The Little Details - By Trisha Lamoreaux

The importance of details can be dissected in writing, parenting, relationships, business, politics and everywhere in between.  In every aspect of my life the magic happens in the details. It can be a quick "Hello" and smile from a stranger or Lucky Charms in bed with my kids.  The bulk of life is pretty mundane for most of us; go for a run, pick up the house, go to work, groceries, fold the laundry, pay the bills etc. But small and simple things make the biggest difference.

Art is no exception. The details are those quiet things that speak to each of us. For some of us it's the lighting. For others it's the dynamics of the color palette or the subject or style of a work of art. For me it's all about the texture. I love messy texture. For those of you that read my blog regularly, this isn't surprise.

I'm a texture junky what can I say?

Recently, I've been experimenting in the studio with textures and even went back to some older inventory to review textures. I'm loving the way the round knife creates the depth of a flower petal. If you were close enough you could pinch the edges with your fingers. I also love how easy it is to create water with a knife.  The reflection and movement of water jumps off the canvas almost effortlessly with a straight edge knife. The puff of a cloud or the gradient in the sky is just a stroke and the direction you hold the knife in your hand.

I was once asked what knife painting is like.  After some thought, I realized it's a lot like frosting a cake with really flexible frosting. If you can frost a cake then you can paint with a knife. Give it a try but here's some helpful hints for painting your own palette knife painting:

1. Choose the right size.
Your going to use A LOT of paint. Start with a small canvas if you don't have a large amount of paint. The bigger the canvas the more paint you're going to use.

2. Variety of knives.
When you're trying to decide what kind of knife to buy remember to get several different varieties. Rounded edge are great for leafs and flowers. Angled edges are good for straight lines and smaller knives are great for precision and on a smaller canvas.

3. Paper Towels.
Mix. Load. Apply x 2. Wipe.
Get a bunch of paper towels. I typically go through 2 - 3 rolls of paper towels per painting. You usually only get...

Autumn Morning at J. Alden Weir Farm by Roxanne Steed

8"x10" oil on Belgian linen mounted on archival panel

"Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Monday was the most delightful day of painting. The Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society planned to meet up at the J. Alden Weir Farm over in Branchville, CT - which is a part of the National Park Service!

"In June of 1882, painter J. Alden Weir boarded a train from New York bound for his modest farm among the hills of Branchville, CT. Once here, Weir and his family transformed their summer retreat into a creative refuge for friends and fellow artists. After Weir, artists Mahonri Young and Sperry Andrews lived and worked here, continuing the legacy of artistic expression that still inspires today."(from the website)

One of best parts of the day (besides getting to paint there) was the tour that the park ranger offered to us as special guests of the park. The home and studio are closed to the public as they are currently under renovation.....but we were allowed to go in and see!. What a treat. She also shared much of the history of Weir and his family and friends. Definitely worth a visit, and I'm looking forward to going back!

Following the tour, we returned from Weir's studio back to the Burlingham House (which was where his youngest daughter eventually lived), I spotted the light coming through the golden trees and knew this would be my first painting here on this location.

What I'm finding truly wonderful as I study more about Weir, is that we today, can go back and stand in some of these same places where he stood to paint. The rocks are still there, the trees are much larger, and many of the pastures have grown in, but so much is exactly the same. What a wonderful welcoming feeling for a painter!

AMERICANA, RETRO MOTEL BY TOM BROWN, CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE

This is another little Mom ‘n’ Pop motel I discovered along a country back-road.

Whenever I come upon one of these treasures I like to sketch or paint it on the spot if time permits. They are icons of a past era, and I have a special fondness for them.

This motel is named simply “STAY AWHILE” and that became the title of this painting too. This is a 6x6 inch oil painting on a prepared panel, ready to frame.

I’ve put this painting on eBay with a very low starting bid. If you like it, place a bid now before I change my mind. (I can’t raise the starting bid once a bid has been placed.) Click here to bid:

Far and Away, Large Marshland Painting by Roxanne Steed

30"x30" oil on 2" deep cradled panel

"Nature is my medicine." -Sara Moss-Wolfe

This painting was one I've wanted to do for a long while now. I have spent so much time working plein air, and in a lot of different sizes. But I have wanted to take one of my smaller/medium sized works and turn it into a much larger painting. Finally doing this enabled me to verbalize the feelings behind some of what I love to paint.

I love to walk/hike around coastal marshlands (all up the whole Atlantic coast). I've always found a fascination with the large abstract shapes of land and water. And, it is wonderfully quiet in any season, just the sounds of nature about you.....and everything else "gets out of your head". I always feel calm, yet invigorated after a hike through these spaces. I wanted this large painting to give the viewer a feeling of being able to walk into that space... to clear their head, the way I do when I go to the woods and marshes.

And while I'll continue to paint plein air as long as the weather allows it, I'm looking forward to painting the next BIG one! Once the paint is dry on this, I'll be taking it outside for a better photograph in natural light.

These cradled panels are quite beautiful as the edges are wood. Once the painting is dry, I'll be staining these edges to deepen the wood tones. For more information about this painting, please contact Roxanne here.

AMERICANA, RURAL MOTEL, TOM BROWN CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE

I discovered this little Mom ‘n’ Pop motel on a country back-road. These relics of bygone days are icons of a past era, and I have a special fondness for them.

Whenever I come upon one of these treasures I like to sketch or paint it on the spot if time permits.

This establishment is still in use. It is named “THE MOON & THE STARS MOTEL” and that became the title of my painting. This is a 6x6 inch oil painting on a prepared panel, ready to frame.

I painted this using the palette knife. I enjoy the bold, clean strokes of color possible with this painting tool. And I like the surface texture on the painting itself. Take a closer look at the detail image and you’ll see what I mean.

Angel Watching, Palette Knife Painting by Judy Mackey

"Angel Watching"
9" x 6" x 1.5", Oil on Stretched Canvas

Somewhat moody painting looking at an angel from behind as the angel watches...I posted this on Facebook and someone mentioned that the angel looked like she was waiting to help someone. Angels probably do wait around so that they are available to help us.

How's your angel? Done anything lately that'd make the angel sitting on your shoulder whisper "don't do it...." as the little devil on the other shoulder presses for you to?

Well, be an angel and spread the word on this - I have a listing on Ebay right now for an angel painting I painted earlier this year - the angel is wearing pink boots and it's called "You wear it Well". 100% of the proceeds goes to Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness. Only a few more days to make your bid and donation. Click here to Bid on Ebay.

Hydrangea Container Garden Step by Step by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Hydrangea Container Garden in Progress

40X30
Palette Knife/Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Nancy Medina Web Site

One of the benefits of teaching a flower painting class is when the surviving studio models decide to hitch a ride home with the teacher. These blossoms are taking up residence in my studio after spending the day being painted at the Dallas Arboretum last weekend by my enthusiastic students. I started my class there on Saturday morning with two demos, one of sunflowers and white daisies, and the last one a 30 minute painting of two hydrangeas side by side, one blue, one purple.

In my studio last night, I decided I wanted to paint them all together in one large container garden painting, but I needed just the right size shelf for my setup. My still life stand was too high, my rolling work table was too low, but my desk was just right! Visit my art blog to see a few photos showing how the sausage is made, along with my painting in progress. I'll post the finished painting for you tonight, so stay tuned!

Reflections on Crystal Cove by Deborah Harold

This is  similar to the painting I recently sold at our annual art show at Cannery Paints in Newport Beach.  It is a closer look and slightly more colorful. It remains my favorite subject and will always be
a special place to me. Today my daughter and friend will go with me for a swim at this very spot and have a heavenly lunch at the Beachcomber Restaurant on the beach.
It will also be an opportunity to take more photos of this most pristine setting.

Row 2 by Janet Bludau, Abstract Palette Knife Paintings

This 6 x 6 Oil on Archival Board Painting is #2 in a series of 3.
The color palette is the same with all three and here is the reason I like doing three paintings in the same palette with a similar composition.........
I do my fair share of art shows.  I often will find that a person is very attracted to one of my 6 x 6's and yet they want something else to "go with it".  If I have 3 paintings to offer, they can either purchase 1, 2 or 3 paintings, and hang them together,  framed separately, or, all 3 can be framed together in the same frame as a triptych.  If you aren't sure what I mean by this, email me and I will send you a photo.
#3 of the rowing series will be posted soon.

I sure am posting a lot of small paintings lately!  One reasons I like these small works is that you can have a much larger art piece by framing in some of the wonderful floater frames I can offer.  Higbee Frames is close to my studio and has a beautiful selection of top notch options.  More bang for your buck, if you will.  Another reason I have been painting small is that I am gearing up for a local show where they have specifically asked for small works.  I will be one of two artists showing and I feel very honored to be selected.  That being said, if you see any of my paintings that you are just wishing were larger, all you have to do is ask!  Email me at:  janethod@aol.com

Painting in Tuscany with Niki Gulley

"View from the Villa, Tuscany"
5" x 7" textured oil by Niki Gulley

Day 3, Afternoon Location – ART TREKS: TUSCANY
with Niki Gulley & Scott Williams

After a busy morning and afternoon in Siena, we were all content to stay at the villa for our afternoon location. With it being warmer today, the pool was calling us so we set up our easels under the beach umbrellas, and started sketching the distant hills, foliage, and stone houses. With a short amount of time, we decided to work small and focus on a simple subject. We thought it would be fun to make this quick study very loose and free. So using palette knives and small canvases we layered in the rolling hills, dark to light, and then added the details on top, completing these fun, spontaneous paintings.

Niki Gulley and two of her students in front of their completed paintings at the Tuscany villa.

That night we ventured into town for dinner, and had the best dessert of the trip, fresh figs stuffed with homemade gelato and drizzled with caramel sauce. It was so good, everyone had to order more for the next night!  A perfect ending to a fun, inspirational day.

If you would like to join us on future ART TREKS to Paris, France in May or Tuscany, Italy in September, visit nikigulley.com/?page_id=1420, which goes into detail about our upcoming Plein Air Painting & Photography Workshops. Early registration deadline for a $500 savings is due today!

Or, if you'd be interested in learning how to paint "plein air" or improve your location painting a little closer to home, visit nikigulley.com/?page_id=13, which tells you about my upcoming Painting Workshop at the Dallas Arboretum and White Rock Lake, Oct. 29th and 30th.

Roses By North Light by Roxanne Steed

12"x12" oil on deep cradled birch wood panel (sides painted, not necessary to frame, but of course you may if you prefer).

Flowers seem intended for the solace of ordinary humanity. ~John Ruskin

I've learned to not always listen to the weatherman. They predicted it would rain all morning and begin to clear in the afternoon. I awoke to find it perfectly sunny and clear this morning, but I had cut these roses the night before. Of course I was determined to paint them. I had re-arranged a bit of furniture in the studio (which I have pretty much abandoned all summer and painted out-side) so I could have just the right natural light fall on them from my north-facing windows (which allows nice even light in all day). Then by afternoon, there came the pouring rains! Glad I didn't listen to that turned around forecast!

ACRYLIC ABSTRACT by OLGA WAGNER

WOW...What a weekend...

Saturday I helped with the setup of the dressage arena for the Equestrian Special Olympics. I met so many wonderful volunteers and also competitors...It was a pleasure to help out at this phenomenal event...Will be there again next year...

Sunday was my first outing at an Art Festival. The weather was perfect...People were great...Definitely worth the time and energy that went into the prep, setup and take-down...Hope to be back next year...

This abstract was finished before the weekend, but I just had no time to post it here. This is a "brother" to the abstract in my last post. Slightly different color scheme, but same approach.

Passing Showers by Roxanne Steed

9"x12" oil on Belgian linen mounted on archival board

"I believe that there is a subtle magnetism in Nature, which, if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright. ~Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau really had it right. When I do get outside to the woods and fields, I really do find it exhilarating (and that I've got myself in the right place). And that's whether I'm painting, hiking, or even taking a short stroll. Lately I've been exploring some additional painting possibilities in our region.

This morning I did take a short trek over to nearby Barn Island, just over in Stonington. I could see that the sky was clearing in that direction, and thought that there would be some interesting cloud cover as the front blew over. It started sprinkling when I pulled out of the driveway, so I wasn't sure if I'd get to paint or just be rained on. But it was a nice heavy cloud cover with band of clearing sky near the horizon. I was really drawn to the way the bands of cloud light reflected into the marsh water pools. On gray days, everything is much closer in value range (and the color can sometimes seem so rich).

Abstract Crystal Cove Afternoon by Deborah Harold

After several days of watching my son play water polo and not painting,
I was a little reticent to jump back into my studio. I decided to paint my comfort which is

So I painted a very abstract piece which was fun and a good way to end a wonderful weekend.

Dory Fleet by Janet Bludau, Palette Knife Boat Paintings

6" x 6"

Dory Fleet is at one of the two Newport Beach piers in California.  The fishermen bring their catch here very early in the morning and it is one of the places we can go to purchase the freshest of the fresh local fish.  It is a busy place with slippery wooden docks and buckets of ice and big knives slicing through,  well,  fish.  I did part of this painting "plein air" which means, outside and at the site, basically.  The Newport Beach City Visitors Bureau called the Southern Ca. Plein Air Painters Association and asked for volunteers to show up at this very "local" spot and paint for their cameras.  I am a member and volunteered!  In a week or two I will post two other paintings I worked on at the same time.  One is of the very famous Crab Cooker Restaurant and the second is of Charlie's Chili Restaurant.  Charlie's is not as well known with the tourists but is a hole in the wall type place at the base of the pier that you just have to know about if you have lived in Newport for any length of time.
Thank you for viewing our blog!

PAINT WITH TOM BROWN ON LOCATION

Because my plein air kit is so compact and lightweight it makes outdoor painting a delight.

Especially at times like this, where I wanted to capture the light and mood of the moment in this 5x8-inch sunset/moonrise painting.

California Artists: My NEW Plein Air Workshop begins next Saturday. Come join the group!

These classes are for all skill levels, from absolute beginners to advanced painters. I give lots of personal attention and we always have a great time.

I’ll teach you how to create solid compositions, how to master color temperature, how to create color harmony, how to work with a limited palette and much more. (I even show beginning painters how to assemble a completely FREE outdoor starter easel.)

We meet 5 consecutive Saturday mornings from 9am to noon at a variety of scenic locations around Orange County, California. The first class will be held October 8 in Irvine, California.

Email me for details if you would like to join us, or to purchase this painting.

Barn Cats by Pamela Blaies

12" x 24"
Oil on Canvas

My parents have some barn cats to keep mice away from the house. They are fun to snuggle if you can catch them. I've been inspired lately by vintage photographs from the early to mid 1900s.  Black and white photos are fun to use as references because I allow my imagination to take me to other places and times as I work to bring scenes from the past back to life onto my canvas. I painted this little girl's cherubic face with extra rosy flush to add a vintage feel to this piece.
