In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. I chose vibrant, cheerful yellows contrasted against a violet blue sky filled with big, puffy clouds. And, by arranging the aspens in a circular pattern heightened by thick, curving paint strokes, that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery are enhanced.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

This contemporary aspen painting is drying, and I will be getting it framed up. I will probably put a wide silver moulding on it. This color palette that I used has more green in it than I normally like to use. I was very careful not to get a muddy green when I was mixing colors. I wanted a clean and bright yellow-green that looks fresh and makes you think of springtime. I used the palette knife of this one. Thanks for looking at the art on this blog. I wanted this birch painting to be very colorful and whimsical, like through the eyes of a child looking into the treetops with fascination. I also like how sometimes the difference between realism and abstraction isn't that great at all, and in this case, by just inverting and adding tree trunks to Elizabeth Padgett's abstract painting, the result can become a realistic scene in "Passionate Embrace."
Please join Dallas artists, Niki Gulley and Elizabeth Padgett, for this Two Woman Show "Opposites Attract," featuring their paintings from two different perspectives – realism and abstraction. Artist Reception is Sun. Feb. 5 from 2 to 4 pm at the Jaycee Center for the Arts, 1975 Puritan Dr. between Story Rd. and MacArthur in Irving, TX. Exhibit runs Jan. 29 - Feb 23, 2012.

This painting is colorful, contemporary and would great on a narrow but wall with a high ceiling. I started using earthy muted tones for the ground up to the horizon line. This palette knife painting is an drying at the studio. I purposely picked earthy, neutrals for the palette.(A different direction than the bright, bold palette that I normally use.) The colors are mixed, layered and applied with a palette knife. By the way, I just got two new large knifes...they look like weapons! Winter Birch trees oil painting by Niki Gulley

Growing up in the midwest, I loved the first snowfall of the year when everything would get a beautiful dusting of pristine white powder, including even the tiniest of branches in the treetops above. If you caught that moment early enough in the morning before anything had disturbed the intricate frosted web, it was just magical. I wanted to capture that brief beautiful moment in "Climbing Trees" when the sunlight dances through the icing on the treetops and you can feel yourself looking up in wonderment just like you did when you were a kid. Using extremely thick oil paint and palette knives allowed me to recreate the various textures of the birches and ice-encrusted branches.

I thought it would be appropriate to finish, sign, and photograph "Aspen Rhapsody In Snow" because of all the snow that we were inundated with this week here in Georgia. This piece is 32"x70". It is a triptych, acrylic, brush and palette knife painting on a wide canvas. I am currently going to hang it in my dining room, but I could be persuaded to sell it if you are interested. I love painting the aspens in snow and have been doing so for over twenty-seven years! This painting has been quite the labor of love!
