Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

I really got into this palette knife painting yesterday at the studio. The basic shapes did not change, but the colors were all mixed, and layers of thick oils give this canvas texture. I have so much paint on the canvas, it will take a long time to dry. Here are a few pics of my progression with this painting:

Drawing out the big shapes on the canvas...I usually do this with a filbert brush and paint.

Covering the canvas with paint...filling in with bold colors. Making sure that I like the shapes and placement of them.

Using several different sizes of palette knifes, working with the paint, moving it around on the canvas. This stage of the painting is so much fun! I can't remember a time that I didn't have an artistic pursuit but I found my true love with painting. Although I enjoy exploring with different techniques and materials, I primarily work in oils with an abstract style. Thick paint placed with a palette knife and strong geometric shapes are often found in my paintings. After earning a degree in Business Admin/Marketing, I went on to several "Big Girl" corporate jobs and then owned and ran a design business in Hawaii, importing antiques from the mainland. My education was rounded out through the UC Berkeley Extension Art Program and the College of Marin Art and Design Program. I am fortunate to have had wonderful instructors as well as the insightful critiques of my fun, fellow painters.

A Univ of MO grad with a BA in graphic design/photography teaching her to discover true light and its attributes to landscapes-seen in her photos and carried over to her painted canvas. Pratt started her own business in '03 where she is able to spend time with her children.“My boys inspire me to recreate the art I enjoyed as a child,creating new perspectives using color and painting techniques.She has found inspiration from other abstract artists,S. Spillar(MO),A.Tuso(AZ),E.Chapman(MO.Her interest in these artists lead her to become involved with a nationally recognized group known as the “Daily Abstract Painters.” She is in her second year with DPAG whose works are featured in “American Art Collector” magazine.Pratt has been twice featured in the magazine’s “Sold” section. She has also been in South West Art Magazine and is a Contemporary Fine Art Intl juried “Signature”artist.Her paintings invoke senses of emotion and feeling.“A majority of my pieces have deep personal meaning.It takes a few of life’s rough patches to create my best work. My palette is reflective of those times,and it is important to relive those moments in a reflective manner.”
