An modern impressionist landscape painting featuring the remains of a Roman Fort in the Alpes Maritime area of France. Amazingly after all these years, some of the battlements are still standing and can be reached after an arduous (for me) walk up the mountain. The tree stands guard over the remains and catches the light in what is now a shady spot.

When spring was here, tulips were blooming everywhere. They always remind me of my grandmother's house where they surrounded the walkways. The house was old, my father was born there, with no paint, and early in my life, no electricity. I also remember the dreaded outhouse!

Morning Call, by New York artist, Celeste Plowden
I learned the art of acrylic and pastel painting through private instruction, after having spent my career as a designer of printed fabrics in the New York market place. I am a graduate of the College of Design, Art and Architecture at the University of Cincinnati, with a major in the History of Art, 1977. Later, I studied printed textile design at Parsons School of Design, in New York. Immediately afterward, I began free lance work for several design studios in the garment district of NYC, where I did re-coloration work for printed apparel fabrics, and sold my own designs through Bread and Butter Designs,also located in New York. In addition, during the 1980's and 1990's, I designed a number of needlecraft and stencil books for Dover Publications. Currently, I am working on a series of exotic birds and other animals done in acrylic paint, with a palette knife, for texture and brilliant color. I consider my paintings to be representational or impressionistic in nature, and I use fantasy colors because what I see often makes me feel these colors,and what would make an interesting composition, rather than using realistic colors.

The
painting is still very wet and I have had to photograph this inside
with a daylight lamp, hence the glare. I will post a better photo as
soon as the rain stops and it brightens up a bit. It will then also be
available by auction on Daily Paintworks.
I combined two challenges with this painting. The 30 day challenge and this weeks 'Interiors' challenge on Daily Paintworks. I searched the internet for suitable ideas and came across Henri le Sidaner, a French impressionist I had not heard of before. His sense of light is wonderful and he paints many interior scene. This painting is based on "Intérieur, Lumière de la Fenêtre," (interior, light from the window) a painting that was 'lost' and then found again in 2013, see here
This painting was more difficult to paint than I thought it would be and it took a long time. I learned a lot about trying to get the light and shade just right, although I think I could still have lightened the lights and half shadows some more. I also found I was fiddling too much for the size of the painting - trying to put in too much detail - after all my painting was an 'impression of the impressionist' style.
I have another one of his paintings lined up to copy. I shall see if I can control my tones more in the next one.

When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.

Charging down its stone cut course, torrents of water rush through grey boulders past green and gold bracken. Headlong and unrestrained the waters crash downstream, while above they splash into the airy distance a glowing, hazy tiara of misty sunlight. Thick brushstrokes of radiant oils define the powerful landscape carrying your eye through a complex composition of dynamic diagonals cleaved with the vertical cascade, caressed with a delicate crossing of gold dusted branches. A painting of power and energy balanced by graceful strokes of beauty, I wanted “Rushing Desires” to be about texture, movement, mystery and the cathartic feeling in nature.
