Serenity Lane Cottage - Delphiniums by Nancy Medina

Serenity Lane Cottage is a new oil painting based on the cottages of Coronado Island, California. I took the liberty of borrowing some of my favorite delphinium photos from the Dallas Arboretum to populate the foreground of Serenity Lane. The delphiniums on Coronado Island are lovely, but were all a solid purple color this past spring. I had a bit easier time with the Dallas delphs, which were askew, multicolored, and interspersed with a wonderful variety of shapes and sizes. Take a peek at my blog to see photos of delphiniums from both locations and see if you an tell which is which!

A Single Ginkgo Leaf - Judy Mackey
"A Single Ginkgo Leaf"
5 x 5 inches, Oil on Board
There is a Ginkgo tree in Technology Park, Norcross, GA which should be turning yellow and shedding it's leaves soon. This little leaf was inspired by my friend and Georgia Artist, Hellenne Vermillion who does wonderful paintings of Ginkgo leaves and painted studying that tree leaf.

Once In a Blue Moon by Kay Wyne
16" x 20" Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Oil Painting
Once in a Blue Moon ... a phrase that we have all heard. This was a topic of conversation in the Wyne house lately....it is a common way of saying not very often, but what exactly is a Blue Moon? It is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month. That occurred last December, when we had a Full Moon on the 2nd and the 31st. According to the experts, there will be 41 months that have two Full Moons in every century, so you could say that once in a Blue Moon actually means once every two-and-a-half years.
Once in a Blue Moon is also a title for lyrics to songs....like the Van Morrison song....
Once in a blue moon
Something good comes along
Once in a blue moon
Everything's not going wrong
When you get weary
Beating on the same old gong
Once in a blue moon
Someone like you comes along

Turning Into Autumn
8"x10" oil on Belgian linen mounted on archival board
"Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves,
We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!
- Humbert Wolfe
Today I took the time to go over to Harkness Park and paint outdoors - on our first sunny day this week. The trees are turning, the wind was up a bit, but the air was so clear- you could see forever across the Long Island Sound. But I painted at the cove, the tidal flow making ripples across the water. The grasses are beginning to turn gold, and the trees have their yellows and reds, too! What a beautiful morning! I'm calling this 8"x10" painting "Turning Into Autumn".
Boston Opera House by palette knife painter Ann Gorbett

Opera House, Boston
Oil with a palette knife on cradled artist board
12" x 12" x .75"
We had a discussion in painting class about that triangle roof-I struggled with it's perspective in order to make it believable. What's interesting is that I was googling images of the Opera House this morning and found some earlier photos where this buidling had a different roof. Later photos showed scaffolding around this building so that must have been a recent update. Kind of strange that they added such a modern roof to an otherwise historic looking building. Do you think they were trying to make it blend it better with the brandy new building that popped up behind it?

is an award winning artist who paints exclusively with a palette knife. She holds a fine art degree and has worked as a professional graphic designer for many years. She began painting in oil again after taking a palette knife workshop through the Copley Society of Art in Boston and was immediately hooked. The thick, painterly, yet highly detailed strokes of color are trademarks of her style.

"Odd Sky" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on linen
Every once in a while, I look up into the heavens above and see what I believe to be an odd sky. Something just seems different -- yellow pervades most of the horizon, it's just before dusk. This is what I enjoy about nature -- you never can predict what's next!
I, like everyone else, have been hit hard by the economic times and have been considering the following decision for a while now. Since almost no galleries who represent me carry my oil paintings, I have determined that I will discount the cost of my oil paintings carried by Daily Painters and other such art blogs -- the list below indicates sizes and costs which I will institute, starting with this painting. Any paintings 11"x14" and under in size will be shipped without additional shipping and handling charges in North America; over 11"x14" will have an added fee, determined at the time of sale. I hope this helps you collect worthy art as I don't feel it is fair to not provide reasonable costs and stop artists and collectors from connecting with one another, even during trying financial times. As always, Paypal is preferred and I can send an invoice.
4"x6" painting -- $36.00
5"x7" painting --$52.50
8"x10" painting -- $100.00
9"x12" painting -- $135.00
11"x14" painting -- $175.00
s&h applied in addition to costs for below sizes
12"x16" painting -- $215.00
14"x18" painting -- $285.00
16"x20" painting -- $360.00
Larger painting prices to be determined! Please note, all of these artworks
are sold UNFRAMED.
I hope you appreciate my new oil painting policy. Please let me know if you have comments or questions at KarlaNolan@gmail.com. This also applies to the paintings that are not yet sold found on my website (listed below). Thanks for looking!

"Fragmented II" Abstract Acrylic Mixed Media by Natasa Vretenar
When I decided to devote my time seriously to art I went through a stage when I had to try as many mediums as possible. Therefore - I bought soft pastels, oil pastels, oils, acrylics, canvases, solid supports. I slowly figured out what works and what does not work for me. I love working with oils - but decided against them because of having small kids in the house and not having a separate studio. I finally settled on acrylics - they dried fast and the abundance of acrylic mediums, gels, pastes and paints made it easy for me. If you have not noticed yet - I do love texture :) I am learning new techniques every day, trying to add mixed materials to my paintings, testing different glues and supports for my art. It is so much fun!

Plein air antique truck oil by BECKY JOY
This is an 8x10 plein air that is available on my website, www.beckyjoy.com
The day that I painted this one, I had a poet "shadow" me for the day. I started at another location painting a barn and out buildings, but it was way too hot. So, I moved on to another location closer to the coast. The main object was just to find a shady place to paint. I pulled into a parking lot and found this old truck across the lot. I thought the red would show well against all the greens.
The poet that followed me and wrote about me painting this truck is Jane Elsdon of Atascadero, CA.
The following is the poem that she wrote.
FAREWELL TO THE JONESES
No keeping up with the Joneses here
Artist that she is -
The moment that she saw it -
Rusty old red Dodge
Flatbed truck, vintage 30's or 40's
Disintegrating before
A backdrop of green
Beside a billboard boasting
Town of HARMONY
Population 18 -
It was instant love
For this artist
No hot August nights
Where folks from wide and far
Parade their seductive vintage
Automobiles through town
Ashine with radical restoration
Like a fading actress displaying
Her latest tuck and nip
On the red carpet.
It was simply
Romance of the brush
Seduction of the subject
Captured on canvas
By a brush whose bristles
Reveal the light.

Plein air morning glory by BECKY JOY
This 8x10 plein air from the SLO festival is on my website for sale
It is framed in black. www.beckyjoy.com
A friend from San Luis Obispo took me to an apple orchard to paint on Thursday morning. This was the first thing that I saw with some shadow. It felt like the little shed was being overwhelmed with the morning glories. The old sign in the back just gave it a great added touch. I had so much fun painting this.

"Morning Stroll" by Kristin Jurist Haakenson
Morning Stroll
acrylic on canvas
12" x 12" x 1.5"
In preparation for an upcoming show at Jubilee Biodynamic Farm in Carnation, WA, I've been trying my hand at painting farm animals. I thought I'd start with this little family of chickens.
I have a soft spot in my heart for chickens. We keep 4 hens in our backyard, and besides the delicious fresh eggs they provide, they also make surprisingly great pets. We've handled them since they were chicks, so they're incredibly tame and like to follow us around the yard when we let them out of their enclosure. David & I have even recently started a blog about our chickens, since we've been getting a surprising number of emails with questions about raising an urban flock.
Anyway, more farm animals - as well as a lot of new bison paintings - will be up shortly.

Another juicy little gem done just for fun. (Check the texture and colors in the detail shot.)
This was painted at the edge of Balboa Island late in the day. I used my custom-designed pochade box and a palette knife. That’s all I needed.
Setup was instantaneous. I just popped open my pochade box and went to work. No solvents or mediums to spill, and no brushes to clean when I’m done.
Afterwards I merely wiped the palette knife on a tissue and closed the paintbox with the painting safely stored inside. I was completely packed and ready to go.
That kind of gear makes it very inviting to pause for a few moments to capture something like this in a painting. I’ll bet it makes you want to get out your OWN paints and give it a try, doesn’t it?

Thinking Out Loud - Cat on a Cup
4"x4" oil on canvas mounted on board
"As every cat owner knows, nobody owns a cat."
- Ellen Perry Berkeley
Today's little painting, a 4"x4" sketch, which I'm calling, "Thinking Out Loud" is actually like 'thinking out loud' in paint - sort of the next step beyond ink & paper sketchbooks for me. It's a small section of a larger commission and I'm trying a combination of brushwork & palette knife to see how I like it before I proceed on with the larger painting.
Yesterday, after I painted this on Monday, we lost power for several hours during a howling wind storm! Luckily I had cleaned up my paint brushes already. And luckily I had not started chopping up anything to cook yet for dinner (just had it all set out). So back it went, it's on the menu for dinner tonight!
But even with the stormy afternoon/evening, I got lots done in the morning, a load of paintings varnished, a new shipment of frames in to get ready for an up-coming show....and a delightful studio visit this morning (Tuesday, as I write this), thanks Jane & Wendy!
Welcome to my latest new subscribers! I do hope you enjoy the paintings, photos & stories! I always love hearing comments from my readers!!

california plein air show and workshop by BECKY JOY
This is an 8x10 plein air oil. I woke up after dawn, looked out my window and saw this view. The hills were just ablaze with wonderful rich colors. I hurried up, showered, got dressed and went painting.
I awoke almost every morning this past week at dawn and was out there painting when the sun was coming over the mountains, but this morning I was winding down and slept in a little later. Because of that I saw a different view, the hills were already lit with the morning sun. I have posted this painting on my website along with other plein air paintings from the week. http://www.beckyjoy.com/Below is a photo of my paint set up with the view of the quickdraw behind it. The finished painting in the quickdraw was auctioned off afterward. I originally started painting the big blue work trucks with the orange ladders. They had the cones out, so I thought they would be there for a while. Not so, I had to wipe them out, because I didn't have enough information. It was panic for a little while when I had to refocus and have a new focal point, but I think I recovered reasonably well. I noticed that my drawing was a little off after wiping off. I have too much of a slant from left down to the right. I guess that is one of the things I need to watch more next time.
I'll be leaving for home tomorrow morning, rest and wash clothes for a couple days, then I head up to northern AZ to pinetop to paint the aspens. That should be a nice change of pace with the fall colors on the aspens. So, I'll have to sort through all of this. Then I'll be posting some fall pictures later this week. Talk to you all later.
I still have space in my 3 day plein air workshops Oct 21,22 & 23 in Phoenix. Email me if you are interested. beckyjoy@beckyjoy.com

On my easel...Aspens in Color
This is one of the projects I have been working on this week...a dyptych in oils. Each heavy-duty canvas is 48" x 30", so overall size is 48" x 60"...I have gone through numerous tubes of paint on this painting already. I have more color and depth to put in, and then the aspens need more paint. Actually, this is not my easel...I am using Sharon's easel because it large enough to hold two canvas' side by side. Tomorrow I will post the painting sitting on my easel. I went to the studio everyday this week to paint, and then today painted en plein aire....outside. It was a beautiful, sunny and warm October afternoon, and was fun painting with an old friend and a new friend. The location of the paint-out was great. I hope to go back tomorrow!!! Thanks for viewing this blog, and looking at my art. Have a great weekend!Summer Breeze by Roxanne Steed
6"x36" oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, 1 1/2" deep, edges painted with design continued from front
"Live each season as it passes."
- Henry David Thoreau
Today's painting "Summer Breeze" is a different format than I've worked on before, a very long, 6"x36" oil on gallery-wrapped canvas that is 1 1/2 inches deep. The sides are painted with the design carrying around the edges, so there is no need to frame if you choose that contemporary look. I love being able to live close to water, everything about it- to hear the wind blow across, smell the salt air, and try and see as far as I can - especially in the varying weather. One of my favorite places to just 'be'.

Hi everyone!
What a great week painting. It has been a very productive week painting like a mad woman. Overall, I'm very pleased with the results. I finished 16 paintings from 8x10 to 11x14. This is just a part of them. I'll have to take more photos when I get home.
I was really in the "zone". I even forgot to eat one day (not good) and that certainly doesn't happen often to me. Anyway, today was the day that we turned in 6 of our paintings for the show. Now its relax until tonight for the opening.
Tomorrow morning is the quick draw. Always an exciting event. Its really a rush (literally and figuratively) during the two hours. After the paintings are done they are auctioned off. I'm hoping to get some small paintings done on Sat afternoon and Sunday. Both days have a lot of waiting around until the show is taken down on Sun at 4. Then I'll be heading home.
I'll post some more later and hopefully some photos of the event.

"Art and music are to my soul, as food and water are to my body. I believe that they are two of God's most precious gifts to His children. As the author and giver of creativity, through these gifts, He has given us a portion of Himself. He created the very first canvas, magnificently painted it, and brought it to life" I am a full time artist, dividing my time between painting and teaching in my Colorado studio. Having painted on most every surface imaginable, at this time I work primarily on canvas, board, and paper. Though my style remains quite diverse, I believe I have the heart of an Abstract Expressionist, or even more accurately, an Action Expressionist, as I am most definitely an "action painter". Each painting is a journey , dictated by primarily by my current thoughts and emotions, be they happy, sad, peaceful or frenzied. It is a mysterious relationship, and is thrilling when the painting finally reveals itself, and our private journey becomes a story to share.
