"Feathered Sky Over the Dead Sea (Israel)"

Well, we're just skipping all over the world these days, aren't we? It feels like an armchair tour to me and it's a blast to relive these memories.  I had the most wonderful time painting this piece of art, absolutely loved it!  It's sort of a different size, just realized that a few moments ago when I measured it, but I don't really care, it's worth a special frame, in my (modest) opinion.  Skies are an absolute blast to paint and who wouldn't like the colors of the Dead Sea?  Much of Israel seems reminiscent to me to parts of Utah, red earth, blue skies.  The top of the sky can be deep blue, the middle almost a turquoise color, and the bottom an aqua, hints of green.  Not to mention different sort of clouds, these being the most intriguing.  I am so happy with this baby!!!!

"Feathered Sky Over the Dead Sea (Israel)", 15.25"x12", unframed palette knife and brush oil painting on panel, $190 plus s/h to be determined at time of sale, Paypal accepted, click button below, or write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information

Original oil painting Starry NIght Harbor Boats by Karen Tarlton

12x24
Starry Night Harbor Boats
Oil
Only one more day left until we turn the page on our calendars
and begin 2013
Hard to believe.
I still believe some of the things that were the most
beautiful last year will be my favorites this year.
For example, I will always Love:
 a Starry sky
Reflective water
Sunsets
A warm fire and a cozy blanket
a really great cup of coffee
a really great glass of wine
a homemade meal
my child's embrace
my husband's smile
May your New year be as great as your old one.

"Antes La Tormenta" by Natasa Vretenar

12"X12" Palette knife painting of harvesters in New Mexico by Natasa Vretenar. I had to get out of my comfort zone for this one - apparently I do not like green! I had to mix most of the green color with blues and yellows. Also, no bright colors because storm is approaching...

New Year, New Beginnings by Pamela Blaies

18" x 24"
oil on linen

I used some new materials and tools on this one. This is my first painting ever on oil primed linen affixed to Gatorboard using brushes and the knife.  It is a little tricky using a knife on board.  Since I've always used the knife exclusively in my painting up until the past month or so, it still feels a bit awkward to work with a brush and I used the knife on the detail work of the face, hands, dress and highlights in the velvet. But I am enjoying the results of my experimentation with using brushes along with my palette knife.  New year is the perfect time for trying out new things.

"April Sunset, Montepulciano, Italy" by Karla Nolan

Sometimes it's just good to keep things simple.  Sunsets are simple, aren't they?  One each day, even if it's cloudy and we aren't fortunate enough to observe them.  We stood at the top of the hill in Montepulciano and waited for this one -- it was unnervingly beautiful, a wonderful way to end our Italian day in a hill town in Tuscany.  Yum.

Palette Knife Sunflower Paintings by Niki Gulley

"Sunny Moments VI" ©2012 Niki Gulley
12" x 12" textured oil on canvas

I painted these sunflowers with extremely thick paint and palette knife. The resulting canvas is loaded with texture, color and energy! I've painted it on 1 and 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars, with the image continuing around the edges so that it can be hung as is frameless for a contemporary look.

This sunflower scene looks great hung alone to brighten up a little spot, or in a grouping with some of my sunflower or floral scenes. Hang them horizontally (like pictured above), vertically, on a diagonal or stacked (as seen below). Take a look at nikigulley.com/the-art/textured-oils/ to find complimentary companion pieces.

A Little Studio Time by Pamela Blaies

12" x 9"
oil

Today I enjoyed some time in the studio after all of the fun family Christmas festivities of the past week. After putting a dark tone on the canvas, I took a cloth and wiped out the areas that I was going to add light. Then I blocked in the shadows, letting the toned canvas show through some of the brushstrokes. Last of all I added the light mostly with palette knife. This is a study for a larger painting I'm planning for tomorrow and I'm really happy with the loose feel of it.

Stars and Stripes, Palette Knife U. S. Flag Painting Judy Mackey

Last week, just before Christmas, I had coffee with Texas Contemporary Abstract Artist, Deanna Kienast who paints huge huge abstracts.   I'd painted several of these "close up" of the American Flag but on a small scale, six by six inches and she suggested I try a larger version.  So here it is.
It is kind of hard to tell what size this is looking at this photo of painting because all of the background is cropped out.

But here is a photo of the work-in-progress painting sitting on my easel:

I'd just blocked in colors.  I actually like the blocked in colors, except that the starts are not quite right yet.

Here is a view of a detail of the finished painting.  There are a lot of unexpected colors in the flag - such as yellow and green:

If you know about my art, you know I love color.  It isn't finished until I hit all around the color wheel.  I have been using a homemade tool that is sturdy and has a sharp edge.  This painting has purple, grey, white, brown orange, yellow.....
I love the way colors touch and mix and the lines made with the tool.

Horizon Series: Abstract Without A Name

I still haven't decided on a name for the contemporary abstract painting.  Maybe someone out there can help me out.  When you stand back and look at the shapes, it looks like a landscape painting with refection in the water.  Or maybe you see something else.  Anyway, this piece is available and would love to have a new home.  Contact Kay at kay@kwyne.com for more information on this painting. "Salmon Poppy Trio" by Karla Nolan

A little more Springtime heading your way -- these three salmon colored poppies were growing in our garden several years ago and were reminiscent of poppies I saw growing in Monet's Giverny gardens.  They are more unusual in their hues, we're used to bright red or orange poppies.  The seed heads are fun to poke into, as the poppy seed is very, very tiny -- think poppy bagels, that's how small these little bits of life are -- and just look at what it gets to be when it's planted and comes full circle!  Beautiful, colorful, happy poppies...

"Salmon Poppy Trio", 8"x6" unframed palette knife and brush painting on canvas, $95 includes s/h in continental U.S., write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information or click on Paypal button below -- and thanks for looking!

Oranges and Indian Hawthorn - Daily Study #4 by Pamela Blaies

8" x 10"
oil

The days are crazy lately, but I am enjoying my little daily studies. I found these beautiful blue berries all over my indian hawthorn bushes, so I clipped some to bring inside to paint. Using the transparent washes that leave some of the toned canvas showing gives an interesting effect when used in conjunction with impasto knife texture in the oranges and berries.

I've been in a creative Funk!
Partly because the days are short and my energy is low.
Partly because I've been
learning/teaching myself to paint glass and
none are suitable for viewing yet.

When I am in a Really BIG creative Funk I turn to painting the Sun.
I don't know what it is about the Sun?
But it is the one thing that I can sit down and start off the same
way every time and just let them flow out of me.
Each one comes out in it's own unique way and I never have
a clue as to what it is really going to look like
until the muse says to me I am finished.
They don't take me very long to do and they are quite relaxing to paint.
I Love their fiery color and the wonderful texture they get
due to my use of the palette knife.

As the winter solstice is upon us
and deep in the dark of the longest night
Sing to the newborn Sun
and may this fiery Sun Storm warm you from within.

Please feel free to hang out in the warmth and energy of this sun
and then pass it along to someone else
who might be in the need of the it's energy as well.
