"Happy" by Karla Nolan, framed watercolor painting

"Happy" is a small framed in gold, matted in off-white, watercolor painting of just that, a very happy red poppy.  One of my favorite subjects to paint, I have seen a few red oriental poppies blooming around town.  It has been so rainy, so wet, so soggy here, I'm amazed that they've dared to open, sans sun!

Should you be interested in purchasing this 7"x5" (mat/framed size) work for $95, please call Meg at 970-484-7862 or visit EsScentuals when you are in town at 142 South College, in the heart of downtown Fort Collins, Colorado.  Tell her Karla sent you!

"Aurora Borealis Over the Mountains" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

A disclaimer here, this is not the real aurora borealis, it's my imagination!  I had fun with this one, mixing colors in and out, deepening the silhouette of the mountain range with trees in view.  A little bit of artistic license, possibly, but a whole lot of fun to paint!

"Sparkly Western Sunset" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

I painted this sunset a while back with my handy palette knives and couldn't decide on a name for it.  Looking at it in different lighting situations, I kept notice how sparkly it was, a high gloss varnish added to the colors greatly.  Thus the name was born:  "Sparkly Western Sunset" -- because that is what it is, full of life and color!  A sweet miniature...

"Rocky Mountain Dusk" by Karla Nolan unframed palette knife oil painting

This is a larger painting, 16"x20" unframed.  It is the quintessential Rocky Mountain scene, so typically Colorado.  If you want to get an idea of what it is like to live near the mountains, just look at this painting, I think you'll get the hang of it!  It really can be dramatic as the last rays of the sun appear over the forthcoming mountain silhouette.

"Daybreak!", by Karla Nolan, 18"x24" unframed palette knife oil painting

I love painting the skies.  I don't like early morning, however, and have missed many a pretty dawn here in Colorado.  Silhouettes of bushes and trees have always intrigued me.  So I thought I'd bite the bullet and put together an early morning scene.  Maybe I'll reconsider and start rising earlier.  (I doubt it!)

"I Want to Live Here!" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Colorado is my favorite state in this country.  Not only was I born here but I plan to die here.  Fort Collins, here in the northern part of the state, is my "little slice of paradise".  Life here is good.  We have the plains, the high prairie, the mountains, the rugged and rocky terrain of the western part of the state, also.  I feel very fortunate.  The paintings says it all.

"Pink Water Lily", original watercolor painting by Karla Nolan

We live in what I call "a little slice of Paradise", Fort Collins, Colorado.  This sweet town has all sorts of horticultural delights including a huge test garden, Colorado State University Horticultural Department, multitudes of greenhouses and gardens.  But one of my favorite spots to visit is The Gardens on Spring Creek, less than two miles from our house.  This past summer I did a solo tour through the Gardens and found this sweet pink water lily, just floating along.  Here it is for you to ponder.  I enjoyed painting it and learned a few lessons about watercolor painting as the painting progressed.  It is one tough medium!

"Echinacea Quintet, Cheyenne Spirit", 7"x8" original watercolor painting by Karla Nolan

The end of summer/beginning of fall is an adventure in the flower garden.  I saw this Cheyenne Spirit echinacea at nearby Gardens On Spring Creek, an horticultural paradise in the center of Fort Collins, Colorado (which is the home of Colorado State University, known for the horticultural program at the college).  Every time I visit the Gardens I am inspired to paint and plant more.  We have many sorts of flowers in our own garden but it's hard to believe that so many other varieties would also grow for us.  It's change from sunny to shady in the back yard, the growth of the trees and bushes has been rampant but I have the great fortune of being able to walk through Spring Creek and learn even more about the floral kingdom.  So lucky!

"Looking From Estes Park Towards Rocky Mountains National Park" by Karla Nolan

Colorado is a state with many altitudes -- the eastern plains runs long and flat, high prairie, gradually climbing to the Mile High City and environs.  Denver is almost exactly a mile above sea level and one can tell this with the thinner air both in breathing in the oxygen and sunning -- you'll have a harder time with the breathing aspect and you'll burn to a crisp much more quickly!  We live right next to the foothills in Fort Collins, just over an hour north of Denver.  Driving up the Big Thompson Canyon to Estes Park, you'll see the fields, meadows and foliage before the great mountain peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park.  This is my (oil painting) take on it.  And there's a lot more to Colorado than just mountains.  More on that later.

"Majestic" by Karla Nolan

Having the Rocky Mountains to the west of us makes for some amazing sunsets, especially with the silhouette of the peaks below.  I love the dusks that have just a tinge of blue in them, more pinks, corals, yellows than anything.  I would have to say that they are "majestic"!

"Searing" by Karla Nolan

Luckily it hasn't gotten this hot so far this summer -- but you know the kind of day I'm talking about, don't you?  The "you can fry the egg on the sidewalk" sort of day, searing, mind boggling heat.  Not a cloud in the sky.  The living isn't necessarily so easy when you're sweating your way through the day!  Well, for the first time in the 27 years  that we've lived in our sweet Fort Collins, we have air conditioning in our house and, while I'm not in any hurry to use it, it is comforting (no pun intended) to know we have access to cooler temperatures.
