Garden Gate Dallas Arboretum Tulip Path by Nancy Medina

Garden Gate Tulip Path
by Nancy Medina
 16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Garden Gate Tulip Path is the newest daily painting, as I count down the opening of the tulips at the Dallas Arboretum in the next few weeks. My deep purple irises have opened in my garden this week. They are probably wondering what season this is, considering we had 35 degree weather one day, and 80 degree weather the next! I'm planning a photo excursion to the Arboretum during Dallas Blooms very soon - and packing for my March 23 flower painting workshop there. Stay tuned to my art blog, I'll be sharing my favorite photos with you!

Ahh, can you tell, I'm dreaming of spring? And tomorrow we have another snow storm on its way in here. Fickle weather! I was out walking this morning, and it definitely felt like spring. I was sure that snow was over for good. Oh well, I've been mixing in some older brush and layering techniques along with some of the things I've learned over the last several years working with just a palette knife. I think it's good to continually tweak what we do as artists.
I used to collect and trade iris with friends and neighbors each time we would move (which was about every three years with the Navy). During one Navy move we finally had to leave them where they grew. But during that time while I was trading & growing, it was always fun to trade for a new color, and my iris garden began to look a bit like this! Now I haven't grown iris in many years, and I find I do miss them. Perhaps it's something I might find a spot for in this garden I'm tending now!

Carmel Cupcake 13038, Dreama Tolle Perry Workshop, Day 3, Carmel, Indiana by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Carmel Cupcake 13038
8x8 in. Ampersand Gessobord panel

OK.. this post has a spoiler alert and if you ever want to take a Dreama Tolle Perry workshop don't read any longer. Well, OK here goes. This was painted in a really fun exercise on day 3 called musical easels. I had no idea I would end up with such a good painting. Here's how it worked - Dreama didn't demo today and we were given about 4 or 5 images, each student received one, and if your image had a U on it you had to paint it upside down. Whew.. I got the cupcake image above right side up. Directions were to go back to your own easel and when the GO was given draw off your design and begin painting until the MOVE call was given which was about 3 or 4 minutes in a directed rotation. Not all 19 people in the class painted on this but probably 5 or 6 did. I enjoyed moving to different easels and seeing the setups and was very pleased with my cupcake when the call was given to return to your home easel. This week I did have to put in some hot licks on it with the palette knife because the icing got smeared on the flight home. I see more oil cupcakes in my future AND more Dreama workshops.
I've been doing cupcake collages for some time and here is one that sold March 5, 2013 that is headed to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Does that make me an internationally collected artist now?

Big Night, 8x8 in. torn paper collage

A question has come up about how I carry wet oil paintings on a flight and here is the answer. Raymar wet panel carriers can be found HERE. A wonderful invention they are.

Yellow Bucket of Flowers(sold!) & Don't Worry, Be Happy Flops by Roxanne Steed

Yay, it feels great to be back in the studio PAINTING! It's been a busy winter, who woulda thunk it?

I recently got back from a short trip to Hawaii! Now, before you get all excited, it....was...very....short! In fact, I spent as much time in airplanes and airports as I did on the ground there. But it was productive three days, none-the-less.  I took a sketchbook....and a swim-suit....and that's about it! Oh yeah, some flip-flops (umm, they are called 'rubber sandals' over there in Oahu) don't make the mistake to call them the wrong thing!

You definitely need a pair like this! Yes, even in a freezing winter (like I'm having here in CT). I can just slip these babies on and feel like summer is really going to get here! (hey, it worked for Dorothy, even if those were ruby slippers, not rubber slippers).
and yes, those things really do make GREAT prints in the sand! (or wet tracks on sidewalks!) Woohoo!  Where did I get those? Subscribe to my Cheer Factor newsletter, and I'll tell you all in the next issue!
ALSO***** "a save the date notice" for Saturday, June 1st- this summer. I'll be releasing some very exciting news....think gardens, blooms, summer fragrances...sigh! More about that in my upcoming news- letter, too!

Well my Houston Gallery 'closed' and my few leftover paintings arrived back at the house.  This is one of them but darn if I can find the orignal files with pictures to call it by the correct name. I was painted in January of 2012 I am almost certain but the file is not there. I renamed it Found Love..

This 24 x 30 inch painting needs a home. We are moving in March... a few weeks from now and I would rather pack this to send to you.

"Placitas" 16"X20" by Natasa Vretenar

Abstract View of Woods, study, by Roxanne Steed

6"x8" oil on linen mounted on archival board
Sometimes, I do studies, just from things I've seen...places I've been to many times, like this spot in the woods where I've hiked many times. This one, I wanted to keep the shapes quite simple and strong, rather abstract, and leave all detail to the 'part between your eyes and brain' that tells you exactly what that is! Quite a fun exercise in paint!

The French House 13037, Dreama Tolle Perry Workshop, Day 2, Carmel, IN by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

The French House 13037
Oil on Ampersand Gessobord
12x12 in.

I painted this along with 19 other students in a Dreama Tolle Perry Oil workshop in Carmel Indiana about a week ago on Saturday February 23 or it could be called Paris in Indiana and both are like foreign countries to me. See my previous post when I discussed more about this lovely town of Carmel. Here is Dreama's painting of Backyard France HERE.

There were a few little groans when this image was passed out ( I might have uttered a little one) as the tulips on Friday were so much fun to paint and I really don't do houses very often. If you are painting buildings what could be better than a French backyard along with it?  The colors were dazzling and to see Dreama's color palette see her website HERE. My flower pots began to look like cupcakes with a few strokes of the palette knife but that only prepared me for day 3 so stay tuned. To see other photos from the class go to my blog please

Some 20 of my images have been put on checks, side tear checks, check book covers and address labels in 5 sets of 4 rotating images, roosters, farm animals, flowers, high heels, and painted figures. To see the images go to http://new.checkadvantage.com/nancy-standlee-checks and click on an image and it will show the 4 images in the set.

Sunflowers in Teal is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. Each time I open a catalog I am seeing teal shoes, teal dresses, and teal wall colors! This seems to be the color of the season. It's such a cheerful color, it makes me wish I were young enough to wear strappy teal high heel sandals! My newest art newsletter came out today, and the winner of my February painting giveaway was announced. Read more...

Day 2 (Burano), Venice Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

"Wash and Dry," Burano ©2013 Niki Gulley
10" x 8" • textured oil painting

On the second day of our Venice Art Trek, we headed to the islands of Burano and Murano. Burano is known as a fishing community (and for the homemade lace that they make there), and to help the fisherman find their houses while coming back from sea, they painted their homes every color of the rainbow. With the picturesque canals and so many great colored buildings to choose from, it's hard to pick a single subject matter! We were drawn to this quiet location, however, and the vibrant red stucco wall with that morning's laundry being hung out to dry screamed to be painted. Today I chose to work with thick oil paint and palette knife to capture the rough surface of the walls, resulting in a final painting which is loaded with texture and color.

If you'd like to join us on one of our upcoming Art Treks, please let me know. The final registration deadline of March 1st for our Tuscany and Cinque Terre/Lake Como, Italy workshops is quickly approaching!

Or, closer to home I'll be leading a Plein Air Painting Workshop sponsored through the Good Art Company gallery in Fredericksburg, TX, April 5-7, during Texas wildflower season.
