Well, Day 1 of painting yesterday, and 2 of my 3 were keepers. One was a scraper. I decided today that the one I did in the middle of the day, didn't deserve to see another day. But the other two, I'm so happy with. This one is a spot I have painted before, but I decided to paint in a square format this time. I wanted more sky in there, and as luck would have it, we had some very interesting skies yesterday! Really happy with the value contrasts on this one!

This one will also be in the Plein Air event here on Chincoteague Saturday evening!!

I painted these Texas bluebonnets with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I've painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 1/2" deep stretcher bars so that the paintings can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.

I am down here in Chincoteague, Virginia at the 8th Annual Plein Air Event hosted by Chincoteague Cultural Alliance. Here's a picture of me from a previous year, in their web-site. After hurricane Irene blew through the east coast the other week, I was wondering what I'd find down here, but they are doing fine! There is a new cut through on the beach at Assateague, strong storms are always moving shorelines, the power of the sea and weather is really something to behold. I spent the early morning down on the beach at Assateague Island, looking towards Tom's Cove. The weather was looking a bit questionable, as it had rained while I was eating breakfast. Luckily it was a passing shower, moving off to the west. It took it's time in clearing off though, which was fortunate because there was a beautiful misty cloud cover, and as the sun started to burn through the haze, the marsh grasses were a fantastic limey-electric green! What a beautiful way to start the day!

Plein air northwest by Becky Joy

Afternoon Light on the Rocks

Long day here in the studio. Still trying to catch up on things. Why does it take so long? Is it me?

This plein air painting is another one from the Columbia River. I was in Washington looking across the river into Oregon during the late afternoon. Almost all was in sunlight. The rocks had a very warm feel and look to them with the shadows having the most contrast in the scene.

This was at a very little used park that had an old orchard and lots of blackberries. One thing I always do while in Oregon during the summer is pick blackberries. I guess it brings back childhood memories of picking the berries, then we got a pie. Now I don't bother with the crust, but I did make a blackberry cobbler. Mmmm... wish I could have brought some home to Arizona.

Last Monday I did a painting demonstration at the Sedona Arts Center. This painting is one of two done during the demo. The demo was done indoors, so the reference that I used was the image of a previously sold plein air piece. The original piece was done in Tuscon with views to the Catalina Mountains.

I'm new to demonstrating, so I'm still figuring out how to paint with people watching what I'm doing--while also trying to talk about what I'm doing at least a little. It's great practice to work more quickly. However, I learned from the experience that I seem to need a lot of time in my process to think about what comes next, and that is hard for me to do in a demonstration. Although I completed the painting during the demo, I wasn't satisfied with it when I got it to my studio. So, if you happened to be there doing the demo you might notice the changes. I hope it was an improvement.

Hi everyone,

Some of you may not even know that I paint still lifes. It has been way too long since I have. I used to paint them fairly often, especially sunflowers. So, I figured that it was time to do so. This is one that I actually had started, but never finished. Luckily I had the pomegranates painted since they aren't in season right now. I had been wanting to paint sunflowers, so I finished these flowers and tablecloth and added a few bold strokes to the painting. I will probably paint some more in the next few weeks. I'm trying to get a few larger pieces done. Although, not as large as I used to paint.

Before the economic downturn (or whatever you want to call this), I painted large and I mean large. Common sizes for me to paint were 36x48, 40x60, and 48x60. I've even painted as large as 7'x11'. So the small ones, 6x6" were a struggle when I first started painting them, but I now love painting them. Always something new on the easel.

Stellar Jay...Palette knife painting by Peg Whitacre

This beautiful bird sat quietly on the rock while I approached and seemed quite willing to have his picture taken.  The photo was great, hence the oil portrait to follow.  I believe this guy dwells more in the western states than in the east.  I did most of the painting with a palette knife, but there are always a few little corners that become more accessible with a brush.  It is available from the artist and is a small 5x7 oil painting.  Enjoy!

This is one of the first paintings that I painted while at the Northwest Plein Air in Hood River. I was on the Washington side of the river looking toward the morning sun in the east. I liked the slight bit of warmth in the clouds contrasting with all the cool colors of the distant mountains and water. A very subtle painting with variations in the grays. As with all my small paintings the shipping is free in the US and the painting comes with a small black wrought iron display easel.

I spent quite a bit of time on the computer today just catching up after being gone for two weeks. My access on the phone was limited, but it was very useful. I like using my new smart phone. Tomorrow, more catching up and maybe a little painting.

We visited friends over the weekend and hung out in their backyard late Sunday afternoon. It has been awhile since the weather has been cool enough to spend any time outdoors. It was perfect weather - so comfortable and relaxing. There is nothing more fun than being with friends and getting to enjoy the outside. This garden scene is a backyard spruced up and ready for guests. Pillows are out and fluffed and freshly cut flowers are in a vase on the table. The sun shines in through the pillows adding sparkle to the day.

I'm finally back home from my Oregon trip, visiting family, friends and participating in the plein air show in Hood River along the gorge. I met some new friends and got to know some a little better. It was a great trip. I really enjoyed all of it.  I stayed with a couple on the Washington side of the river, a beautiful home and very nice enjoyable couple.

We painted for 5 days in a different location each day, a vineyard, a working farm, trust property, along the river at a park (which is the location of this painting), and the marina, which I didn't participate in that day. I went back to my parents to visit family. Each location was unique and beautiful. All that I painted were small. I was very limited on size and packed my frames in my suitcase, which of course meant that my clothes were really at a minimum. It was more the painting things than personal belongings. I got the important stuff there. I think if I did it again I would ship a little larger frames up there beforehand. I feel more comfortable painting 8x10 to 11x14 when painting in plein air. Oh well, I learned and it wasn't bad, but I would have liked the bigger canvases better. Also, I forgot to take some good photos of the paintings that I left there for the show.

I had talked to my good friend Jerry Fenter, an artist and writer that lives on the gorge. (Actually, we met for coffee that turned into lunch). Jerry told me that I should try to get up to Mount Adams to see the wildflowers. The day after I finished painting I took my mom and her walker on a 1 1/2 mile hike up the mountain to the meadows at the flanks of Mt. Adams. Jerry was right. The flowers were absolutely spectacular this year. I didn't paint since I was with my mom, but got plenty of photos that I may work on for some paintings.

Here is a waterfall about 30' high that I walked down into. It looked like a grotto with all the green on the floor.

When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.
