HOW I PAINTED THIS by TOM BROWN

CLICK HERE  to purchase this 5x7 plein air oil painting
Both knives and brushes were used in creating this piece. Here’s how I painted it. When I arrived at this farm I began exploring compositions with a number of quick pencil “value” sketches like the one shown below. I carry a short mechanical pencil with a thick, soft lead and I use the side of the lead for establishing the large masses of tone. At this stage I am interested in how the big shapes of lights and darks work together rather than creating a line drawing. I use a kneaded eraser also, pinching the edge of the eraser into a thin sharp edge which I use to lift out light accents like the tree limbs. By the way, I saved this sketch and I will include it with the painting because I think it might be interesting for the buyer of the painting to see how it all began.
I started the painting with the focal point; the tractor (below). I was interested in capturing the basic shapes and colors while not belaboring it with unnecessary detail and fussiness. I got this far on the painting when passing clouds suddenly hid the sun.
I paused for a short time while the sun was hidden behind clouds because it completely changed the colors and lighting of the scene. While I waited for the clouds to pass I shot the photo below as a record of the actual setting. Notice the sheets of clear plastic on the rows of crops. These are placed over newly planted crops; I’m not entirely sure of the reason but I assume it must provide a “greenhouse” effect as well as keeping birds from the seeds.
Moments later the sun again came out and I resumed painting. I spent some time establishing the trees and limbs shown below (as I had indicated in the pencil sketch), then I put in the wall and distant mountains. From this point on it was merely a matter of taking each area to completion. I emphasized knife work in the wall behind the farm, as well as on the entire foreground areas. You can see the finished painting at the top of this blog posting.
If you found this interesting I would love to get an email from you. Thanks for stopping by, and have a colorful day. – Tom Brown

Contemporary Floral Landscape
Today is day 4 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge
I have been working on a series of floral landscape paintings for the gallery in Santa Fe.  I have explored different size canvases, different color palettes, and different techniques.  Here I used the palette knife to get thicker, more textured flowers in the foreground.  The clouds and horizon have softer brush strokes.  The path fades away into the background....allowing the viewer to drift through the field.  Contact Kay for more information on this piece.

The cold weather has truly arrived, so the pugs are piled atop one another around the easel, all in the same bed, despite there being four perfectly good beds available. I'm imagining you're on a beach right now, with a palm tree swaying nearby. Don't forget your sunscreen, for heaven's sake!

Thank you so much for all the kind notes about my Mom, she is doing a little better today. I talked to her on the phone and she told me "They got me a photo quilt!" I said, "I know!" Her appetite has picked up, also, which is a relief. Carlos made her a big pot of navy beans with ham and we bought her a can of her favorite cheese popcorn (Garrett's!) so I'm hoping she'll still have a great appetite when I visit her next week. How lucky I am to still have my Mama to hug!!!

Warm Heart Sunflower is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio as the new year arrives with a frosty greeting - congratulations to Karen Sharbo who won the original painting, New Love Hydrangeas, for my holiday giveaway. Oil on canvas, 10x10, $100

Here's my painting in the landscape

Gold Lily by Natasa Vretenar

8x10" on wood panel
Lilium Bosniacum

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilium_bosniacum

Golden lily is a flower that grows in Bosnia - it is a beautiful flower that survived hundreds of years in a mountainous areas. It was a symbol of Bosnian Kingdom, and it was even found painted on artifacts dating 2000 years back in Ilidza (outside Sarajevo). It just may appear on a few paintings for this challenge.

New "Autumn Hues" Palette Knife Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

"Autumn Hues" ©2014 Niki Gulley
12" x 12" textured oil on canvas

I painted these aspen trees with extremely thick paint and palette knife. The resulting canvas is loaded with texture, color and energy! I've painted it on 1 and 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars, with the image continuing around the edges so that it can be hung as is frameless for a contemporary look.

This fall forest looks great hung alone to brighten up a little spot, or in a grouping with some of my other seasonal aspen trees. Hang them horizontally, vertically, on a diagonal or stacked. Take a look at nikigulley.com/the-art/textured-oils/ to find complimentary companion pieces.

If interested in more information on pricing and purchasing, please e-mail Niki Gulley.

Flower Painting | Floral Still Life | Daily Painting | Horizontal Point of View II by Carol Schiff, 11x14 Oil

If this painting looks familiar to you......it should! Yes, my blog header is very similar... I painted it last year in a 6x8" format and have enjoyed painting flowers every since.

$176 + 16

I liked the original painting and wanted to see if I could paint larger using this same technique.  I have to say I  was pleased with the results.

This one is 11x14, but I think it still shows the same freshness and simplicity that I was trying to obtain.  Thank you for viewing my daily painting today.

Rush Hour Rooster - Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

Rush Hour Rooster
by Nancy Medina
10X10
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Rush Hour Rooster was one of the most colorful personalities I met while visiting San Juan Bautista Mission in Central California. He and his harem were in a quite a hurry when I nabbed a few photos - after all, the dinner bell was ringing! I can't think of a better way to show the new year has rushed in - can you believe it's 2015? Before we know it, it will be 2035 and we'll all be living on space pods with faux ocean breezes blowing in through our hologram beach scene windows! Hopefully warm beach scenes.....

I hope you have had a wonderful 2014 - I asked my art friends to share their favorite 2014 memories on my Facebook page this week, and the winning entry will receive an original 20X16 hydrangea painting. Some of the entries made me cry, some made me laugh, you can see them all right here. I'd love to hear from you. Thank you so much for joining me for this wild and crazy, artful and colorful year. May 2015 bring you incredible amounts of color and joy!

Happy New Year! "Door Knocker" by Natasa Vretenar

Knock, knock, knock! Here we are at the beginning of 2015, entering a new year, making resolutions and with optimism that every new year and a new beginning brings.
I am starting my Bosnian journey with an old door knocker, opening an old door to the first chapter in my life - place where I was born and raised - Bosnia and Hercegovina!

9x12" on birch cradled panel
"Halka"

These old door knockers can still be found on many front yard doors in Bosnia. In the past, a visitor would come to the door and knock three times to let the owner of the house know they are there. Most likely, the visitor would be unexpected.

Now, I stop and think about that for a moment. When we were growing up, there were always visitors coming to our door unexpected. Even though we did not have real door knockers on our door, it seems like the imaginary one existed there. Sometimes, family members would come and stay with us for days. My parents always welcomed them with open arms. The relatives would bring with them stories, sometimes sad ones, sometimes hilarious ones, and sometimes quite dramatic ones. They often brought gifts of food or homemade goods with them too.
This is something that just does not seem to happen in North America. Here, we do not have door knockers on our doors, not even imaginary ones. Unexpected visitors are creatures that do not exist :). We schedule our social commitments days, weeks and months in advance. We are so busy with work to welcome a friend who comes knocking.

So, if you are in my neighbourhood, please knock three times to let me know you are there (or in our virtual world, at least leave a comment :))

http://h.etf.unsa.ba/btp/content/halka/halka_na_vratima_bos/o_predmetu.htm

For this painting I used crackle Golden medium to create the look of an old cracked door. It takes a few days to really dry completely so I planned this ahead and had the board ready and dry before the challenge started.

In the next 29 days, small format paintings will be posted on my blog. I don't even know what I will be painting yet, but it sure is a challenge for me to paint bits and pieces of my memories.

I added some texture to the canvas and attacked with my acrylics.  Acrylics are always risky for me.  I don't use them often enough to feel in control.  I think, my goal for 2013 will be to use them on a more regular basis and see where they may take me.  I enjoy abstract and mixed media and acrylics are the media of choice for these works.

I would love to hear any advise you wish to share on acrylics.

MY FIRST PLEIN AIR PAINTING OF THE NEW YEAR by TOM BROWN

CLICK HERE  to purchase this painting
5x7 INCH OIL PAINTING ON MASONITE PANEL

On New Year's Morning I always enjoy getting out bright and early to create a Plein Air painting on location. This is my first painting of 2015, created on-site at a scenic location near my home in Southern California.

I am also showing a photo here that was taken as I painted this. I thought it might be interesting for other artists to see how I used my artistic license when creating this painting.

You will notice that I left out the newly-planted saplings along this walking path, as well as lamp posts. I felt these things didn't contribute anything to the scene and so I chose to leave them out. What an artist leaves OUT of a painting can be as important as what he or she includes.

As I painted this I was greeted by a number of early-bird walkers and joggers passing by. Often they would stay to watch awhile or make a comment about the inspirational setting. I like it when passersby stop to chat, and it always brightens my day.

This was a wonderful way to begin the New Year! Thanks for stopping to look, and I wish you a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This is a one-of-a-kind painting and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Don’t let this one get away. This painting is available for just $75 as an instant purchase if you act quickly. Or bidding starts at $50 and you can take your chances on the final price. Once a bid is placed the instant purchase option is disabled.

I broke out the red brushes to help stave off the polar vortex today! The hubby has been in and out of the ER for a few days, and finally is doing better. I cannot think of anything I want more for the new year than a healthy hubby. First of all, I'm a terrible nurse, and I only know how to cook using the microwave!  I hope you have good health, and a healthy cook, in the coming year!
