The village of Roussillon is set in a stunning location - its red houses built on a hill top contrast strikingly with the dark green woods that surround it. Beneath the village red cliffs plunge down steeply to the plain below. The ochre quarries, which are no longer mined, are open to the public and there is a beautiful path winding round between steep banks of yellow and pink rock, at places forming stacks known in Provence as 'chimneys'.

Roussillon in Summer by Jeannette Johnston

Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas
22" x 15" / 10P
€130
Available to purchase online at

Impressionistic painting of the beautiful little village of Roussillon in Provence.
The houses which take their colours of red, orange, pink, and cream from the nearby ochre quarries overlook a landscape of olive trees and red cliffs. Quiet in the wintertime, Roussillon is a lively, bustling place in summer, visitors thronging into the cafes and climbing up to the top of the former castle to admire the far reaching view.
