Blueberry Fields Forever shall soon be traveling to a new home in Iowa for a lovely lady who wished for a memento of Texas. I spread the paint thickly, and pulled all the crayons out of the box for this one, as my muse/friend Martha likes to say. In begin all of my paintings with thin transparent paint, ending with thick, fat strokes of pure color. What a joyful task it is, this gradual and strategic construction of powerful pigment. You can see how this occurs, step by step, in my new video.

If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly, like a millionaire intent on going broke ~ Brenda Francis

Feather Blue Hydrangeas is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, one of a series of new hydrangeas under way, in celebration of my colorful container garden this month. We had more rain in North Texas today, so I'm hopeful my blue and fuschia crop of these blossoms will continue for at least  few more weeks. Here's a secret about hydrangeas, that most of you who grow them may already know - in the center of every little cluster is a little belly button. Don't forget to include that small but important detail in your paintings, to give them that little extra zing of authenticity. Stay tuned for more hydrangeas to come!

Blue Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers to paint, and my garden is filled with them this week, thanks to more rain in North Texas today. The pinks are glorious, but the blues are my favorites.  It's been a busy weekend, with lots of excitement in the studio - yesterday my first full length instructional video launched. I did attempt to explain the significance of this milestone to my studio helpers, but they insisted on early lunch and afterward promptly collapsed into snoring heaps around my feet. Read more...

A New Hydrangea Video and Violet Horizons - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Violet Horizon Purple Hydrangeas

Oil on Archival Panel

Since my purple brushes were warmed up with irises this week, I dipped into the same warm violet and cool violet piles and created Violet Horizon Hydrangeas, including a cameo appearance in a small way by Big Blue, my blue glass vase. This seems the perfect time to launch my first online painting lesson, Blue Lace Hydrangeas, since we are in our purple zone this week - Click the link below to see the free trailer for my new video, just launched today. Thanks so much to all my flower friends who patiently waited while I fluffed the fluffy parts and polished the sparkley bits!

Blue Lace Hydrangeas will be the first in a series of lessons that will be available initially as online classes you can view on your smartphone or computer, and later will also be offered in DVD format.
