When I was a child, growing up in Ohio, this was my dream.  Tropical waters, palm trees, sailboats.  I am blessed that my dreams came true.

I always want to put a little texture in my paintings.  My palette knife is my favorite tool.

Tropical Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Sunset in the Wetlands", 6x8" Oil Painting

This tropical landscape painting depicts the sinking sun and reflections on one of Florida's many waterways. This particular wetland is located between Florida's intracoastal waterway to the west and the Atlantic on the east, on the barrier island that runs down the east coast of Florida. It's a particularly fascinating place as the two bodies of water are less than 1/2 mile apart.

I am just returned from a month in our North Carolina mountain home.  We usually don't stay that long, so, this time I took all my painting supplies and was determined to paint while there.  I finally accomplished this painting, but let me tell you it was not easy.  I could not find the perfect lighting, the perfect place to work (we just put in all new flooring which would not look good with oil paint splattered all over it).  All in all, I did not feel comfortable and was sooooo happy to return to my studio in Florida.  This is something I will have to get used to as we will be spending much more time in the mountains than in past years.  Studio painters (like me) get so spoiled.....I almost wish I were a plein aire painter who can paint anywhere and under any conditions.

Passion Flower Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Kathy's Passion Flower, 6x8" Oil

Passion flower is such a unique plant...it almost looks alien!  This passion flower painting is  from my friend, Kathy's garden.

With it's weird shapes this plant looks like it has to be man-made, or at least, from outerspace....but no.  Nature is indeed amazing!

It has all my favorite colors, from red violet, to blue to purple. I felt I had to try to paint it because that's MY passion!

Thanks for reading my blog today.  I hope you have some passion in your life today.

Tulip Painting, Floral Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 6x6" Oil on Canvas Panel

I found a video on Youtube of Nancy Medina, the flower queen, painting a tulip.  So, I decided to try painting along with the video.

Of course, her technique looks very effortless, which didn't happen with me.  Of course, her results are perfection, which didn't happen with me.  Of course, she has done it thousands of times..........ditto.

All in all, I think it was a fun experience and I am hoping I found a little something that I can continue to use.

We are so fortunate to be part of the first generation of artists with all the wonderful learning experiences the internet can  provide for us.

Have a great day!

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Orchid Painting, "The Perfect Gift", 6x8 Florial Still Life

Well, for me, this orchid was the perfect gift, from my dear friend.

I wanted to paint it, so I set it in front of a north facing window, allowing natural light to flow in behind it.

The composition was a little tricky, but I think I pulled it off okay.  I really enjoyed painting this one.  I just set back and relaxed, and before I know it, I had completed this sweet little piece.

I almost always show my paintings in a simple black frame.  I don't want the frame to distract from the artwork and I think it makes the colors really pop.

Thanks, for reading my blog today.   Don't forget to water your plants!

Small Rose Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "A Rose by Any other Name", 6x8" Oil

This is my third in a series of rose studies, worked with a palette knife.  I enjoy working with a knife to get the texture and feel I am trying to convey to the viewer.

The texture of the knife makes me want to reach out and touch the painting, a big no no in galleries and museums, but a feeling I would like to convey to the viewer.

I am trying to bring a larger variety of marks to my palette knife paintings to give them more interest and variety.  I am finding it is hard to break old habits.  To me, the joy of painting, and the frustration of painting, come from a constant effort to improve.

Have a wonderful day!
