This painting is all about the sky, then the aspens leading down to the path. Usually, it's the other way around in my paintings. The path takes the viewer where I want their eye to lead. I love this quote from Helen Keller. Think about it, she couldn't see the sky. However, she could smell the fresh air while feeling the wind on her skin (not listening to it).

New Summer Aspen Tree Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

On our Santa Fe Art Trek last year, the temperature started rising in the afternoon, so we headed up into the mountains for cooler breezes to paint the beautiful aspen trees. We were attracted to the brilliant white trunks with their unique peeling bark and dark protruding knots. I liked how the soft dappled light came through the trees and illuminated the path, leading into the distance. Becoming totally lost in the moment, I set out to capture the peacefulness and contentment of being immersed in nature.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

I love the texture and sculptural quality of these trees and think they make great subjects for my style. My favorite golden yellows were all used in this large painting and as I let it dry imbetween coats of paint, it is extremely thick and has lots of beautiful broken color and texture. A favorite for sure!

Estes Park Colorado Landscape Painting
Last year, Tom and I went to Estes Park, Colorado. It is one of our treasured National Parks that I hope to return to one day. If you ever get a chance to visit, be sure you spend a day up at Bear Lake! Tom and I went at least two or three times. We came away with some incredible photos for me to use for subject matter to paint. This 11"x14" acrylic painting, "Autumn Inspiration" is inspired by one of my walks up at Bear Lake. The aspens were just beginning to change. The brilliant hues of the quaking leaves, against the azure sky, captured my spirit. I suppose that's why we went back two days later to do some more photo shoots and take in the extraordinary beauty of this magical wonderland.

On my easel...Aspens in Color
This is one of the projects I have been working on this week...a dyptych in oils. Each heavy-duty canvas is 48" x 30", so overall size is 48" x 60"...I have gone through numerous tubes of paint on this painting already. I have more color and depth to put in, and then the aspens need more paint. Actually, this is not my easel...I am using Sharon's easel because it large enough to hold two canvas' side by side. Tomorrow I will post the painting sitting on my easel. I went to the studio everyday this week to paint, and then today painted en plein aire....outside. It was a beautiful, sunny and warm October afternoon, and was fun painting with an old friend and a new friend. The location of the paint-out was great. I hope to go back tomorrow!!! I created these aspen trees with palette knife and extremely thick oil paint to achieve texture and dimension. I love how the bright colors pop and brighten up any room, and how the strokes contain so much movement and energy. The image is painted around the sides of the 1.5 inch deep gallery wrap canvas so that it looks three-dimensional and can be hung as is without a frame for a contemporary look. These chunky aspen paintings look great in pairs or threes.
