I've been known to use the good 'ol trick of cropping when it'll make for a stronger painting. And here that's just what I did. I started with a 12x9" image - painted the entire thing. It was a ballet dancer; not too bad. Buuuuuut - not so great by the standards I've set for myself.  Some artists, being purists, will say that cropping is cheating in a way. A little white lie... But I find it a useful lesson and an adventure in story telling. Each area of a painting has it's own thing going on, but as a whole the essence of the parts should add up to one grand tale.  In this painting, the grandest tale seemed to come from the expressive line along shadow side of her face, neck and chest.  In truth, the rest of the so-so painting took too much away from the important part.  Make any sense? It's very late here - we're going on 3am, so bear with me.

• Announcing one day, 3 hour intensive COLOR MIXING workshops in my studio in Winter Garden, FL!  These sessions are designed to help students prepare for their own paintings that they will paint at home with their premixed palette. This is all about thorough color mixing; not actual painting. Each student will be provided with a high quality color print of their selected photograph with a clear breakdown of which colors will be mixed. Preparing a palette of clean, harmonious color before putting knife/brush to canvas gives you a head start on a successful painting. Workshops are held on the second Saturday of each month.
