Shady Walk, Day 8 of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge by Marion Hedger

Shady Walk
Palette knife painting by Marion Hedger
30x40cm on  gallery wrapped canvas
See all my challenge paintings HERE
This is a scene from Hanbury gardens in Italy. I realised I have given this painting the same title as one I painted two years ago for the 2014 challenge. I shall have to think of a new title.

I have been comparing the two paintings and the older painting is much warmer. This has made me think of warming up the shadows in today's painting. What do you think?

Seascape Oil Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 11x14" Ocean Painting Underwater Garden

I am still reliving my recent trip to Key Largo in my paintings.  I think this is number five or six in the series I call "Coral Reef".

Purchase here
While in Key Largo we went out seven miles to the coral reef in a glass bottom boat.  I got really sea sick when they powered down over the reef and did not enjoy it as much as I would have liked to.

detail
But, I kept my eyes on the reef as much as I could, and took some photos.  I did love the trip out and the trip back.  I could not take my eyes off the stunning aqua and blue waters.

These paintings are more impressions than actual scenes.

Figure in a street, by Joseph Mahon

An experimental impasto oil  painting of a figure in a Street in Waterford, Ireland. I used a palette knife to create the effects of light and shadow, along with some megilp medium. The megilp sets up pretty quickly, being an alkyd based medium and the surface becomes a little tacky after a while, but 3-4 days to dry.

Small Oil Painting, Tree Painting, Daily Painting, Fall Color Maple Tree, 6x8" Oil

I painted this little piece last fall, looking out the window of my studio in the Smoky Mountains.  It was a cold, gray, rainy day, and the little tree seemed to glow.

It reminded me of the little engine that could.  (I think I can, I think I can)

I always enjoy slinging paint around with a palette knife.  I highly recommed it, so if you have not tried it...........

Siesta Time, French Village Scene
palette knife painting by Marion Hedger
Oil on 40x50cm gallery wrap canvas

As we take our drives out and about we always seem to hit the villages just after lunch time. The villages seem deserted and all the shops are closed giving the village a deceptive calmness.

I feel this painting needs something to give it a bit of zing, so I will put it aside for now and re-assess it in a few days. Contact me if to reserve this painting.

Daily Painting, Underwater Painting, Key Largo Sea Turtle, Small Oil Painting, 8x8x1.5" Oil

I am still working on my Coral Reef Series.  This is #4.  I tried to capture the glorious colors of the area and the relaxing, tranquil atmosphere.  This piece was painted using both brush and palette knife.  The 1.5" deep sides are painted a dark value, allowing it to be hung with or without a frame.

I hope you are enjoying this series as much as I am.  Thanks for reading by blog today.

Tropical Red, White & Blue by Ann McCann 12 X 16 Oil

(c)Tropical Red, White & Blue by Ann McCann 12 X 16 Oil, 2016

This was a 4th of July bouquet that I admired. I originally planned to paint the flag behind the flowers (see below) but decided that would be too busy. I love all the bright reds, oranges and blues. This is for a room that needs a little punch to it!

This is a scene from our last lavender trip. We were in a different area than usual and some of the hillside were covered in brilliant yellow which contrasted so well with the lavender. This is a study in not over-working and keeping it loose with a larger painting in mind.
By the way - the yellow was broom in full flower. Wonderful.

Coral Reef Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 8x8" Underwater Painting

I am still inspired by my trip to Key Largo a few weeks ago.

This painting is #3 in my Coral Reef Series.  I painted with a palette knife and all those gorgeous tropical colors.

purchase here

I was happy with the way this  one turned out, until my grandson (14 years old) came over for a visit and somehow managed to stick his foot right in the middle of the wet paint.  I couldn't blame him, because I was the one who put it on the floor!  Duh!

He was devastated, but five minutes later, all was repaired and I like the final results much better than the original version.

I am really enjoying this series as each one I do, instantly takes me back to the wonderful and magical time we spent on Key Largo.

Good things have been happening at Carol Schiff Studio, and I hope to have some exciting news to share with you soon.

Abstract Seascape Oil Painting, Tropical Waters, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 11x14x1.5"

Continuing on my tropical journey to the Florida Keys.  Today's post is my impressions of the sea off the coast of southern Florida.

It is hard to find more fun (in the studio), than to dig into a big pile of paint, with your knife, and just go to town.  Adding and subtracting values and hues........puts me in the zone every time.

detail
As much as I love creating all this yummy texture, I can only do it for a few days, before I start to crave a little structure and strong composition.  Each day I work on this coral reef series, I get a little less abstract and and little more impressionist.

Join me on my journey.....

Winter Sky by Ann McCann 5 X 7 Oil

I painted this in a 30 day painting challenge last January. I went out with my camera on late afternoon in December and took a lot of photos at a local park. The sky was so beautiful that I couldn't resist a Van Gogh style!

Abstract Seascape Painting, Small Oil Painting, Tropical Ocean 8x8x1.5"

Fresh off a trip to the Florida Keys, I returned inspired by the gorgeous water colors. I started a new series I call "Coral Reef". This is the first piece of the series entitled "Wakes".

I was captivated with the colors of the sea as we rode out to the coral reef.

The boat wake followed us out seven miles from shore.

It was my first trip to the keys in many years, and a had forgotten the lure of the tropical beauty.

California Landscape, Small Oil Painting, Coastal Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting

California has it all...mountains, oceans, wild beauty. This view of PCH speaks to the breathless views of this great state.

I couldn't get to California, so I used a photo from photographer, Ted Fuhrur, with his permission, for reference.

While painting this piece, I couldn't stop remembering the time my husband and I, drove PCH from San Francisco to Carmel.  What an experience!!

If you have never done it, I highly recommend the trip.  You will be hard pressed to duplicate the beautiful scenic landscape elsewhere.

I would like to report, that my tube of white paint is lasting longer, but it is too soon to tell.

Regardless, I am pleasently surprised with the color I achieved here, so hopefully I am on the right track.

Figure in sunlight by Josph Mahon

An experimental piece on paper, mixed media. Girl in sunlight . Oil over a watercolour and acrylic. I added clear gesso over a watercolour and acrylic and then painted with oil paints using a palette knife. At times I often leave some of the initial watercolour show in the final piece, depending if the tone works. In this case the hat was the original watercolour. I added light effects with impasto.

Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Small Seascape |Tropical Waters by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Oil SOLD

If you follow this blog, you know how much I like to paint seascapes.  Not just any seascapes, but scenes from my own little piece of the Atlantic.

SOLD

The waves were coming in quickly on this day.  I think a "tropical depression" was off shore.  Tropical depression is a weatherman's term, several steps below a hurricane, but usually meaning the winds will kick up to some degree and rain is on the horizon.  Of course, in Florida, this time of the year.....rain is always on the horizon.

This photo is a little wonky.....sorry!  When I take photos of my paintings, I usually have 5-10 paintings to photograph, trying to get 5-6 shots of each.  I get a little production line going...and I guess I didn't pay much attention to how this one was lined up :)

"Welcome Basket" by Lynda Cookson

"Welcome Basket" is rather a large painting which hung in the restaurant of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Galway, Ireland for 4 or 5 years before we moved from Ireland to France.

She measures 1 metre x 1.2 metres and adds a lovely warmth and glow to a room ... probably why she deserves the name "Welcome Basket"!
