Hookers and Boats by Lynda Cookson
From my years living in the West of Ireland, it was always so special to spot a Galway Hooker plying the waves, often between the Aran Islands off Galway and into Galway Bay. I believe there is still at least one enthusiast still making and restoring Hookers.
Years ago, in the area we lived in (Connemara) the Hookers would be used to ferry turf (peat) and supplies from the mainland to islands like the three Aran Islands. I watched a video once of an old movie made whilst towing a horse across the bay between the islands and Galway. I didn't much like that, feeling awful for the poor horse, but those days were much harder than now, in that respect, so perhaps I shouldn't judge!
I've popped in a couple of watercolours of boats amongst the Hooker paintings below.

White Display, by New York artist, Celeste Plowden
I learned the art of acrylic and pastel painting through private instruction, after having spent my career as a designer of printed fabrics in the New York market place. I am a graduate of the College of Design, Art and Architecture at the University of Cincinnati, with a major in the History of Art, 1977. Later, I studied printed textile design at Parsons School of Design, in New York. Immediately afterward, I began free lance work for several design studios in the garment district of NYC, where I did re-coloration work for printed apparel fabrics, and sold my own designs through Bread and Butter Designs,also located in New York. In addition, during the 1980's and 1990's, I designed a number of needlecraft and stencil books for Dover Publications. Currently, I am working on a series of exotic birds and other animals done in acrylic paint, with a palette knife, for texture and brilliant color. I consider my paintings to be representational or impressionistic in nature, and I use fantasy colors because what I see often makes me feel these colors,and what would make an interesting composition, rather than using realistic colors.

I have several white horses I have just painted, all with a palette knife, except for around the eyes and nostrils. the palette knife is marvelous for painting any type of animal or bird. here, the mane was done quickly, giving it a feathery movement.

Two brand new 6x6 Oil paintings!
I saw another a hummingbird today while I was trimming the salvia plant
our new garden that has grown unruly. Always a good omen a hummingbird. I
hesitated cutting the blossoms because the bird loves them but the bush
was too large.
I bought tomatoes, strawberries, peas, peppers, a bunch of herbs and
even a rasberry plant and I'll take some photos when I get them in the
ground tomorrow.
I'm so excited about finally having a a spot to grow some vegies!
