New Year, New Beginnings by Pamela Blaies

18" x 24"
oil on linen

I used some new materials and tools on this one. This is my first painting ever on oil primed linen affixed to Gatorboard using brushes and the knife.  It is a little tricky using a knife on board.  Since I've always used the knife exclusively in my painting up until the past month or so, it still feels a bit awkward to work with a brush and I used the knife on the detail work of the face, hands, dress and highlights in the velvet. But I am enjoying the results of my experimentation with using brushes along with my palette knife.  New year is the perfect time for trying out new things.

Lilies from Long Ago by Pamela Blaies

14" x 11"
oil on canvas

As a reference for this painting, I used an image from 1901 of a little girl sitting in a garden filled with lilies. I just love vintage photos and their faded, sepia-toned black and white images. I'm fascinated by the life and times of the early 1900s and old photos give me a little peek back in time. I imagined the light softly illuminating all the beautiful colors of her white dress and the blooming white lilies.

A Little Ray of Sunshine by Pamela Blaies

oil on canvas
11" x 14"

I was immediately taken by the lighting and, of course, these precious girls in their fluffy, white dresses. My little cousin, Grace, is a ray of sunshine for her family. They have been going through an incredibly difficult time due to the sudden passing of her baby brother at just 5 months of age. My heart goes out to them. I know they love art, so I painted this as a special gift for them.

Spring Scramble by Pamela Blaies

20" x 24"
Oil on Canvas

This painting reminds me to breathe deeply and enjoy life. I definitely need to remember that at times like this.  I've been preparing for the art festivals and some exhibitions I have coming up this spring. Framing, packing, shipping and generally scurrying around in a frenzy. I finally got everything shipped and delivered to my next three upcoming exhibitions.

Breathe....

I invite you to visit the Dow Galleries in Fort Worth on Saturday, March 24th, for Spring Gallery Night. I have two new paintings hanging there and am exhibiting with some other wonderful artists.

This morning, I am headed off to Houston to participate in the Bayou City Memorial Park Art Festival 2012 this weekend. If you will be around the Houston area, don't miss this exciting festival - I'd love to see you!

Salon International 2012 by Pamela Blaies

18" x 24"
Oil on canvas

I am so excited to announce that this painting has been selected to exhibit in Salon International 2012 hosted by Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio. The exhibit will run from April 14 - May 4 2012. I am honored to be a part of this exclusive exhibit and look forward to attending the opening reception on April 14th.

My daughter was modeling for me and I had initially wanted her to hold her Daddy's guitar for the composition I was trying to put together. The guitar was way to big for her to sit comfortably and so I let her take a rest while I took a little break. When I returned from my break, I found the perfect composition waiting for me!
