Partly because I've been learning/teaching myself to paint glass and none are suitable for viewing yet. When I am in a Really BIG creative Funk I turn to painting the Sun. I don't know what it is about the Sun? But it is the one thing that I can sit down and start off the same way every time and just let them flow out of me. Each one comes out in it's own unique way and I never have a clue as to what it is really going to look like until the muse says to me I am finished. They don't take me very long to do and they are quite relaxing to paint. I Love their fiery color and the wonderful texture they get due to my use of the palette knife. As the winter solstice is upon us and deep in the dark of the longest night Sing to the newborn Sun and may this fiery Sun Storm warm you from within. I can't remember a time that I didn't have an artistic pursuit but I found my true love with painting. Although I enjoy exploring with different techniques and materials, I primarily work in oils with an abstract style. Thick paint placed with a palette knife and strong geometric shapes are often found in my paintings.
After earning a degree in Business Admin/Marketing, I went on to several "Big Girl" corporate jobs and then owned and ran a design business in Hawaii, importing antiques from the mainland. My education was rounded out through the UC Berkeley Extension Art Program and the College of Marin Art and Design Program. I am fortunate to have had wonderful instructors as well as the insightful critiques of my fun, fellow painters.
Winter Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

I painted this aspen grove with extremely thick oil paint and palette knife. The resulting canvas is loaded with texture, color and energy! I've painted it on 1 and 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars, with the image continuing around the edges so that it can be hung as is frameless for a contemporary look.
This image looks great hung alone to brighten up a little spot, or in a grouping with some of the other seasons I've painted to fill a larger space. Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

Stocking Stuffers - Daily Study #3 by Pamela Blaies

For this little painting, I dug around my fridge to find models. I used a stiff brush for the shadows and the highlights on the table, which let some of the toned canvas show through, giving a textured, transparent look. Then I used a knife for most of the lighted areas of the fruit.

I did this study yesterday using some holly with berries I found in my yard. I focused on being selective in my edges, making abstract shapes on my canvas, instead of painting "leaves." I enjoyed painting free strokes with a brush and adding some texture and sharp edges with the knife. The effect of the teacup in this composition makes the holly seem to dance around in a circle.

true. It's barely snowed here in Colorado, at least where we live and,
although I am a winter baby, I am just not the winter type. So I
painted something to warm me up, get out of the cold with some warm
colors, flaky looking flowers! These three were so much and yet not the
easiest to paint -- it varied by the day.

Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
I took a break from on the collaborative commission that Sharon and I have been working on for the past three weeks and put this canvas on my easel. When I needed a break from the long hours of that job, I worked on this painting. I wanted to paint something loose and colorful, fun and happy. I used two different palette knives on this painting...so there is plenty of paint built up on the canvas. Blending colors, I was mindful that it doesn't take much mixing to create MUD. I also got brave and put my least favorite color in....green. I usually back away from greens of any shade, but cad green was a good choice, especially when it bounces off the cad reds and oranges. I have a series of small Bay Area, California paintings that I have finished with many of them being of lavender fields. I am going larger now, with a lavender field painting measuring 2 feet x 3 feet on my easel!

Another
tale of traveling in Israel. We met up with some of my relatives and
toured around the Mahane Mehuda Market, a primarily open air market in
Jerusalem, loaded with seasonal specialties, lots of action and
activity. The mounds of savory and sweet spices were tantalizing, there
was not only food available to buy but also purses, clothes and other
ethnic or religious items. Just looking at the multitudes of oils,
meats, fish, cheeses, nuts, and cooking/serving dishes was intriguing.
One could sidle up to the olive bars, salivate at the many varieties of
vegetables, fabulous fruits, baskets of breads, dazzling desserts, and
be awed by the wide variety of people in action, buying, selling, gazing
(or being tourists like we were!)

I was born in Ft. Pierce and lived there all my life. I have an Associate in Art degree from the Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce. I consider myself primarily self taught.I am a member of Plein Air Florida, and the leader of Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast. My paintings are in art collections worldwide.I have co-published an article in Plein Air Magazine. I have contributed paintings to Art for Nature, Heathcote Botanical Gardens, Habitat for Humanity and various other charities.I love painting outside using the painting knife. I love the rich texture and lustrous effects I can get with the knife. My studio is located in my home in Fort Pierce. I use both of my names in my art, Lori McNamara and Lenore McNamara. Palette Knife Sunflower Paintings by Niki Gulley

I painted these sunflowers with extremely thick paint and palette knife. The resulting canvas is loaded with texture, color and energy! I've painted it on 1 and 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars, with the image continuing around the edges so that it can be hung as is frameless for a contemporary look.
This sunflower scene looks great hung alone to brighten up a little spot, or in a grouping with some of my sunflower or floral scenes. Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

Each painting is a journey , dictated by primarily by my current thoughts and emotions, be they happy, sad, peaceful or frenzied.It is a mysterious relationship, and is thrilling when the painting finally reveals itself, and our private journey becomes a story to share.
