This barn is different for me because it is in good shape and still standing. I usually go for the derelict buildings. I liked this one because it was sitting up on a hill and looked even bigger than it was. All the different colors of red were interesting and of course, the green moss than contrasted with the red. This was in Oregon which explains the moss on the roof. All that moss, it won't be long before this barn will be a derelict building.

Facing the sun - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

How about some yellow for a change? Any other color than red actually? After doing so many paintings with red and exhausting a few tubes of paint, I finally decided to pick up another color. Let me know what you think.

Today's daily painting is 6x6 In Line, a farm scene. I have this painting for sale on my website for $100. To purchase click here.

I composed the scene with everything overlapping, going back into space. Again, I used the palette knife and brush. With the brush I am able to get the soft edges as in the background. The hard edges of the palette knife bring the foreground forward. The colors are a little more intense around the barn and the two overlapping roofs bring your attention to the buildings.

On my morning walks with my neighbors, we pass by this big display of sunflowers. Right about quarter of eight when we pass by, the side of the house is lit and the front is in shade. It's such a wonderful contrast, and it catches our breath every time....that is on days when we stop talking long enough to look! It is rather funny, there's 3, sometimes 4 of us, (and all gardeners & flower lovers) so when there's some new unusual bloom, conversation stops...oohs & ahhs abound. It's a great way to start the day, a walk with friends, to take in all the sights of the season.

These skies are those that I saw in Montana last summer -- we had such a wonderful time in that amazing state! The skies are "big sky" -- lots and lots of air space there. The dusks were delightful, all different kinds, all sort of cloud formations. This particular evening had the dark clouds coming in just over the lightness that was reminiscent to me of butternut squash. What a view to look at from our little rented abode. Delightful memories of Montana.

In the middle of nowhere along a rural road I discovered this all-in-one store. Apparently they carry everything you could want while passing by. The sign simply says, “IF WE AIN’T GOT IT YOU DON’T NEED IT.” I couldn’t pass without stopping.

I feel there’s always time for a short break and a pick-me-up. And of course there’s always time for a small painting while I’m stopped. Hope you like this one. I did the whole thing with my palette knife and portable pochade box. It’s a great tool for capturing little vignettes like this quickly and efficiently.

In the next couple of days I’ll be featuring more of these small palette knife paintings done while on the road. This little jewel is painted on a prepared masonite panel ready to frame or display on a shelf easel.

This 8x6 painting was painted on location in Sedona. I changed the colors of the shutters and darkened the building so that the tree would stand out. There were more objects in the store front on the balcony, cut I simplified them. I used the palette knife on the pots, tablecloth, plants and part of the tree. Of course the lines in the railing are always easier to paint with the palette knife.

Sunset hillside oil painting by BECKY JOY

This is a 5x7 oil on canvas. I painted it from a photo showing the tall trees. I changed the time of day, colors and the composition. It was really just the shape of the tall trees that I wanted from the photo. I used the palette knife on the tops of the bushes and the grass to move them forward in space. Geranium Climbers is a palette knife painting with very thick texture. It always surprises me a bit when I pick up a palette knife canvas from my stacks in the studio. The paint is heavy! The thing I love most about palette knife painting is it forces you to loosen up your style a bit. Years of painting with the knife also taught me to paint faster, sculpting quickly and "under" mixing the colors on the palette in order to get more interesting colors on the canvas. I use the knife minimally now, usually in the final bits of highlights on my paintings. There are some signature OPA members who use the knife almost regularly at this stage of their work, you might be surprised to learn who they are!

Still on the armchair travels to Ireland this week! A little elbow room is the expanse of space I feel standing on Valentia Island looking over to Portmagee. Wild skies, and wilder cliffs, long expanses of green, and this view during the late sunsets of summer is so wonderful, a continual color-show until the sun finally sets (realllllly late by the way!). I also took a 'tongue in cheek' elbow room with stepping up to a much bigger palette knife- a trowel actually, and used it in a more painterly fashion - painting with the 'whole arm' rather than just the wrist. What freedom- a more expressive paint handling (reminding me of how Dan McCaw moves paint with a big brush).

Will try to re-photograph this one tomorrow, I find the larger ones difficult to get accurate color.

Light of Morning on River by BECKY JOY

This is from a photo taken in Utah a few years ago. It was morning and the sun was coming over the mountains hitting the river here and there. I love that kind of striking light. I used the palette knife on the light in the painting which gives more attention to that area. The palette knife also works great on the light ripples in the water. I loved the various blues and violets in this scene. By keeping everything in that palette it makes the yellows, oranges and greens of the light stand out. 

It was a great day in the studio although a little short. I'm taking some time off to relax and go to the movies. I have to make sure and get out of the house here and there, because it is easy for me to spend all my time in the house and studio. Now that I moved and have my things all set up, I'm trying to get back into old routines which includes the treadmill. Sitting down at the computer and easel I don't get a lot of exercise. My routine used to always be the treadmill in the morning and then out of the house and studio at lunchtime for a bike ride or walk, just something to get out and see the world. Yesterday I started on the treadmill. Today I stepped it up and already feel the effects, which obviously means that I need it.

As I’ve mentioned, my usual style of painting is done with brushes. (Like the painting you’ll see on my personal Daily Painter's blog tomorrow: http://tombrownfineart.blogspot.com/ ). But occasionally I like to paint with a palette knife. Alternating between the two styles of painting keeps me fresh in each style.

This one was done at the edge of a farm. It was a cool day with a fresh breeze. Nobody was working the fields at the time, and I had a morning of absolute peace and serenity while I painted.

I feel a sense of relaxation every time I look at this painting. I hope it gives you the same wonderful feelings.
