Our relationships in life have colors to me. The calm ones are in soft blues and raspberries and the intense ones are filled with these colors. Maybe people can be described by color as well. I know your mood varies, but what color are you as a person? I have been a violet/purple most of my life, but recently have leaned into the deep dark rich reds.

God is good filling us with the 'colors' we need for the day.

Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. "Golden Dome of Notre Dame" Oil Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

A few months ago a friend of my husband suggested that I paint the dome of Notre Dame. I just remember thinking there was No Way I would be able to achieve that with the knife. Still, I drew it out on a panel, then hid it away in a drawer.

I woke up thinking about that panel this past week, so thought it was about time I give it a try. There has to be a first time for everything, right? Let me know what you think of it!

Queen of the Night Black Tulips is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. Based on my favorite tulips of the Dallas Arboretum, I washed transparent reds into shadow and light, laying in sea greens nearby to push the temperature vibration. I spread the paint like thin strips of butter in a pattern of shattered stained glass. It seemed fitting to put those juicy colors on as thick as possible and make that color bounce!

My goal is to deliberate the balance of representation and design. I am particularly moved by artists who are able to take abstraction further, offering more information with less detail. My work is not to reconstruct or comment on social, natural or cultural reality. While I have great respect for artists who do, I think my path has been towards the creation of studies of time and place using an acute understanding of design and color theory. I believe my work is expressionistic and is differentiated by the unique and arbitrary layering of complex colors. I am directed by the fundamentals of interior design and elements of design, especially intrigued by light. I am powered by my own highly personal vision and I encourage people who view my work to consider my process of decision-making. It is a course that is followed without hesitation and from which; I am not able to deviate. A day of successful painting is it the best of days. It is a selfish endeavor. I wish for the viewer to arrive at a personal determination, framed in their own experiences and therefore, apart from reference, I prefer not to name my work.

I painted this at the cabin we stayed in near Bryce Canyon in Utah. What a wonderful retreat! This 100 year old cabin is one of the original structures on this property. The cabin we stayed in looked as rough at one time, but was restored. The owner hopes to restore this one some day. I was fascinated with the history of this old structure.

While I was painting here I was surrounded by cows. I predict there will be cow paintings in my future!

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating. Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again. It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

BACK BAY IN NEWPORT BEACH, MINIATURE PLEIN AIR STUDY by TOM BROWN

Tomorrow morning I’ll be teaching a Plein Air Workshop at this location for other artists.

While scouting this location in advance I was struck by the lighting and color. I did this quick 4x8-inch study to capture my impression of the scene while the light held.

I happened to have a camera with me and was able to photograph the various stages of the painting as it progressed. I thought you might find it interesting to see how this painting evolved.

Bee's Eye View Purple Poppies is the newest daily in Flower Mound Studio. After several days of working on some colorful fish, I felt the need to break out the flower brushes and make bold color happen on the canvas. Sometimes a bit too much purple is good for the soul! For those who have taken my classes before, I used a bit of negative painting to highlight petals, and warm and cool greens to make the abstract background vibrate a bit.

So many of my little herd have sold already this summer, so I decided to do a few more. This contemporary Horse Painting is number 11 in the summer herd series of 2013. The palette knife paint is a bit thicker than many of these little ones, but I got carried away.

Notice how we do that in life? We get carried away with things. We always are thinking about what would make us happy and things to please ourselves. We seem to forget that God knows what best would please us. He know the secrets in our hearts and the desires we keep hidden from others. At the same time He probably chuckles because we really do not know what is best for us. Just like a Dad with his precious child. It is so easy as a parent to know what your child needs. They are hungry and they want a cookie… but you know they are hungry and they need fruit or vegetables, something healthy.

Maybe it is time to see what God has in store for you.

Day 44, Project 125 Ranch House, plein air paintings BECKY JOY

This composition is reminiscent of yesterday's. I've been using the small paintings painted in the studio as a way to experiment, but also trying to find ones that I want to paint larger. What struck me about this scene was the grasses and the fence posts. I may do something similar to this painting, creating more foreground with the fence posts. I'll have to play with this one some more.

After painting this one, I worked on a couple of plein air paintings that have been hanging around the studio. The first one was painting in Zion last fall during the plein air festival. I liked the overall scene, but felt that it just didn't have the wow factor to it. I painted some shadow in the foreground which helped to bring out the background light. I also softened the mountains and clouds on the left side to help bring out the bright yellows on the right side. I think the painting is much more successful now.

Next up was a painting that had just literally five strokes on paint added to it. I painted this a couple of years ago in Escalante, Utah. I was attracted to the afternoon light and all the junk in and around this little shed. The pile of light colored "stuff" on the right is where I added a little more light. I wanted the attention there and it needed to be lighter to bring the viewer there.

Tomorrow I need to get down to some serious painting. I spent too much time working on my facebook page this morning. Unfortunately, I find the computer and photoshop too much fun.

I finished this painting a few months ago and it had been hanging on my wall. Recently I sold the first painting "The Kiss" - which is similar to this but the woman has a bouquet of flower in the outstretched hand and flowers in her hair.

The couple who bought it said that it remind them of their wedding 10 years ago and this was going to be their anniversary gift to one another....

I am so touched!!!

I decided to make a few changes to this painting because I was not quite happy with the results - some of the changes were - his legs were too skinny so I've given them more "heft" And I blurred his feet area. I changed her hand to be more closed - the first one felt like it looked like a lobster claw...

Anyway - here it is. Kiss Too. (2)

Southern Belle White Koi is a small study painted from my Dallas Arboretum koi photo collection. Work on an 18X24 commission is progressing, and I wanted to play with the green leaves a bit to find the temperatures that would work well on my larger painting. I love combining cool and warm greens to create depth, and a koi pond gives you lots of opportunities to introduce fun colors. These little fish are so fun to paint!

This is the second time I have painted this scene. The first time, several years ago, was a small 5x7. I wanted to paint it larger, but couldn't find the image on my computer. When I finally found it...I didn't have the size canvas I wanted to use (14x18) so, because I was frustrated I did it on the 8x10.

This time I painted with a palette knife and brush. I like the texture that can be achieved with the knife. I also have added some great "ocean" colors to my palette.

Who knows....maybe the next time I paint this scene, it will be an abstract!
