I don't know why I had never thought of doing this before.  Just this past week, I've started doing 30 minute quick study paintings on unstretched canvas, which is really inexpensive.  I have found this so liberating.  Since I am only committing to 30 minutes, I can now paint each day, even busy ones.  Since the canvases don't take up any space and don't cost much, there is no stress for perfection - just pure painting fun!  I used to create a vision in my mind, collecting photos to make sure I had the fully developed idea in mind and then went directly to creating the final piece - a little pressure!  Now when I have an idea or inspiration for a painting, I can try it out on a study.  If I find a winner, I take more time to create the piece on a stretched canvas, with the prep-work already done.  Here is the first landscape study I did.  I had so much fun, I ended up doing 3 studies that day.

Paint America and Salon International 2011

This last week brought a lot of news about shows for me. I had two paintings selected for Paint America, "Apples" was selected for the Top 50 mini and "Sunlight Through the Oak" was selected for the Top 100.
My painting "Remains of the Rain" was accepted into Salon International 2012 at the prestigious Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, TX. On top of all that, I received an invititation to participate in the the Sedona Plein Air Festival next October.

FIELD AND ROAD oil painting by BECKY JOY

I started from a photo when I painted this. I loved the curves in the road going across the field. I designed the rest of the painting around this road. It is a good painting to see all the greens that you can create. Mixing, mixing, nothing out of the tube. Almost every color on my palette was mixed with the green.

I continued today filling out applications. OMG there are a lot due right now. In the next couple of days there will be more to do.

Tomorrow I will be out plein air painting. Its supposed to be a cloudy day and I would like to do another "gray" painting.

Field and Stream daily oil painting by BECKY JOY

This is a 7x5 that I painted a week or so ago. I have posted this painting for sale on Zatista for $100.

To purchase this painting click here. I used the palette knife mostly in the grass and some on the trees and water. The grass cools and grays in the background and has less texture in it to make it recede.

I didn't get very much painting done today. I started a painting, but wiped it off after having it blocked-in. I've posted a photo of a 5x7 painting "floating" in the frame. I thought I would show you how I like the little ones framed. It makes them appear much larger since the whole painting is exposed. I will be taking this painting plus 3 more to Windrush Gallery in Sedona.

Tomorrow I should be working in the studio after my morning delivery. Today was kind of a lazy day. After framing in the morning, I spent most of the day reading and laying around. Back to work tomorrow!

Trees and Field oil daily painting by BECKY JOY

This 5x7 painting is for sale for $100 which includes shipping. I wanted the dark trees to be against a light background and foreground. As in any grouping the objects (the trees) should all vary in size. I also put some dead branches to give a little color and variety. I like depth in my paintings which the cool colors to the orange in the foreground gives, but also the texture in the foreground helps to bring that forward. I have the hints of a fence in the field.

I got quite a bit of painting done today. I finished the foreground of a 12x16 and started another the same size. I took some photos of that one from the beginning. I hope to post the progression of the painting start to finish. I should have it up on the blog by Wed.
