New Paintings by Paula Formanek
A new original "Golden Trio", oil with knife on panel, 20 x 25 cm, part of my "Sunflower Series". I completed this painting quickly with some leftover paint on my last day in Europe. It's now drying in my studio. Soon, I plan to use this to create a large painting.

"Moonrise" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas
Several months ago I was contacted by a woman who had located my artworks on-line. She had looked for some time for an artist to fulfill her vision of a moon rising over mountains and she found me! Well, to be honest, I was a bit skeptical, as she informed me that she didn't want a lot of color in this painting. I wasn't sure I could go without a lot of color, as that is sort of my trademark, but I thought about it and decided to stretch my boundaries. We stayed in touch and gradually worked through quite the process, as it was also the largest painting I have done. It was thrilling to have this experience and you might have noticed, if you read my blogs, that I am still in the throes of being obsessed by moons rising over the horizon! Thank you, Deborah, this has been such a worthwhile and fun effort!

"Golden Moon" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on linen panel
Another
in my "Lunar"tique series, this is the golden moon we see in our Rocky
Mountain skies on occasion. Of course, no two moonrises are the same
and we are due for a full moon this weekend. Perhaps it will look
something like this painting!

Light
Light
5" x 7"
oil on panel
The warm glow of a candle is always appealing in a darkened room. It can mean decoration or essential light and watching the flickering flame is addictive as watching a fireplace.
This was a demo piece in my recent palette knife workshop - Painting Christmas. My 2015 workshop list is on my website and registration opens on December 15th. If you're a mailing list subscriber, you'll find a discount code in the December Studio News which goes out tonight. Sign up is easy on all the links below.

Gold Mercury
Gold Mercury
5 x 7 oil on panel
And still more mercury glass!
Its more about the challenge of painting reflections than the actual shape of a subject for me. The light is likely what draws me to paint water and boats. Reflected light and shadow need careful observation and consideration before putting down a single palette knife stroke. Using a fractured stroke in areas, I drag wet paint across the picture plane, pulling colour from one area into another, creating lost edges and movement.
I probably look more than I paint in fact - like the carpenter's saying "Measure twice, cut once." Its similar for artists. The longer you spend observing and taking in visual information on shape, colour and value, the better chance you have for success than if you just slap down paint then try to correct in on the support. That's when mud and frustration happen.
