I went out yesterday to the Superstition with a group painting. This is my painting from the afternoon. I still need to photograph the first one from the morning. It got a little warm out there in the afternoon. Then I left a little too late and driving across town I got stuck in the rush hour traffic. Another good reason for being an artists. I would hate to think about having to go through that every day.

Anyway, I broke down the different planes in large colored masses and then grouped the plants in the front for the design that I wanted. There were paths leading down this bank which drew me to this particular scene. I just changed the design. Overall, I was pleased with the day for painting. A good day!

I painted this one yesterday at Spur Cross Ranch along Cave Creek. I was with some friends painting and forgot to bring my paints on the hike down to the stream. I didn't want to go back and borrowed from a friend. You really don't feel good about borrowing too much paint, so it was a little scimpy on the painting. So I finished it up today with a little more paint and took out some light that I had in the right foreground, recomposing the painting. It was just a little too scattered with light. I was having a good time with the color here. All in all, a good day.

I started a new blog Painting, the Best of the Week. I'm getting a variety of artists on the site, some that paint "daily paintings" and some that "paint daily". I just want the best work of the week on the site. Some of you might find it informative when the artists describe their piece. Check it out.

Also, I have openings in my workshops both in Pasadena, CA and at the Superstitions in AZ. Both are plein air workshops.

This is such a simple scene, but for some reason I was having a difficult time painting. Some days are just like that. I redid almost all of it from the beginning to the end. I would put down a stroke and no, not right, wipe it out and do it again.

I went out plein air painting this morning, but didn't finish the painting. I walked down into a canyon and forgot my tubes of paint, so it was a little scimpy on the paint. I borrowed from a friend, but you only want to borrow so much. I got enough done to finish it in the studio, except my camera battery went dead. So, I used my friend's camera. She just emailed me the photos tonight. Tomorrow I'll finish painting it. One of those days.

I started a new blog today, Painting, The Best of the Week. It's another blog for paintings, but a twist to it. I'll be asking artists to post to it once a week with what they think is their best painting along with their thoughts on why and about the painting, their thoughts and process. I posted the first painting, maybe you can be the next. Each contributor will have their name in the links. I want to keep the blog simple with each post and not a lot of sidebar gadgets, etc. There are a couple of pages, about the site and events for artists.

I'll be back here tomorrow with that plein air painting.

Today I had more painting time. I took a day off from construction, except to hold board a couple of times.

I started this painting and wiped it off not once, but twice. The second time I liked the look of the canvas in places where I wiped it off, so I kept it thin in the sky. I added the cloud with the brush and the light with the palette knife. This was a painting more about color than anything else. I like adding a touch of light in the ground to help balance the light in the sky. It gives a little more interest to the painting than just sky.

I also finished a larger painting today and touched up one that I realized after looking at it for a while that I wasn't really done with it. I needed to be more aggressive with the paint. I'll have to photograph it later. 

I got a call from Link Gallery in Wyoming. They received the paintings that I sent them and everything shipped just fine. Always a relief to hear that.

This 11x14 oil is a rework of a plein air painting that I wasn't totally happy with. I changed the design a little adding more layers of trees for depth and atmosphere and worked on the color. I love the colors in this piece.

I'm in OR in the Yamhill County right now visiting family and plein air painting. I'll be posting some of those that I've done. I'm also getting ready to teach a three day workshop this weekend in the Portland area.

I just had someone contact me about teaching a workshop in the Fort Worth area. I thought I would post that on my blog with the hopes that there might be more interest in getting a workshop together. Just a thought to think about. If you are interested or know others in that area that might be, email me and let me know.

Sunset oil daily impressionist painting by BECKY JOY

The sunset last night here in Phoenix was really nice. It wasn't a screaming bright one, but soft and subtle. The colors here are reminiscent of that sunset. I used some viridian and titanium white in the sky along with variations of cad red, cad yellow, alizarine, dioxazene purple and ultramarine. Actually, the whole painting used those colors. I place the lighter warm colors on the ground to lead the viewer into the painting and make some interest in the foreground. With the purchase of this painting, you will receive a small black wrought iron display easel so that you have the option of not framing the painting.

I posted this painting on EBay for a starting bid at $75. This is from a photo of a little house that I saw in southern Arizona several years ago. There were toys littering the yard and a dirt driveway. The roof was the main thing that attracted me to this place. The rust on the roof makes interesting colors to work with. You can see that I used the palette knife on the roof and the vegetation in the foreground and the grass. By doing so, I have given the painting more depth. In a painting like this one which has no far away view, you need to use soft edges to help create the depth. The tree in the background, the edge of the roof that is farther away and the house windows all have soft edges (at least part of the edge) which helps in giving that depth to the scene. I like using edges in all of my paintings, it also gives some variety to the painting. The palette knife works well for the hard edges and the brush for the soft edges.
