Wildlife Painting, Daily Painting, "Great Blue Heron" by Carol Schiff, 11x14x1.5" Oil

It's always tricky trying to do a wildlife painting.  The tricky part is getting that perfect photo to work from.  With this daily painting, I got lucky!

My group, Pieces of Eight, was touring Sebastian, Fl.  On the way home we made a quick stop at the riverside park in Grant looking for wildlife and other scenes.  I was out on the fishing dock and this beautiful Great Blue Heron was standing there on the railing, interested in stealing a fish from the fishermen.  He held his ground when I inched closer, and closer.  I got several good close-up shots.  This was my favorite pose.

I painted this in oil with palette knife and brush, on 11x14x1.5" gallery wrap canvas.  The sides are painted black.  I just love the substantial feel of gallery wrap canvases. If you are interested in a wildlife painting for your home, perhaps you will consider this one.

Thank you for reading my blog today.

Available Paintings by Laurie Pace

This is a painting completed last year. It is indeed available on my website with close up shots, and if you love it and want to make an offer, please email me. It is in my top ten favorite list for the past two years.  I have the photos I took as I worked on this baby and was looking at them yesterday and thought... how did I do it?  It is the Holy Spirit working for sure through my hands.  I often feel I am on a journey without knowing the destination. Having to just sit back and not try to control is always the hardest thing for me.

Cow Painting, Daily Painting, "Bovine Portrait" by Carol Schiff, 11x14 Oil on Linen

A client wanted a cow painting, for licensing purposes.  I usually do daily painting of still life or landscape, but I have to admit I enjoyed both the horse, they originally chose,  and this cow painting.

I painted on Senso linen canvas.  I had a pad of the linen around for several years but didn't really know what to do with it.  I found it had a different texture than the cotton canvas I usually paint on, but once I got into the painting, it was fine.

My next problem was what to do with this unstretched painting.  After surveying several friends, I mounted it on a cradled wood panel.  I was told the perfect glue to use is YES GLUE available at craft stores.  I had some in my stash and I have to say it worked like a charm.  Then I trimmed the edges with a exacto knife and it turned out perfectly.  Now I can use the rest of my Senso linen canvas with no fear!

So, today I stretched my limits, both with the Senso canvas and the cow painting, and luckily both worked out for me!

"Clara Bow" Oil Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to paint something for the Clara Bo and Gatsby Wine Bar opening in the former Liberty Inn location. It has been great being able to follow progress photos (https://www.facebook.com/ClaraBoandGatsbyWineBar) of the transformation. Our friend Matthew Stalsberg has done such amazing work--great quality craftsmanship. My husband and I were lucky enough to have been invited in and the space literally took our breath away.

In January I did five vintage stocking paintings (http://halliekohn.blogspot.com/2014/01/art-deco-project.html) and was so flattered to be asked to do another piece for the space. This painting was inspired by an artist from the 1920s that the designer loves called Tamara de Lempicka. I was also provided a beautiful black and white photo of Clara Bow, the restaurants namesake, that was extremely inspiring to me.

Don't you wish they had taught just one course on art marketing in College? Wouldn't it have been nice if the professor who taught color theory 101 had mentioned in passing one day, oh by the way, when you finally get your own Web site, be sure it's user friendly enough that you can update it yourself. The truth is, no one was selling art 20 years ago, the way art is sold now. Some of us were still pretty excited about email back then. Imagine what art would be like today, if Van Gogh had posted his paintings on Facebook, if Monet had his own Youtube channel, and if Picasso was on Twitter 24/7.

@Braque - Sold another #staircaselady 2day!
Betcha can't top that @Pablo!
.

I lived in the resort community of Santa Barbara, California, when I first began selling my watercolor paintings. I traded some for rent, some for furniture (a particularly hideous oak shelving unit comes to mind). I had my first art show with a class that met in a little building just off State Street next to the rug cleaner's. Our group was led by an exceptional teacher who started each lesson by informing my classmate, Jonathan Winters, of his promise not to disrupt her lesson with any jokes or facial gestures. This was 22 years ago. Read more...

"Aqua Dreams" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Aqua Dreams” ©2014 Niki Gulley
36” x 60” textured oil on canvas

When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.

Feminine Wiles by Sally Shisler

Feminine Wiles - Sold
9x12" Oil on Canvas
This painting of a wild a crazy gal is a blast from the past.  One of my first palette knife paintings, and one of a very few of my portraits painted this way over the years. There is something to it - a painting that expresses her first impression on people.  There were oodles of comments when I first posted this back in 2007.  There will be more work like this as I spend more time in my new studio.  Today is an important day - I'll be painting the walls, clearing the cobwebs, opening the windows (even though it's hot as heck here in Florida) and starting a new journey.

Today also marks the 7 days before my palette knife workshop....

Cerulean Dreams Lavender Fields
by Nancy Medina

Palette Knife/Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Cerulean Dreams Lavender Fields is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, and I'm almost packed for my next workshop adventure in Tennessee. I'm really looking forward to Tennessee, and getting to meet some wonderful artists and paint flowers til the cows come home. However, can you tell I keep thinking about France and Italy? I'm so excited about my new European workshops, I had to drag out all my France and Italy coffee table books today, and my Beautiful France cookbook. I discovered the entire final chapter was on pastries, and so I promptly delivered the book into the trusted hands of my personal chef, (aka the hubby), noting that if he really loved me, he would begin practicing making these pastry dishes pronto. Horse 44 Three Mares in the Pink of Things
8 x 8 inches Oil on Canvas.

Yeah there is 'girl' talk going on here. I debated only a few seconds on this one because I absolutely fell in love with the structure of the horses as they appeared to the paint. The motion of palette knife strokes and blends. The painting is different. The Painting is NOT the same. This piece is for a 'strong of heart' person.

Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.  But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God. Acts 5: 38-39

It brings back memories of a trip I took to New Orleans last year.  We spent the day driving through the surrounding countryside and toured two plantations that bordered the Mississippi levy.

As you can imagine, the grounds were stunning, but I couldn't help but think of the slaves who toiled there.

I painted using both a brush and palette knife.  I love the texture a palette knife brings to a piece.  I think it adds so much interest.

Horse 43 After the Storm

28 x 56 inches Oil on Canvas.
Available Paintings by Laurie Pace

Back in the studio after the Memorial Day Weekend. Terry has been helping me move things around so I can work better and enjoy the space. We hauled a lot of art things I was not using out and several cabinets.

The result this morning was me going in and working on several small pieces for this week. I had a request for a small painting in the same strong colors of Rocky Mountain Sunrise from last week. This is it. My tiny reflective version of the piece. I hope you enjoy this small horse painting as much as I did painting it, with a smile on my face.

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. Acts 20:24

Still life Bottle , Palette Knife Art, "Vintage Bottle" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil Still Life

I have become slightly obsessed with vintage bottles, well, maybe a little more than slightly.  I love the idea of these bottles, most of them reclaimed from the earth, crusty and sometimes pearlized.  I like to think about how they were used when they were new.....and if they have a crystal cross on top (called a cross bottle) all the better!

Purchase here
100 + shipping

This one, obviously does not have a cross on the top.  It does have any absolutely gorgeous color, kind of a cobalt violet.  I am told the it started out as clear glass, but due to magnesium in the glass, has aged into a beautiful hue.

The other thing I love, is painting with wild abandon with loads of thick, creamy, oil paint and a combination of palette knife and brush.  So yes, this little painting hits my buttons on several levels.

Some days, I just go through the motions, and the resulting painting usually shows it,  but this one was pure joy!  I would love for you to pin it!

I'm so excited to announce my first workshop in Tuscany, Italy, June 6-13, 2015, Painting Under the Tuscan Sun! Scheduled strategically to coincide with the heart of poppy bloom season, we'll be in the Chianti region of Tuscany. We'll stay in a restored 12th Century monastery, and take excursions to Siena and nearby hillside villages. I'm hoping to capture dozens and dozens of photos of lavender, too, but I'm not real sure if lavender will be in bloom. You are invited to join me for the painting dream vacation of a lifetime! Just Sold! "Snake Crossing" Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"Snake Crossing" ©2014 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 20" x 24" • textured oil on canvas

We spend a lot of time in the car, between driving across country for art shows, exploring new places for inspiration, and traveling while teaching painting and photography workshops, so in this new series I've felt compelled to capture my views from the passenger seat. This particular painting was inspired by one of our trips out west. Not only do I love the various rock formations in the distance and the dramatic sunset, but I relish the sense of open space after living in a city. Looking out on the expansive horizon, I get the feeling that anything is possible and a new discovery is just ahead. All lines are designed to beckon you into the distance, and an upcoming snake crossing road sign hints that you have escaped city life and are immersed in a vast unspoiled landscape. This low angle of the road combined with energetic diagonal strokes is designed to give you the feeling of freedom while driving cross country in search for whatever your journey holds next.
