Painting Monet's Garden with Niki Gulley

“Monet’s Passion” ©2011 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” textured oil on wrap around canvas

Early morning light washes over Monet’s water lily garden in his beloved home at Giverny, France. Quiet, tranquil colors rim the pond, reflected in the glassy surface, waters casting back sky and foliage in a radiance of hues. Iris leaves front the pond, lilies break its surface, willows brush the water’s edge – everything just as Monet would have seen, now in a fresh, contemporary new work of art.

I'll have several of my paintings from Paris along with my landscapes closer to home this weekend at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas. This is my last art show for 2011, so hope you can stop by. For more details on the show, click here dallasculture.org/bathhouseculturecenter/calendarDetail.asp?id=7770.

Or, if you would like to join us in May for our next ArtTrek to Paris, France, and paint Monet's Gardens in person, visit nikigulley.com/?page_id=1420, which goes into detail about our upcoming Plein Air Painting & Photography Workshops. Registration deadline for Paris is today!

Mac the Rooster by Kay Wyne

Mac the Rooster
Palette Knife Painting on 10" x 17" Raymar Panel
This palette knife painting was inspired by a kitchy wooden rooster from Macomb, Illinois. Mary Karas liked roosters, and this one had a prominent place in the Karas kitchen. I remember it well, as I spent many hours at their house growing up. Mrs. Karas gave me this rooster years ago, and it has been roosting in the Wyne kitchen.
Here is the wooden rooster next to the painting. I jazzed up the feathers and exaggerated the length of his neck, and added some color to him. He does have personality! It will probably take months to dry since the paint is very thick. I did not use a brush, only palette knives. Mac was fun to paint, especially since he has a history! Thanks to Mrs. Karas for passing this fine rooster on to the Wyne family, and thank you for viewing this blog and my art. Kay at 214-532-0325 or kay@kwyne.com.

Art Treks - Paris - deadline this Friday

"Culmination" ©2011 Niki Gulley
Three 48" x 30" canvases to form a 48" x 90" triptych
textured mixed media on wrap around canvas

I decided it would be a fun challenge to create an extremely large painting, and I wanted the final piece to be very uplifting, colorful and full of energy. Opting for warm colors and working with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives, I chose this lily pond reference from our visit to Monet's Gardens in Giverny, France. The grounds were breathtaking and I could actually see his paintings come to life. I was drawn to the energetic flow and yet calming serenity in this view, and I positioned the water lilies and my paint strokes in a circular pattern to add to that mood. The morning light peeking through the distant foliage added to a sense of mystery and promise that I wanted to capture in paint, and share with you that feeling of hope.

I'll have several of my paintings from Paris along with my landscapes closer to home this weekend at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas. This is my last art show for 2011, so hope you can stop by. First Blush by Deborah Harold

This is one of my favorites from the recent Leslie Saeta Palette knife class I took.
I must admit that I wasn't impressed with the photo when she gave us the assignment, but as the colors and values started to take shape I found it to be a really interesting and fun study!
She uses great tools to teach for example, a blurred photo to start, to focus just on the shape, paint shapes not things. We all know this but it is difficult not to get caught up in the thing you are painting.
When you just paint shapes and finally add the touches that make it the "thing" it is a great way to learn to be loose and not get caught up in the object.

Charlie's Chili Restaurant by Janet Bludau, Palette Knife Paintings

6" x 6"
Oil on Raymar Archival Board

This painting has been juried into the Randy Higbee 6" Squared show which starts on December 3rd.  It is my favorite local exhibition with artists all over the country represented.  The maximum number of pieces that will hang per artist on opening night is 3 and I have 2 selected.  I feel wonderful to have been chosen.
Framed in a beautiful floater frame this piece will have a price of $250 and hang in the show until December 23rd.  If it doesn't sell at the Higbee show it will then be able through my website:  http://janetbludau.fineartstudioonline.com/
Charlie's Chili is a local Newport Beach spot that serves up great chili omelets.  It opened in 1967 and is still going strong.  Not only does it serve up a great breakfast but it is open late at night.  Early on, in the beginning,  it was only open (I think) AFTER the local bars closed because the main cook worked at The Quiet Woman and could only work his shift at Charlie's after he closed at QW.
I remember driving with friends back in high school for almost an hour to get to Charlie's. This was before I lived 10 minutes away.  We thought their "Late night Chili" was the best!

Plein Air Painting at White Rock Lake

5" x 7" textured oil painting, White Rock Lake, by Niki Gulley

Dallas Plein Air Painting Workshop with Niki Gulley
Day 2 - Afternoon Location:  Sunset Bay, White Rock Lake

In the afternoon at White Rock Lake, we switched locations to find better light on our subjects. Everyone was drawn to this peaceful bay and the vibrant fall colors. Even though every painter basically sketched the same scene, it was fun seeing each artist's individual style come thorugh. With just a short amount of time left at the end of the day, I quickly captured the lake, shoreline and autumn foliage with a palette knife and my leftover paint before starting our critique.

A perfect ending to our plein air painting workshop at the Dallas Arboretum and White Rock Lake – sharing our work from each day with new friends after a gorgeous weekend of painting outside. Thanks guys!

Looking For You by Kay Wyne

Looking For You
18" x 36" x 2 1/4"
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This painting is drying....I used a cooler background color than I normally do on this canvas. The canvas is rather thick, and gives the canvas a chunky, heavy look. I liked the size....more of a small to medium size canvas. I wanted to create some depth, with the viewer looking through the canvas, eye wandering around. The colors on the canvas change from deep violets and purple and greys to roses, oranges and ochers.
Here is a close-up shot of the canvas, as you can see the colors better. A wide, flat brush and palette knife was used to create this painting. Please contact Kay if you are interested in this piece, or any of her other paintings. Thanks, Kay at 214-532-0325 or kay@kwyne.com.

Delivered this painting to its new home.  It hasn't had time enough to dry, but my collectors have decided to sit it on their mantle until it is dry enough to frame.  Not so boring watching paint dry when the rich, warm colors look so great in their living room.  I can't wait to see it framed and hung!

Original oil painting Downhill Racer impressionism fine art by Karen Tarlton

A personal favorite! Just dry and ready to ship.

Inspiration:  I grew up in Lake Tahoe and met my husband when we were much younger, when he was a skier on the Olympic Valley Ski Team in Squaw Valley.  I used to love watching him fly down the steep mountain as graceful as a ballerina!  It's no surprise that he now flies the F-16 for the airforce is it?  He makes me proud each day!

Stand Tall by Kay Wyne

Stand Tall
20" x 60" Oil on Linen
Gallery Wrap - No frame needed.
This contemporary abstract oil painting is drying....it is on oatmeal/natural linen. I loved the linen so much that I did not want to completely paint over all of it, so the natural color of the linen is exposed on all four sides and some of the actual painting. I used a wide brush and palette knife to create this abstract aspen painting. It has a deep, rich color palette, and would look great at the end of a hall or a tall vertical space in a home. Please contact Kay at kay@kwyne.com for more information on this painting. Thanks for looking! Kay

Most anyone who has vacationed in Newport Beach knows of the Crab Cooker Restaurant.  It has been serving wonderful meals on paper plates and wine in plastic cups to locals and visitors since 1951.  On your way out the door you help yourself to a salt water taffy in a huge jar but you sort of have to GO FISHING for a piece of it with the tricky tongs.  The waitresses call everyone honey and slide your plate across the formica table at you - its great!

daily oil sunset landscape oil painting by BECKY JOY

Sunset Road oil 5x7 $95. Click here to bid.
I painted this yesterday as a study for a larger painting that I am working on in the studio. The painting on the easel is 24"x36". I will try and take some photos as I am working on it.  I had a photo of a road that I liked. That was my inspiration for this painting. (I think I've heard that story before.)
Yesterday, I found out that I had all four paintings that I submitted to Randy Higbee's show, 6" Squared. YAY! If you didn't follow the show last year, you should do it this time around. It was a lot of fun following it online. I hope to get to the show this year. There is some fabulous art in the show, some friends, personal and online that will be there. And, new ones to meet.
I also got some news in the last two days. I will be represented by Mountainsong Galleries in Carmel, CA. They held the American Impressionist Society Show last month. My piece sold before the show started. It was a painting that got a lot of attention and I was told could have been sold many times. Long story short, they emailed me and I'm in the gallery. So now, its frame and ship.
Well back to work. Talk to you all later.

Painting at White Rock Lake with Niki Gulley

9" x 12" oil painting, White Rock Lake, by Niki Gulley

Dallas Plein Air Painting Workshop with Niki Gulley
Day 2 - Morning Location: White Rock Lake

On the second day of our plein-air painting workshop, we enjoyed a beautiful morning at White Rock Lake. Focusing on capturing water and the morning light, each painter picked a different vantage point, some choosing only natural subjects and others depicting sailboats on the horizon. I chose to paint these colorful boats largely for their vibrant colors and I liked how the line of the pier leads your eye back to the docked vessels. With a gentle breeze, the water had a little movement and shimmer to it that I suggested along with the vibrant foliage in this peaceful inlet. A perfect autumn morning!

Gourds, Monica Burnette

One of the things I love about fall is gourds. I love having them around the house to just catch your eye with their unusual shapes and colors. I used to look forward to buying them every year, but somehow my husband has taken over that duty. He comparison shops carefully, picking out each gourd with the precision you'd expect of someone picking out a big ticket item, not a three-for-a-dollar gourd. The slightest bruise, and out it goes. He puts great thought into where each gourd should go in the house. He has been kind enough to allow me to paint a few. However, this year, he *did* suggest I take a photo of them before I touch them, so I could return them to the *exact* spot I found them. Thankfully, his hearing is not the best, and he couldn't hear my whispers of "OCD!" whenever he walked by..... I spent last weekend painting a few gourds, and tried my best to return them to their designated spots.
