This painting was a commission for a Christmas present. It is the home of Shirley, the mother of a friend of mine. It's from a picture taken last year during one of our infrequent snows. Shirley is one of my very favorite people. I call this her stomping ground because not only is this her home it also houses her business and she rules it all! A beautiful, plain-spoken, feisty, salt-of the-earth kind of woman. She laughs loud and talks loud. Hugs your neck the first time she meets you. She can do more and work harder than most women half her age. She is larger than life and knows how to live life large. A true gem of a girl! Merry Christmas, Shirley!

Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, I have always had a passion for art. From drawing what must have amounted to thousands of pictures of horses and dogs as a child to studying art in college, it has always been as natural as breathing to me. For the last ten years while my children were small, I ran a successful business painting murals and decorative pieces. Here and there, I would snatch a few moments to paint for myself. Now that my children are older, I have decided to return to my love of painting full time and have studied with artists Andy Braitman, Dreama Tolle Perry and Leslie Saeta. I currently live in Charlotte, North Carolina with my family and a wonderful menagerie of pets.

I paint a lot of bold fall foliage scenes from Colorado and farther north, but I wanted this aspen painting to have a more peaceful feel so I used much softer, more muted color palette to add to that mood.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating. Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again. It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

Varying Stages Of Undress; Pears by Roxanne Steed

I have always admired paintings of those 'fancy pears' that come wrapped in elegant paper- like the ones in those fruit gifts that come at Christmas! As luck would have it our mother in law sent us a gorgeous box of pears (& other goodies). I ate one already, but realized I have these beautiful subjects to paint....and quickly as they'll need to be eaten! Pears have such a beautiful sensual form...and these three in varying stages of un-wrap are well- very fascinating to me.

I was born in Essex, England in 1944 and emigrated to Canada in 1957, residing first in Toronto and moving to Calgary in 1960. Now residing in Kelowna, British Columbia. Early influences on my style and career included J M W Turner and John Constable. Later, the work of the late French minimalist Nicolas De Stael played the most significant role in my development as a painter. My landscape paintings are abstracted to simple forms relying on texture and tonal variations to create drama. My still-life and flower works are painted with a palette knife and sometimes brush in acrylic either on canvass or panels. I build the shapes of the abstracted flowers, not being at all concerned with the type of flower, by layering subtle changes in tone and colour value, creating my own style of still-life. Most of my landscapes are painted with a brush although occasionally a palette knife may be used for effect. My paintings hang in corporate and private collections across the world. I've had a number of solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the USA. I'm a member of Landscape Artists International and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.

Growing up, I heard this phrase "slight chop on inland waters" at the end of every weather forecast on the radio. I'm not sure I even knew what it meant for a very long time. Funny what you remember. When I was a small child and and heard another city's forecast on the radio, I was stunned when it didn't include that line. It never occurred to me that it only applied to the coast. This shrimpboat is heading out to sea with early morning fog and a slight chop on inland waters

Slide Rock Park in Oak Creek Canyon (north of Sedona, AZ) is one of my favorite places to paint. Much of the year it is overrun with tourists, but since I just live up the mountain about 20 miles, I can pick the best days to go, and be there in 30 minutes. This painting was done on a particularly beautiful fall day a couple of weeks ago. Golden autumn colors, rugged red rocks, a clear canyon creek, deep purple shadows on a warm November morning--what more could a painter ask for?

I'm Kathy Willis, an Arizona native residing in Flagstaff, a late-comer painter, blogger, and trailrunner. I've long been inspired by my southwest homeland, however it was a life-changing journey walking the 500 mile Camino de Santiago in Spain in celebration of my fiftieth birthday, that I discovered a desire to express myself through art. "Deep in the Woods" - Textured aspen painting by Niki Gulley

I am absolutely crazy about aspen trees. I love their textured peeling bark, the sound of their tinkling leaves blowing in the breeze, the way the light illuminates their yellow leaves and makes them glow, and the repetition of the trunks packed so tightly together. The first time I saw them was on a trip with my family to Colorado and I fell in love with the beautiful scenery and peacefulness I found immersed in the forest and surrounded by mountains. I wanted to share my love of nature in “Deep in the Woods” so that you, too, could enjoy that calm and the beauty of the aspens.

A little about me...I'm 35 years of age, At 16 I found out I had Cancer (nasal pharyngeal carcinoma). I was successfully treated at the University of Chicago hospitals. A few years later at age 24 I suffered a Brain Stem Hemorrhagic Stroke. Which ultimately left my right side(both leg and arm), the left side of my face and my voice paralyzed as well as nystagmus ( involuntary rhythmic shaking of the eyes). The nystagmus is the real culprit affecting my art more so then use of my left arm.

I was convinced by my family to give painting a shot, I didn't have much hope in seeing the end result. As I was right handed my entire life and could do nothing with my left hand.(to this day, I still can't write in a straight, even, uniform line) not to mention the hand tremors also left by the stroke..Well it turned out I did get use to painting with the opposite hand. It also turned out that I really enjoyed myself and have ultimately become passionate about painting.

Hi everyone,

I've been remiss on not posting any new small works. I've had a lot of business things to take care of, packing and shipping paintings, phone calls, show apps, etc, etc. This is a nocturne from my driveway looking down the street. I don't like going out by myself at night to paint unless I'm in a crowded well lit area, so the next best thing is to go stand at the end of my driveway. It works, but there isn't a lot of traffic or change of scenery, but it's good practice anyway.

Yesterday Christine Debrosky and I went out to find cotton fields and to do some plein air painting for our 5 c's project for the Arizona Centennial. It's harvest time right now in the cotton fields. I didn't come away with a finished painting yesterday that I really wanted to keep, but I did get a lot of reference material. My daughter's middle school cheerleading team had a fundraiser selling pansies this fall. I bought a bunch and spent one afternoon in October planting about half of them. But I'm a little embarrassed to say that I still haven't planted the rest...and it's already December! But, I put the unplanted ones to good use as props for this still life. Hopefully my yard will be full of blue and yellow pansies before Christmas.

While walking my dog this summer at the beach, I came upon this great scene. An old Ford Starliner from the early sixties (before you get really impressed, I had to google this!) sitting out in front of a beach house. It was mid morning and the sun was lighting the scene like a movie set. The old Ford had definitely seen better days but I got the feeling she still had some spark left in her!

I can't remember a time that I didn't have an artistic pursuit but I found my true love with painting. Although I enjoy exploring with different techniques and materials, I primarily work in oils with an abstract style. Thick paint placed with a palette knife and strong geometric shapes are often found in my paintings. After earning a degree in Business Admin/Marketing, I went on to several "Big Girl" corporate jobs and then owned and ran a design business in Hawaii, importing antiques from the mainland. My education was rounded out through the UC Berkeley Extension Art Program and the College of Marin Art and Design Program. I am fortunate to have had wonderful instructors as well as the insightful critiques of my fun, fellow painters.

Growing up in the midwest, I loved the first snowfall of the year when everything would get a beautiful dusting of pristine white powder, including even the tiniest of branches in the treetops above. If you caught that moment early enough in the morning before anything had disturbed the intricate frosted web, it was just magical. Then the sun would start rising and peeking through the limbs, and everything would sparkle like diamonds. In Climbing Trees, I wanted to capture that brief beautiful moment when the sunlight dances through the icing on the treetops and you can feel yourself looking up in wonderment just like you did when you were a kid.

This painting is a a complete detour from most of the aspen paintings that I do. The color palette is soft and muted. I stayed away from the bold and vibrant color palette that I normally paint with. I wanted the viewer to be drawn into the painting....Thanks for viewing. Quiet Times is hanging at the gallery in Santa Fe.
