Purple Dancers is a new small work in the studio, as I pack up paints, flowers, and donuts for my class at the Dallas Arboretum tomorrow morning. I'm hoping for clear skies and low breezes, because it is peek tulip blooming time there and my camera battery is all warmed up! Stay tuned over the next few days for photos of the workshop and my students, and images from the annual Dallas Blooms Festival in the gardens!

Purple Iris and Goodbye Corporate America by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

I brought a few of my water drenched purple iris in from the chill this evening and put them under the spotlight. It took about 30 minutes for them to give up the iris ghost, but their beautiful purples hung in there just long enough for me to mix a shade of fuschia I could live with. I'm washing the brushes, putting my paints away, and mentally preparing for tomorrow, the last day of my life in corporate America. Two weeks ago, I gave my notice for my six-figure day job as a magazine director. Tomorrow I will turn in my office key, carry my cardboard box of plaques and pictures out of the office, and fulfill my dream of becoming a full time artist and art teacher. Thanks to everyone who has sent words of encouragement and courage and their own stories of making the same decision - and thriving! I am needing courage right now! I'm hopeful that my art will continue to grow, and excited about what comes next in this next chapter. One thing is certain, there is no turning back. It's time to follow some bliss!

Purple Thunder Iris is a new small work in the studio, as the storms roll through North Texas. About six more deep purple irises joined the rest of their newly blossomed friends in my yard this weekend and I simply had to paint them. I had some good news today - I was delighted that one of my sunflower painting, Sunflower Daisy Divas, was a Daily Paintworks pick! Here is the video I made while painting the sunflower, enjoy!

Early Garden Purple Iris by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Early Garden Purple Iris is based on a scene from my garden today where my purple irises are already blooming! Texas has such fickle weather, we had 35 degrees one day, and 80 degrees the next, and I suppose these purple blossoms got kicked into gear - I'm sure MUCH too early for the real iris experts taste. These bulbs originated from Argyle Acres Iris Garden, and are tiny flowers, very dark purple, and come from a vintage line of award winning irises. I love a flower with a pedigree, don't you? My flowers and my pugs both come from champion lineage, while the artist is from much humbler stock....

The days are counting down until my last day at the corporate office next Wednesday - the last day of my magazine editor day job! I would be fibbing if I didn't admit I have moments of sheer panic, wondering how I am going to pay the electric bill in August, and how we will pay taxes and car registrations and those little zingers that come every once in a while that are harder to plan for. But then I take a deep breath and tell myself, it will all work out. Where there is a will, there is a way. And I have never wanted anything more than to be an artist and an art teacher. Nothing makes me happier! Well, and donuts. And maybe chocolate...!
