Field and Stream daily oil painting by BECKY JOY

This is a 7x5 that I painted a week or so ago. I have posted this painting for sale on Zatista for $100.

To purchase this painting click here. I used the palette knife mostly in the grass and some on the trees and water. The grass cools and grays in the background and has less texture in it to make it recede.

I didn't get very much painting done today. I started a painting, but wiped it off after having it blocked-in. I've posted a photo of a 5x7 painting "floating" in the frame. I thought I would show you how I like the little ones framed. It makes them appear much larger since the whole painting is exposed. I will be taking this painting plus 3 more to Windrush Gallery in Sedona.

Tomorrow I should be working in the studio after my morning delivery. Today was kind of a lazy day. After framing in the morning, I spent most of the day reading and laying around. Back to work tomorrow!

Old Shed/Barn? daily oil painting by BECKY JOY

OK, I'm continuing with the buildings. This 5x7 is an old barn?/shed that I saw in the Four Corners area. I have this listed on Zatista for $100. I had fun painting the metal roof, the paint was just gliding on with the palette knife. It was unclear what was in the back part of the shed, but some light was coming into it and there was a lot of interesting shapes and colors to paint.

I got a call today from John at Windrush Gallery in Sedona. I'm delivering a couple new paintings to him on Friday. He really likes some of the new work that I am doing, including the houses. I'm floating two of the 5x7's in 6x8 frames. When I get them done tomorrow, I will take a photo to show you how they look by floating the paintings in the frame. I'm having a good time painting these little structures and the response has been good so I think I will paint a few more. I always have liked old sheds, barns and funky houses, not to live in, mind you, but they are interesting to look at.

The White House daily oil painting by BECKY JOY

I have posted this painting on my website for sale for $100 which includes shipping.

I am continuing my series of houses and buildings. I didn't intend to keep painting them, but I am really enjoying myself. I liked the roofline of the two parts to this house and the shadow colors which varied from warm to cool. I pushed the orange trim. It was a little darker in reality, but to get the sense of light I used cad orange with titanium. The garbage can I thought was a nice little detail. I like those kinds of things that aren't "pretty", but add a human touch. All the whites in the painting actually have color in them so that they each vary from the other. The driveway and road were dirt.

The one thing I realize now that I forgot was the little vent on the roof. I wanted to add that to break up the space. I'm not at the studio now, so I think I will add that tomorrow or the next day. I know I will be painting on Sunday, but maybe not tomorrow. Should I continue with the houses? What do you think?

Painting Progression and daily painting by BECKY JOY

I posted this painting on EBay for a starting bid at $75. This is from a photo of a little house that I saw in southern Arizona several years ago. There were toys littering the yard and a dirt driveway. The roof was the main thing that attracted me to this place. The rust on the roof makes interesting colors to work with. You can see that I used the palette knife on the roof and the vegetation in the foreground and the grass. By doing so, I have given the painting more depth. In a painting like this one which has no far away view, you need to use soft edges to help create the depth. The tree in the background, the edge of the roof that is farther away and the house windows all have soft edges (at least part of the edge) which helps in giving that depth to the scene. I like using edges in all of my paintings, it also gives some variety to the painting. The palette knife works well for the hard edges and the brush for the soft edges.

Hillside Farm Fields by BECKY JOY

This painting is on EBay with a bid starting at $75.

The layers of hills and fields in this painting naturally give it depth. The colors are richer and warmer as it moves forward in space. A difference in this painting is that I used the palette knife more in the background than the foreground. You can see the thick directional brushstrokes going down the hill side. I loaded the paint on my brush and put in some confident, direct strokes. In the background I carefully layered color with my palette knife. I used some violets and alizarine in the green to cool it and gray the color so that it would recede. The eye goes toward the grouping of trees on the hillside since they are surrounded by light values and the strong color of the golden hillside.

I didn't get a lot of painting done today, errands to take care of. I will continue with my painting and photographing the progression of it tomorrow.

Trees and Field oil daily painting by BECKY JOY

This 5x7 painting is for sale for $100 which includes shipping. I wanted the dark trees to be against a light background and foreground. As in any grouping the objects (the trees) should all vary in size. I also put some dead branches to give a little color and variety. I like depth in my paintings which the cool colors to the orange in the foreground gives, but also the texture in the foreground helps to bring that forward. I have the hints of a fence in the field.

I got quite a bit of painting done today. I finished the foreground of a 12x16 and started another the same size. I took some photos of that one from the beginning. I hope to post the progression of the painting start to finish. I should have it up on the blog by Wed.

Mountain Lake impressionist oil painting by BECKY JOY

I have been working in the studio on this painting for the last three days. The painting is a 20x20 oil. This is a painting that I repainted. I like the color that I achieved in this painting and I also used the palette knife in the foreground foliage and rocks and the grass, trees and logs. I think that the painting has much more life to it than my previous version. I've been painting like crazy trying new things with color. It is very exciting. This painting is posted on my website. In fact, I put it on the opening page.
