Blue Times Two Delphiniums was one of my 2 class demonstrations today in North Texas. Tomorrow we paint peonies! It's a bit like winning the lotto to find fresh delphs and peonies in the market in early January. Well, okay, a bit like winning one of those $100 scratch off tickets at least! My next workshop is February 14-16, in Irving, Texas, and you are cordially invited! Put a little joy in your brush and let's make brilliant flowers bloom. My husband and boys often have to deal with me stopping the car or whatever we're doing to take photographs. This photo was taken on one of those super cloudy, cold and windy days in late autumn. I had to stand outside for quite a while waiting for the sun to peek out for a moment to highlight all of the greens and give me some shadows. It was worth the wait.
The painting was done on canvas instead of smooth panelbord as I traditionally use.

There is nothing like a fluffy skirt to make a girl feel dreamy, don't you agree? I've been infatuated with these dress paintings, thinking of them all day long, divining in my mind the idea, back view, front view? wedding dress? brunette? red head??? By the time the palette is set out, colors mixed, and raw canvas is propped before me, I've tied myself into little art couture fits and can hardly wait to get started. Painting each day is my reward, and I'm so very fortunate to have this calling. My studio day ended on a banner note, when I received a message from David Marine of Daily Paintworks notifying me that White Rose Rebellion placed second in their monthly art challenge contest. Such a huge honor, and what a delight to discover the juror is a seasoned plein air landscape painter! We should definitely get dressed up in some frilly skirts and celebrate....

In this painting, I wanted you to feel like a little kid again – laying on the ground and staring up into the treetops without a care in the world. I hope you experience the joy of being surrounded by nature and the beauty in this autumn kaleidoscope of colors.Canvas Prints now Available: I have received so many requests that I am now offering canvas prints of "Kaleidoscope of Dreams." Four 24" x 24" canvases are stretched on 3/4 inch stretcher bars with the image continuing around the edges to form a 48" x 48" quadriptych that does not need to be framed, just like the original . I have also added thick paint in some of the leaves and trunks to add even more texture and making each print one of a kind. Finally, I have coated the canvases with a UV varnish to protect the paintings. The canvases can be hung right up next to each other or spread apart by a few inches to come out to a maximum of 53" x 53". I can also make other sizes or stretch Kaleidoscope of Dreams on deep 1 and 1/2 inch stretcher bars for an additional fee. Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

I used my palette knife all the way on this little panel. I had the reds and oranges bouncing off the magenta/pink background. The birdies on the wire are shades of gray. From My New Winter Line of Fashion and Figure
I began drawing dresses, women's faces, noses, eyes, ears, jewelry, shoes, gloves and all the bling that we adore when I was about 10 years old. When I turned 30, I made it my New Year's resolution to move away from drawing and hop into color and begin painting. It seems a bit like Kismet that almost exactly 20 years later I am returning to fashion.
I get very excited when I start talking about fashion, design, color, form, fabric, texture, and most especially 1940s and 1950s couture. I was getting my hair cut today and having an animated conversation with a friend in the salon. The arm flailing and exuberance got a bit out of control, and finally my hairdresser had to ask me to calm down and sit still lest she cut off an ear or something! Stay tuned, I promise you'll continue to see flowers blooming here. You're just going to get some other cool stuff, too, things we can dream about wearing to the ball at midnight...for example.

Fortunately for us, we only have one day of weather in the 50's and tomorrow they are forecasting 70's with 80's by the end of the week. No wonder, Florida is now the third largest state!

Using Gouache
Gouache is a water-based paint (sometimes called body colour) and is an under-rated medium. It can be used as is for an opaque paint or diluted with water to give a watercolour effect. I normally use it undiluted and lay one stroke on top of another, trying not to disturb the stroke underneath. It has a matte finish which I like.
Through the woods, one of my first gouache paintings, shows a different effect for gouache.
What are ACEOs? ACEOs are small works of art measuring 2.5x3.5inch. They are an excellent and affordable way to start an art collection.

I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit more so than an exact replica of the forest, so I chose to use warm vivid colors and thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance.
