Poppy Meadows in Provence by Marion Hedger

Provence Meadow palette knife painting
15x15cm (6x6inch) oil on box canvas 1.5cm deep

Can you guess I love painting this meadow. This is my third painting, and probably not my last. I cheated (sorry, I mean used my artistic license)  a little with this one by replacing the distant vineyard with an olive grove.

For comparison I am showing the previous two

The edges have been painted black so a frame is unnecessary.

I've been asked to show the original reference for these paintings, and here it is

Impressionist Landscape Painting, Provence Flower Show by Marion Hedger

Provence Flower Show
by Marion Hedger
Palette knife painting
30x40cm (12x16") on stretched canvas

Last week we took a drive to see the cherry blossom in the Vaucluse area of Provence. We missed the cherry blossom but did find some gorgeous poppy meadows and of course I had to paint one.

Poppy Meadow Haut Alpes palette knife painting by Marion Hedger

"Poppy Meadow Haut Alpes, knife painting"
by Marion Hedger
Oil on artist quality on mm thick MDF canvas board
Size = 18x24cm (approx 7"x10")

A modern impressionist Provencal landscape painting featuring a poppy meadow as far as the eye can see. The flowers dance across the field to the distant mountains.

Painted with a palette knife, the knife strokes are thick and juicy giving this painting a lot of texture as can be seen on the close-up photos. The use of the palette knife means the colour stays fresh and vibrant giving a vibrant painting.

Poppy Field Provence, oil painting by Marion Hedger

Poppy Field Provence
Palette knife painting
15x20cm (approx 6"x8") Oil on board
For sale in my Etsy shop
It will soon be time to go and see the lavender fields blooming. Along the way there are many hay meadows that are awash with colour. The poppies, in particular always call out to be painted. Painted on a pink ground which is allowed to show through to add sparkle to the painting. Using the palette knife and thick impasto paint, allows the colours to remain true. Here is a close-up of some of the knife work
These little paintings take on a life of their own, and tell me which way to go LOL.
