite hazy in the early morning, though it burned off as the morning progressed.

So, I had just set up, when another van pulled up & one woman asked, "By any chance are you Roxanne Steed?" gosh, now that's a surprise! (she recognized me by my visor!)...It turned out to be Jackie White, one of my artist friends on Twitter - who I had not met face-to-face yet! What a delight - we have a lot in common- besides painting, a love of Ireland...and daughters who are VERY into Irish dance! She had come to paint that morning, too!

It has been very fun over the last several years to actually meet face to face with artist friends and collectors who I've come to know on-line. By the time we get the chance to actually meet, we all feel like we've known each other quite a long time! Ah, the power of the internet - bringing the world closer together!

Hope you get a chance to get outside and smell the flowers today!

Montgomery Sidewalk, by Carrie Jacobson

Montgomery Sidewalk
By Carrie Jacobson
Oil on canvas, 10x30, sold

On Saturday, a group of painters from the Wallkill River School in Montgomery, N.Y., went out into the historic village and painted from 9 a.m. until noon. Then, we framed our paintings and they were auctioned off, still wet.

The event was a fund-raiser for the Village of Montgomery Bicentennial. It was really fun for all of us painters, and for passersby and buyers, too!

I had a very busy day painting, framing and getting paintings ready for a new gallery that I picked up this weeked. When I was in Zion hiking, I met a man that was plein air painting. We got to talking. He owns a furniture store and gallery in Dallas. He told me to send me some images and information about me. I did and he loved them. So, I'll be sending paintings to a gallery in Dallas. Who would expect to pick up a gallery while hiking. Not me!

I also wanted to let some of you know and remind you that I will be on ustream painting from my studio tomorrow at 4pm PDT. Tune in and chat with others in the audience and ask me questions. Shoreline New England Summer Afternoon by Roxanne Steed

8"x10" oil on Belgian linen mounted on museum quality board

"Your purpose in life isn't to arrive at a destination where you find inspiration, just as the purpose of dancing isn't to end up at a particular spot on the dance floor. The purpose of dancing - and of life - is to enjoy every moment and every step, regardless of where you are when the music ends."
- Dr. Wayne Dyer

Today's painting "Harkness Summer Afternoon", and is a 8"x10" oil on oil-primed linen mounted on museum quality board. Sunday afternoon was one of those perfect summer days that make you wish it would last forever!
They were setting up for a wedding behind me, a kite club festival was being held on the grounds along with all the picnickers, walkers, etc, touring through the garden on this weekend afternoon. What a happy buzz in the air, a true celebration of life!

This painting is already sold - it was commissioned as a wedding gift for her dear friends. I am always moved and so grateful to be a part of special commemorations in people's lives.

Canadian Cowscape, by Carrie Jacobson

Canadian Cowscape
By Carrie Jacobson
Oil on canvas, 48x60, $1,500

In June, some of you will remember, a friend and I traveled to Atlantic Canada on a painting trip. We saw these cows on the Gaspe Peninsula of Quebec. It is a gorgeous place, open and bright and lightly populated. Behind me, just across the road, was an open field and the ocean. It's a rare place when seaside land is used for grazing cattle!

Cape Escape by Ann Gorbett

Cape Escape
by Ann Gorbett
Oil with a palette knife on artist board
8" x 8"

I finally took a break from the sun and surf to do some plein air painting while on vacation. What wonderful weather we have had this week so far. I included some more photos to give you a sense of our quintessential cape surroundings. The place we rented is right near the path to the beach. People leave their wagons and other things while they carry their beach gear down the stairs. Our place is to my left.
While I was inside taking a lunch break, some onlookers stopped to take a peak at my progress.
I hope to get some more painting time in. Today is a little rainy but we're going to try to get 9 holes of golf in later this afternoon. I do not want this week to be over!!

Weighty Matters, Hydrangeas, Apples & Scale by Roxanne Steed

16"x20" oil on Belgian linen mounted on museum quality board

"I think a painter is happy because he is in harmony with nature as soon as he can express a little of what he sees....."
- Vincent Van Gogh

I am so happy we planted hydrangeas! This is their second summer in our yard, and they are doing really well! We've got two varieties, a peegee hydrangea, with the white puffy heads that are so heavy with blossoms, they are draping magnificently over our picket fence! The other variety is a beautiful purply blue...with some of them going a rather hot-fuschia color depending upon the soil! I was experimenting with changing up my knife technique on this one...and of course studying the way the light falls in my studio window that faces north (seems to be a constant source of delight for me!).

Hope you get a chance to get outside and smell the flowers today!

Sunset Marsh, Eastern Shore Pleinaire by Roxanne Steed

8"x10" oil on Belgian linen mounted on museum quality board

"Art is a personal commentary on nature..."
- Charles W. Hawthorne

Several of us in Camille's workshop decided to meet up for dinner on Tuesday evening (of last week), and head out to paint the sunset over in St. Michael's. The light changes soooo very fast, so it's a challenge to keep the composition simple, indicate your big shapes, and get them down fast!

"Summer Night" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Okay, I know, I know, I know, I know already!!!!!  It's Summer!  It's August!  It's hot in summer and in August -- dare I say more?  I thought it might be fun to put the heat to the canvas in this sunset -- I've seen plenty like this one, too!  I can tell what's going on here -- by the time August arrives, I know I'm mentally preparing for Autumn.  Autumn and Spring are my two favorite seasons....temperatures that are more moderated are for me.  Winter and Summer are so extreme sometimes -- not always in Colorado -- it varies day to day.  However, it's slowly by surely creeping up on us -- a new season.

"Summer Night" is a 5"x7" palette knife oil painting on canvas panel and costs a mere $70  (including s&h in N. America) -- it's not framed but that's easy enough to rectify -- you can either lean it up against the wall, a shelf, a small easel, or indulge yourself with a wall frame -- nothing to pricey about any of this and in this lousy economic times -- why not splurge on yourself?  E-mail me at KarlaNolan@
gmail.com for more info, Paypal preferred, of course!

Rural Farm Scene by BECKY JOY

LIGHT ON THE FIELD oil 5x7 This painting is for sale on my website for $110 which includes the small black wrought iron display frame so that framing in not needed. To purchase this painting click here.

The scene is from the Sierra Madres in Mexico, but could be almost anywhere. It was late afternoon with the sunlight hitting the field and trees. There were bushes along the fence and the field that had yellow blooming flowers. I'm not sure what they were, I hadn't noticed them up here before. The climate was a high desert climate and looked much like northern Arizona. You can see the thick paint from the palette knife and the smoother brushwork. This gives more dimension and depth to the painting. I'm from the school of thought that paintings should have variety in every way, texture, size, color, warm/cool, light/dark, etc., etc.

I got some other painting done today. One that I had sketched out and blocked in yesterday. It is one of 50 for a large project that I have been working on. I'm still not ready to divulge the secret work.

Today I posted some images on Fine Art America for prints and cards. Check them out at http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/becky-joy.html

Transitional Tones oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Transitional Tones” ©2010 Niki Gulley
12” x 12” oil on canvas

I created these birch trees with palette knife and extremely thick oil paint to achieve texture and suggest the energy found in nature. The image is painted around the sides of the 1.5 inch deep gallery wrap canvas so that it looks three-dimensional and can be hung as is without a frame for a contemporary look. These chunky birch paintings look great in pairs and threes.

Chewy - Palette Knife Poodle

Chewy was 17 years old when he went to the rainbow bridge a few years ago. He had been my sister's beloved baby for most of his life. He was an extraordinary little guy, always mellow, always full of love and fun. When it was time for me to take the dreaded public speaking course in college, I presented a method demonstration using Chewy as my model. My topic was dog training. He was so well behaved, most of the students did not even realize he was sitting on top of my desk until the class was well under way. It sure helped me get through a terrifying assignment to have a cute little Chewy as my prop. He stole the show, too, of course!

Monday Sun & Shadows, Plein Air in the Artist's Garden by Roxanne Steed

10"x8" oil on Belgian linen mounted on museum quality board

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
- Eleanor Roosevelt

It's so good to be back home. As I mentioned in my last blog post, I've been away at a workshop with Camille Przewodek over the last week, down in Easton, MD. I plan on writing a summary of the week for fellow artists that are interested in her work...and explain our link to Monet! Look for that in the next day or so. I'm still playing catch up here at home, trying to make time for both the painting AND the blogging!

When I set up Monday to paint here in my front garden, I thought back to the previous paintings I did there last year. My peegee hydrangea has gotten thicker, but a bad wind storm the other week really was destructive to this poor thing. It broke a couple branches, and the remainder of them seem to sag a bit under the weight of the flowers. The basil I planted is hiding some of the phlox, and is the size of a small shrub! The big blue pot with the purply, reddish grasses is doing well, but I preferred the plantings I had in it last summer. Sooooo- in gearing up for next years flowers (and paintings), I can see I need to start moving some plants, open up some space for other plants (more lavender, too, I've found a great location where it thrives!).

Trees with sunlight daily oil painting by BECKY JOY

LATE IN THE DAY oil 6x6 on canvas board is available on my website for $110. With the purchase of the painting, you will receive a small black wrought iron easel. So, framing is optional. To purchase the painting, click here.

This was painted from a photo from Oregon and my imagination. The photo like the last post was mostly in green. I played around with this one a lot until I figured out what I wanted. It didn't go very easily, but I'm pleased with the final results.

Today I've prepared some linen and canvases. I'm going to paint the last small study into a larger piece. I drew it onto the canvas, a little different format. The size is 14x18. I also drew and 11x14 onto the linen today. It is for a series of 5 that I'm painting (2 more to go). So, tomorrow is mapped out for me.

I'll be trying the ustream again, putting together a whole show. If it is successful, I'll let you know and you can view the show of me painting in the studio.

I also had my drawing for July for those that signed up for my newsletter. And....the winner is.....Gary Keimig, a Wyoming artist and coincidentally a good friend of friends of mine, Tammy and Tom Lucas. I've known them for several years from doing the Celebration of Fine Art together. Check out Gary's blog, http://gkeimigart.blogspot.com/.

I'll post again tomorrow. See ya.

Mountains, Road and fall trees oil by BECKY JOY

AFTERNOON ROAD, a 6x6 oil on canvas and board, varnished and ready to frame or display on the black wrought iron easel that I will send to you with the painting. Click here to buy this painting.

The photo of this painting is from a trip to Colorado. One of the photos taken while you are driving. I posted the original photo that I used to give you an idea of what I worked from. The composition is pretty much like the photo, but the color and lighting is entirely different. I often change the lighting or mood from what I actually see. You can see that I did simplify things from the photo.

Today I finished a larger painting from one of my studies. Although, looking at it in the last 5 minutes I see a little more work in the sky. I also played with ustream today. I recorded and deleted and recorded and deleted. I think I got the idea. Now I need to figure out the chat stuff so that I can talk to the audience when they ask me questions. One thing I was worried about was my voice being loud enough. I'm soft-spoken, but it did come in loud and clear. Yay!! Anyway, I should be broadcasting anytime now.

Talk to you all tomorrow.

Bountiful Bulbs oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Bountiful Bulbs” 2010 Niki Gulley
18” x 48” oil on canvas

Sometimes I like to paint places that I dream about and hope to one day experience, as is the case in “Bountiful Bulbs.” The tulip farms that I’ve seen in photos look so magnificent with their perfect vibrant rows of color combined with hearing my friends’ descriptions of seeing the overwhelming explosion of blooms both inspire me to paint a strawberry-and-lemon-lollipop-dipped world where all of your cares melt away.

With the purchase of this painting, you will receive a small black wrought iron display easel. The painting is finished on the edges of the board and varnished. With the easel you have the choice of framing it or displaying it on the easel.

I used both the palette knife and the brush on this painting. You can see more texture as you move into the foreground. This gives the painting more space and depth which I think is especially important in a scene like this with the distant trees and mountains.

Even though it is Sunday, I got a lot of painting done today. I started the day with a good game of bowling and a good day of painting. It was one of those days that things were coming together. Last week I felt pretty inept at painting. Oh well, sometimes it isn't easy.

I should have a productive day of painting tomorrow. No plans other than painting. :)!!!!

"Poppy Sweet" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Finally I'm back to blogging.  I lost a dear, dear friend to cancer last weekend and had no impetus to do much of anything but mourn and grieve the loss of such a sweet lady and talented artist.  So....I'm back, I guess.

Here are three red poppies palette knived onto a 10"x8" panel.  Should you be interested in this painting framed as shown, it'll cost $275.  Unframed it'll cost $175.  I went really heavy on the paint in this artwork.  And I'll admit, I had fun painting it, too!

Write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for close up of painting and frame, should you like.  Paypal only, I'll invoice you, s&h to be determined at time of sale.

Thanks for looking!

Angel Painting, Palette Knife Angel with Kitty by Judy Mackey

"Angel with Kitty"
6 x 4 inches, Oil on Board
Available
This is a small painting in my angel series. I've done several angels with dogs and was asked to paint some with cats. I tend not to paint in faces but I had a request to paint a face in one of my figurative paintings so as "practice" I painted an "essence" of a face in this one. No real features, I wanted to leave that to the viewers' imagination.
