"Panda" Original Oil Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

I am still reaping the benefits of my husbands travels to China. The light captured on these panda photos really appeals to me and I am so drawn to painting them; this is the third painting. There is also the beautiful contrast between what appears to be just black and white, yet is really a gorgeous combination of yellows, browns, purples, and blues.

My husband recently returned from two weeks in China where he performed and took part in many "Building Bridges" activities with other countries. He was part of a group of people who went with the school district to learn and share different teaching methods with each other. While traveling around, some of the group, including my husband, were lucky enough to travel to the panda preserve and learn about caring for these beautiful animals.

This month I am participating in a 30 days of painting challenge through a wonderful artist that I took a workshop with last March called Leslie Saeta. There are hundreds of artists participating; it will be awesome to see all of the entries each day!

This painting was commissioned as a Christmas gift. The recipient took the photo while on vacation in China, and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to paint it. I am so drawn to structures like this, although it was definitely a challenge!

I painted most of this painting from a blurred image so I wouldn't become too overwhelmed in the details. Later I went back and added in the individual posts and rails; this was so helpful. I will have to say that it is paintings like this that help grow one's confidence and push us as artists.

Scarlet Ribbon

Just returned home this week from a few weeks of travelling where I forced myself to relax and take a break from painting.  It was fun, but I had art withdrawals after painting daily for several months. I was happy to return home, get back in the studio and see that Scarlett Ribbon received a FAV15 jury award for June!  I really like the effect here of using my palette knife to create sharp contrast for highlights and some clean edges in conjunction with painterly brush strokes.  Check out the new August Entry HERE.
