All Dogs go to Heaven

Sometimes I do wake up in the middle of the night with a thought suddenly in my head. Inspriration from I don't know where, but since I can't paint at 2 a.m. I just go write it down.
(My husband is used to my pitter paddering around in the middle of the night now.)
In the morning, there it is, like a note from the heavens....paint this! Anyway here are my latest.
The dog one may have been inspired by my Maggie, pushing her way onto my pillow the other night but whatever it was, HERE THEY ARE!

"Black Swallowtail" Original Oil Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art
I painted this photo in January using watercolors here, and wanted to see if I could accomplish any of the same things with oils and my palette knives. Not sure I could. In the photo there is more variation in the green behind the butterfly and flower. I did some underpainting, and let it peek through a bit. When I try to get a few different greens going, no matter how close they are, it starts to look like sponge painting--that is not the look I'm into. Instead I kept the background thin and layered the paint more thickly in the flower and butterfly.

Wings: Painting #10 of 100 by Kay Wyne
Wings: Painting #10
100 Paintings in 100 Days, $100 each.
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
by Texas Artist Kay Wyne
Thick paint on this small panel gives the contemporary painting lots of texture. I blended the colors on the panel as I applied the paint with the palette knife. No brushes on this painting. I now have a new favorite knife....it is a number 24, and gives me crisp edges, and can get into small spaces on the canvas. Thanks for viewing this blog and the art posted here. Have a great day.

Wings: Painting #5 of 100 by Kay Wyne
Wings: Painting #5
100 Paintings in 100 Days, $100 each.
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
by Texas Artist Kay Wyne
This palette knife painting is #5 in this series.....pale robin's egg blue and raw umber are the primary colors in this painting, along with a creamy off-white. There is texture on the canvas as the paint was built up after layer and layer being applied. The soft blue is a good background for the umber tones in the butterfly. This creature evolved after several different drawings on the canvas board. Thanks for viewing....Look for Painting #6 tomorrow.
