SOLD ~ Coronado Flower Cottage and Painting on the Island by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Coronado Island Flower Cottage
by Nancy Medina

SOLD
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

I'm packing paints, brushes, and palette in the suitcase for my solo show on Coronado Island, near San Diego, California Saturday, April 20. I'll be creating a new container garden at Art and Frames by Wood Gallery that day, and painting in their beautiful back yard garden from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm. I sure hope all my San Diego friends have a chance to come by and heckle me cheer me on! This year is the 88th anniversary of the Flower Show on the Island.

Here is a slide show from past years to give you an idea of the absolute amazing color you will encounter if you make it out to the island this time of year. If you are out there and you see some very odd lady with paint on her clothes standing in people's yards taking pictures like crazy, be sure to wave, it will be me!

SOLD ~ Follow the Light White Hydrangeas ~ Class Demo by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Follow the Light White Hydrangeas
by Nancy Medina

SOLD
16X20
Oil on Archival Panel

Follow the Light White Hydrangeas was my class demonstration this morning for my workshop in Irving, Texas. We had a full house, plenty of sunshine outside, and two boxes of fresh glazed and chocolate covered donuts to keep us fueled up for a day of flower painting. I loved how each of my students had a completely unique approach to their paintings in our afternoon, step by step paintalong. Some ladies chose lovely, muted violet backgrounds, some really pushed the golden shadows and one cute gal introduced a mauve and pink background in six different shades that was just short of spectacular next to her bright white flower. No surprise that she won the cutest shoes award! Tomorrow we have two entire tables of fresh flowers to choose from. Stay tuned here tomorrow. After the muses make their selection, I'll be sharing our painting escapades with you!

So many talented ladies, so many gorgeous hydrangeas!

Winter Poppy Garden by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Winter Poppy Garden
by Nancy Medina
36X24
Palette Knife/Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Winter Poppy Garden is the newest painting in the studio, and since it is a holiday weekend, it seemed the perfect time to make one my Mom's favorite cakes from scratch. Jo's Chocolate Cake came from one of those old co-op cookbooks from the 1960s. I thought you might like to see the recipe exactly as it appears, authentic with no fancy fonts or artificial ingredients included, so I've placed a photo of the page on my art blog today. I substituted milk with a teaspoon of sour creme for the buttermilk, and it tasted just as good. Be sure to serve warm with a big glass of milk! It's a perfect snack for a chilly winter evening while lounging on the couch with a snuggly friend a great old movie on TV.

White Rock Lake oil painting by Niki Gulley

9" x 12" oil painting by Niki Gulley at White Rock Lake

I painted this small oil painting at White Rock Lake earlier this week, getting ready for my Plein Air Workshop this weekend. It was a perfect morning – blue skies and a gentle breeze, with an ideal temperature. I was attracted to the multi-colored sailboats and the interesting pattern they formed. With so many boats, I sketched out my composition and then I had to paint very quickly before the light changed – a fun challenge and an enjoyable, peaceful morning.

White Rock Lake painting with Niki Gulley

"Bridge to Tomorrow" ©2011 Niki Gulley
12" x 24" textured oil painting

On a peaceful autumn day last fall, I went out to White Rock Lake and captured this beautiful sunset behind the Dallas skyline. I liked the intricacy of the bridge and how it crossed through the composition, connecting the left and the right sides. The sunlight was peaking through the ironwork and various plants in the foreground were back lit, while the water's surface was shimmering from the low light, spreading vivid colors in all directions. A perfect ending to the day!
