I am so excited to announce that this painting has been selected to exhibit in Salon International 2012 hosted by Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio. The exhibit will run from April 14 - May 4 2012. I am honored to be a part of this exclusive exhibit and look forward to attending the opening reception on April 14th.

My daughter was modeling for me and I had initially wanted her to hold her Daddy's guitar for the composition I was trying to put together. The guitar was way to big for her to sit comfortably and so I let her take a rest while I took a little break.When I returned from my break, I found the perfect composition waiting for me!

Tea Time Study

I blogged about the study I did for Tea Time a couple of days ago, but thought I would include the photo of it again to show a side-by-side comparison. The study was supposed to have been a quick check of composition and color, but I really got caught up and put some time into it once I got started. I love the sepia, almost antique feel of the study, but decided to make the subjects cooler in color and the background and shadows warmer for the finished painting, which is more "true to life" color.  As you can tell the flowers were fading fast and getting smaller by the day, I even had to replace the one in the middle.  Usually a study turns out to be a very loose version of my finished piece, but in this case it almost seems like two completely different paintings.

Tea Time Study

My kids just finished their last finals Tuesday.  I guess their preparation is catching because this has been a week of studies for me, too.  I finished a study Monday for a figurative work I have been thinking about for a while, now.  Then I realized I had better work on some roses I have while they are still fresh.  The tea cups are my mother's wedding china and I added a few pears and some silver.  My intention was to do a quick study, just to check color and composition, but I was having fun painting this and got into some details.  I love how the colors work together to create an almost antique feeling.  Today, study time is over, finals commence!

This adorable little princess, full of confidence and poise is the niece of a friend.  With the sun filtering through her tiny gown and glittering like gold dust onto her hair to the gardens around, this scene was fun to paint. 

I find myself inspired by light in a subject.  To me, light changes a painting from ordinary to delightful.  Light shines more brightly in a painting with sufficient contrast.  I find that a good analogy for my life experiences, too.  Experiencing sad or painful times makes my happy times seem happier.
