Daisies and Pumpkins and a Dallas Arboretum Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Class Demonstration

Daisies and Pumpkins was one of my six demonstrations in oils from fresh flowers in Rockwall, Texas last weekend. Tomorrow I fly to Kansas City to teach, and I'm excited to see what kind of beautiful colors we can rustle up at the local flower shops and nurseries. Last year we found hollyhocks and you may recall we painted a red vase that belonged to Connie Turner that was dappled with tiny little flowers (the same red vase that I greatly admired, and said a tearful goodbye to when I left!). Stay tuned to the bloggy for postings from Kansas City, and all the early fall colors your heart desires!

In the meantime, if you haven't been out to see the incredible pumpkin display at the Dallas Arboretum, this is a great time to visit. I'll be teaching my only one day class there October 25, so if you'd like to get a sample of what happens in one of my workshops, why not join me in the most beautiful garden in Texas! My new DVD

Raspberries and Creme White Daisy was painted to make a point. Push color to its limits. Put in something unexpected. Shake it up a little. Let your brush cut loose. Paint like no one is watching, no one is judging, and it's just you and your favorite friend in a room with tons of colorful paint, brushes, and canvases in stacks up to the ceiling. Read more....

Eucalyptus and Daisies - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

My new DVD

Eucalyptus and Daisies was one of my class demonstrations in San Diego last week, starring my favorite little sugar bowl and a borrowed vase from a friend. I love the sugar bowl so much (purchased from Hobby Lobby with my half price coupon!) I actually bought two of these little guys, in case one ever gets broken en route to a workshop. In my demo painting, I wanted to give the white pitcher minimal frills, so it would not attract too much attention from the daisies, and I chose the eucalyptus greenery deliberately because I knew the cool teal greens would set off the hot pink flowers. I always try to find ways to be a little strategic in setting up my arrangements, and lots of these tips are shared on my new art DVDs. I have one seat left in my November San Diego class, and this will be my last marketing class so I sure hope to see you there! Read more...

Duet Daisies and Frogs in the Garden - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

My new DVD

Duet Daisies is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, featuring a little dance of cool and warm violets in a breezy garden. It was a warm one in my own back yard garden today, although a nice thunderstorm drifted in during the afternoon hours to give the tree lizards a drink. I had a visitor last night that I've never before seen here in Flower Mound, a nice large toad was hopping around my flower beds, looking for June bugs. I turned on the hose to give him a wet puddle in case he was thirsty, and asked him to be sure to eat some of those pesky mosquitoes for me.

My new hydrangea DVD

Daisy Hearts and Delphs is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, another large canvas after weeks of small paintings. I felt the need to stretch those brushes! I couldn't decide whether to subdue the pinks on this one, or keep them full blast. Thanks to my Facebook friends who made some great suggestions and - the vote to keep the pinks strong was unanimous! I carried the orange around by moving it into the belly buttons of the daisies, and then scattered pink petals on the tabletop corners, too. I like to think of this part as getting my chicken out, strapping his boots on, and letting him walk that color around the canvas. That's my farm girl roots showing a bit...
