Frilled Tulips by Heather Braman
When I was a girl, my grandfather said I had "busy little hands." I'm a lot older now, but I stil have busy hands. I love to paint just about anything and my favorite medium is acrylic. I'm always enticed by the patterns and texture of fabric, which is why I taught myself how to sew. My husband is amazingly supportive and says I'm "crafty, crafty, oh-so-crafty."
I love to poke about in antique stores and my favorite shops are thrift stores and craft supply.
I named this blog after the understated beauty of the Tallgrass Prairie that can be found in the Flint Hills of Kansas. That's the heart of Tallgrass Design: Understated loveliness that provides comfort and inspiration. Thanks for stopping!

I was looking at some of my images and was really surprised to see how many bird and animal paintings I have done. I thought today would be a good day to post a few of my old time favorites.
It is always interesting and educational to review the painting journey that you have been on. I like to line up older paintings, chronologically, which helps me to see the improvements I have made and the ones I would like to make in the future. Always an interesting exercise.

Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

I love to paint the sky, but this is my first daily painting of ONLY sky.
It was really quite fun as I concentrate more on values than getting really accurate shape. I like the texture and will definitely do this little exercise again.
It's nice to have a model that is always available and changes each time you paint it.
What are your favorite things to paint? I started off with simple still life, went through a flower stage and now find I am doing more landscape than anything else. My goals this year are many. I want to paint more larger pieces, more figurative pieces and to add quality giclee' prints to my website.
I hope I can stay on track. Do you have a plan for where you want to be 12 months from now? I would love to hear about it.

This painting recently SOLD. She's featuring here as her Swan Song from my Collection. Inspired by a huge arrangement sent to me by dear friends who could not make it to a solo exhibition of my paintings in Ireland. I kept her as mine for a long time until, like a crystal, she needed to find her new home. I'll miss her.

I am a graduate of the College of Design, Art and Architecture at the University of Cincinnati, with a major in the History of Art, 1977. Later, I studied printed textile design at Parsons School of Design, in New York. Immediately afterward, I began free lance work for several design studios in the garment district of NYC, where I did re-coloration work for printed apparel fabrics, and sold my own designs through Bread and Butter Designs,also located in New York. In addition, during the 1980's and 1990's, I designed a number of needlecraft and stencil books for Dover Publications. Currently, I am working on a series of exotic birds and other animals done in acrylic paint, with a palette knife, for texture and brilliant color. I consider my paintings to be representational or impressionistic in nature, and I use fantasy colors because what I see often makes me feel these colors,and what would make an interesting composition, rather than using realistic colors.

On the Snow Trail by Ann McCann 20 X 20 Oil
It occasionally snows in Dallas. Even with a big snowfall, it soon melts. However, it is beautiful while it lasts. I love the deep blues and purples in this scene, contrasting with the bright whites and blues of the snow. This is a path that I would follow into the woods. How about you?

"Familiar Forces (Cill Rialaig)" by Lynda Cookson
I have spent three residencies at Cill Rialaig, a restored famine village in Co Kerry, Ireland, during the last few years. The village teeters on the edge of a cliff overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay. My residencies all took place during January ... a very wild, windy, rainy, sometimes snowy, and of course cold, time of year.
For those of you who can feel or appreciate the spirit world, with a children's graveyard less than a kilometre from the stone-house famine village, and with the weather so wild, you can imagine how I felt those presences!
I produced a collection of acrylic paintings in that time, all very loosely painted, with flicks of the paint brush ... and most of them came out very representative of past lives indeed. This is one of them.

It has been some time since I posted an abstract......this week I was in the mood to do some non-representative work.
I enjoy abstract, at times, as it gives me the opportunity to concentrate on composition and color relationships. No drawing distractions!
I started this piece by creating lots of texture on the canvas, followed by a coat of acrylic cad. red. Then the fun began as I brought out my oils and just pushed paint around until I was happy with the results. It was that same feeling I used to get when I would stomp around in rain puddles as a kid.
I know I will soon go back to representative work, but today, I am happy with this,

Morning Dogwood by Chrys Wilson
On this Easter weekend, I thought I would share an Award Winning piece that is a combination of palette knife and brush. This was painted in four layers with the palette knife being the final layer. There is an illusion of morning mist in the background with a few trees peeking through. It has a calmness about it that is just beautiful. I hope you enjoy.
