I am an American artist and I host a TV Art Instruction show where I teach studio oil painting and plein air painting in the Impressionist style.
I also teach other artists how to paint through oil painting workshops and art instruction CDs and DVDs.
My Impressionist plein air landscapes, still life compositions, portraits and figure paintings have been represented through prominent galleries for more than 20 years.
My paintings are in corporate collections including the City of Irvine, Sears, Standard Oil, and Coca Cola. My work is often seen in leading art publications like Southwest Art, Art & Antiques, American Art Review, American Art Collector, Art Calendar and others.
I am a former president of the Orange Art Association and past member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and Southern California Plein Air Painters Association.

This type of garlic is a speciality of the region, this excert is from "Chocolate and Zuchinni" blog -
"Pink garlic?", you ask, your right eyebrow arched in curiosity. Well yes, it is a unique variety of garlic, grown exclusively in and around the medieval town of Lautrec, in the South of France. Water pounds its way down the falls: cascading, rushing, charging into the riverbed -- flowing over rocks, swiftly moving forward. Untamed, the surge finds its way over, under, around the boulder-strewn river. Tumbling waters drive up mists above the falls, the rhythmic sounds create a soothing harmony below. Autumn’s low light casts long lines through the Aspen trees and glowing verge.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

I
struggled with this painting. The vase and jug are semi opaque and I
had difficulty in getting that across. It's hard when using opaque
paints to give the illusion of transparency. I also found the background
difficult and changed it a few times. Does this one work? The green jug
is made of recycled glass and is not symmetrical. I painted it a couple
of times, before I discovered it wasn't just my painting LOL! What do
you think, should I make it symmetrical?

1533 On the Sandspit Indian River Plein Air Alla Prima
I was on the same spit of land as the bird, I was wondering if the tide would be coming in but I got lucky again it was going out. There is some very shallow water to the left of the bird, that was gone when I packed up to go home.
The painting is 8 x 10 inches oil on masonite, $250.
I was born in Ft. Pierce and lived there all my life. I have an Associate in Art degree from the Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce. I consider myself primarily self taught.I am a member of Plein Air Florida, and the leader of Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast. My paintings are in art collections worldwide.I have co-published an article in Plein Air Magazine. I have contributed paintings to Art for Nature, Heathcote Botanical Gardens, Habitat for Humanity and various other charities.I love painting outside using the painting knife. I love the rich texture and lustrous effects I can get with the knife. My studio is located in my home in Fort Pierce. I use both of my names in my art, Lori McNamara and Lenore McNamara. My mom and I went to Washington DC in August. One place we visited was the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. We spent some time sitting around the fountain in the center of the garden, which was where I captured a photo of this great flower. My favorite part though was discovering the little Pavilion Cafe, a convenient lunch location that just happened to serve icy cold sangria to hot, thirsty tourists.

I sketched this on a canvas early fall. As I return to the studio, I pulled it out and put it on my easel. I picked up my bible and began to graze through the familiar words and my journey took me to 2 Kings and first paragraph in this chapter where Elijah has been told he will go to heaven in a whirlwind. It reminded me of how we all will die one day and we do not ever know how or when. Only God knows. So as I work on this painting, it will be inspired by this reading this morning.
The first layers are rubbed in with Acrylics sealing the canvas and preparing the under foundations of the painting.
And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. 2 Kings 2:1

was actually finished right before Christmas. I'm taking some of those
small florals ever larger. I'm really loving working on the gessobord,
but I know when I go to the super large paintings, I find it better to
work on canvas. The panels get extremely heavy at that size. So I do go
back and forth with surfaces, I have several that I like to work on for a
few different reasons. I'm finding a greater comfort zone combining
brushes with my palette knife work....at ALL sizes that I work in, from
tiny to enormous.

Back on a good painting roll. I really enjoyed my studio time yesterday and am pleased with this painting and the next two I am almost finished with. I had to make myself stop yesterday. I had also promised myself garden time: a bit of cleanup, tending to the compost bin and planting two little lime green ?? by a small fountain.

I can't remember a time that I didn't have an artistic pursuit but I found my true love with painting. Although I enjoy exploring with different techniques and materials, I primarily work in oils with an abstract style. Thick paint placed with a palette knife and strong geometric shapes are often found in my paintings.
After earning a degree in Business Admin/Marketing, I went on to several "Big Girl" corporate jobs and then owned and ran a design business in Hawaii, importing antiques from the mainland. My education was rounded out through the UC Berkeley Extension Art Program and the College of Marin Art and Design Program. I am fortunate to have had wonderful instructors as well as the insightful critiques of my fun, fellow painters.

I've mentioned this a time or two, but it's difficult to contain myself these days. Because each time I wake up now I think, I LOVE my job! Today was the final day of my 3 day North Texas workshop for January, and I had students from South Carolina, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, and all over the Lone Star State. I'm planning some fun giveaways in honor of Valentine's for my next workshop coming right up. Pink colors, candy, spa related gifts, the possibilities are just ENDLESS! I was really blown away by the paintings my students created this week, they produced peonies, sunflowers, delphiniums and vases in multiple styles and colors, they worked from life, and they tackled every subject with enthusiasm. I've shared just a few glimpses of their paintings on my blog today that brightened up the room this weekend, enjoy!

Growing up in the midwest, I loved the first snowfall of the year when everything would get a beautiful dusting of pristine white powder, including even the tiniest of branches in the treetops above. If you caught that moment early enough in the morning before anything had disturbed the intricate frosted web, it was just magical. Then the sun would start rising and peeking through the limbs, and everything would sparkle like diamonds. In Climbing Trees, I wanted to capture that beautiful moment when the sunlight dances through the icing on the treetops and you can feel yourself looking up in wonderment just like you did when you were a kid.

Silver dollars so remind me of my Grandma Cronin and my childhood. I remember watching her and learning how to peel the papers from each side by rubbing it between my finger and thumb. They were nothing special, dried out and almost dirty looking, until those sides were removed. Then, a few seeds would fall out, and there in the middle was an irredescent, translucent, milky white paper--as if by magic.

Playing, staying up way too late and sleeping in was fun over the holidays, but I'm glad to be getting a little order back in my life. My New Year's Resolution is to work on keeping a peaceful balance in my life between all that I am trying to juggle. I find when I am disciplined about the time I spend in the studio, I am able to keep my art from taking away from my family and "mom" time. It worked pretty well this week, except I ignored all housework. Oh well - I guess something's gotta give!
