A palette knife plays an important role in creating the abstract painting demonstrated in this YouTube video tutorial. I've discovered that the palette knife is the perfect tool for drizzling tar gel onto YUPO synthetic paper. After the tar gel dries, I apply watercolor paints with a brush.
Tar gel is an acrylic medium that holds its shape on the paper. I dip a palette knife into a jar of tar gel and then, holding the knife above the paper, let the gel run off the tip. I quickly move the palette knife back and forth above the the paper so that the gel will form lines and designs on the surface.
