Thanksgiving! I know it's not a turkey but close! 

 I hope you enjoy all the simple pleasures of the day, even amid the chaos: the scent of the turkey roasting in the oven, the autumn leaves swirling outside the window, or seagull cries in my case and the sounds of lively conversation and laughter.

I just pulled this colorful guy off the easel, and he is drying in the studio.  This rooster was so much fun to paint, with almost every color on my palette on the canvas...I kept the lines disjointed, loose, all with different size brushes.  I started with a dark background (my new thing) which makes the foreground pop.  Flamboyant Feathers is for sale....contact ME for more info on this guy.  Framing is optional...he looks good as is, and ready for a new home.  Thanks for looking, Kay  p.s.  there might be a little glare on the right side of this photo...I may need to retake.

I have been experimenting with dark backgrounds, and this rooster pops with such a dramatic contrast.  I named this rooster Sunshine because of all of the colors in his feathers and comb.  He reminds me of a colorful sunny day.  The sides of the canvas are also painted black, so a frame is not necessary.  Contact Kay for purchasing info...Sunshine is drying at the studio before he takes off.

This Red Rooster lives at Heritage Village in Downtown Dallas. Painting partner Sharon Hodges took a great photo of this rooster in a striking pose. This plump rooster has bold brush strokes, and fills the canvas with his black and white feathers. His golden beak, red comb and black and white feathers make this contemporary city rooster interesting. The background was applied with a palette knife, using naples yellow, white and yellow ochre. Day #24 in the 30/30 Paint Challenge

This Friday I will be doing a Palette Knife Demo with George as my model at Dutch Art Gallery.  George is is going to be my model!  He is a beautiful Rooster who lives at Gecko Hardware Store, located in our neighborhood, just a few doors down from the gallery.  In this photo George is critiquing one of my paintings.  I visited George yesterday, and took some pictures of him.

This contemporary rooster was a commission for a Dallas collector who asked me to paint a colorful rooster.  It was fun working with him, choosing the color palette, the canvas size, the subject matter...creating just the right image...it was a Christmas gift to his wife.  Mister Rooster has color, texture and personality!  I know that this rooster will love his new home.  Here are a few photos of the painting....as it went through different stages.

As you can see, I started with a drawing in charcoal, then started covering the canvas with paint.  Layers and layers of paint went on with a wide brush and then the palette knife.  The palette knife allows the paint to be applied with texture and gives the painting depth.  Feathers were added giving Mister Rooster volume and a full body.  Details in the eye were important.  Touches of color implying wildflowers were put in the grass.  Thanks for looking at this blog and the art posted.
