 Harbor Boats at Sunrise
9x12
Oil
Sailboat Race in Early Morning Light
16x20
Oil

In memory of our trip to Boston, where Mike ran the Marathon in 90 degree heat and 60% humidity....whew! He's tough. While he was doing that, I walked (not ran) down to the Charles River and watched the sailboats dance in the wind! I'm not much of a sailor. I get seasick quick, but I LOVE to watch them and to paint them in reflective light and delicious texture!

Sabots at Newport Beach by Deborah Harold

Bright and colorful palette knife work of the little sailboats called Sabots.
They make such a happy painting and I took my time to be sure to be as loose as possible and not to over paint it which is very easy to do. It may appear unfinished in spots but that is deliberate. To create a more relaxed and casual look I keep some of the artisan board untouched.

Southlake Art in the Square - a SOLD OUT Show by Pamela Blaies

30" x 24"
Oil on Canvas
SOLD

This weekend I was a participating artist in Art in the Square 2012 in Southlake, Texas.   I am super excited to announce it was a SOLD OUT show!  I'm on cloud 9!  My husband was able to be my helper for the first time. He did a great job and made the weekend so much more fun. The weather was nice and I had a fabulous time visiting with collectors and other artists. Here is one of my newest paintings. It was sold today to one of my new collectors - I am honored to have many paintings hanging in their beautiful home.

I love to share my art and inspiration. Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.

This one is all about the light and color. There are many delicate hues that simply cannot be detected on the computer monitor; it really needs to be seen in person. But I must say this is one of my recent favorites. I think you’ll like it. Good luck bidding.

Shortcut: Contemporary Landscape by California Palette Knife Painter Janet Bludau

6" x 6"
Oil on Archival Panal
Painting can be sold framed or unframed
Email me for a photo of it in a handsome Higbee Art and Frame Floater.

This painting was inspired by my days spent living in Maui, Hawaii.
This is an abstract view out the back of my home on the island.  In the distance you saw the ocean and the other side of the island - the road that wraps around and takes you to the Lahaina tourist areas.

CALIFORNIA PALM TREES, 5x7 OCEAN COASTAL SCENE, PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING by TOM BROWN

I painted this at the ocean in Laguna Beach as a demonstration for my Plein Air class Saturday. It's painted on a lightweight fom-cor panel that I gessoed before painting it. The gesso caused the panel to slightly warp, but I think it should easily flatten again when mounted in a frame. This painting is a little gem and I think it will look wonderful when properly framed and displayed in any room.
This auction has a starting bid of just $1, or an instant-purchase price of $65.

Capitan - Lake Grapevine Commission - Judy Mackey

"Capitan"
8" x  10", Oil on Cradled Board

This is the third commission for the same couple.

The husband did call but he wanted a different painting of his sailboat - rather than "his sailboat" he wanted a painting of his son skippering the boat.

Fast forward a month and I'm in my fixer house working on it when we decide to meet.  They wanted to see my house the work I've been doing on it so we agreed that they should come,  I set up the three paintings on a built-in niche in the house to display so that they can view the paintings.  At this point the husband only knows of the one painting and the wife only knows of one painting.  She does not know I did two paintings because I was going to have her choose which she'd like to give to him.

They arrive at my house, they come in, we exchange greetings, we talk about  my house and other gossip, I lead them to the room where the three paintings are displayed.

They both say the like the paintings.  And the husband turns to me and says, "are these other sailboat paintings for someone else - because I really like them and they look like my sailboat, the three would look great together, would I leave your inventory down if I said I wanted all three?"

This surprised me, of course and made the wife very happy as we spilled the beans that one or the other  were a belated Christmas gift to him from his wife.  And I was so happy that they wanted all three.  I loved the surprise on his face and the happiness in his wife's face for having surprised him.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!

By the way, I've purposely spelled captain - capitan...it's the foreign spelling.  I just Googled "capitan" and the image of this painting pops up - how cool!

Cross My Heart by Kay Wyne

Cross My Heart
60" x 20" Oil on Linen Gallery Wrap

This size canvas is really cool.  It is very vertical, and if you have the right wall space, this canvas might work for you.  The paints were applied with a palette knife, so there is alot of texture on the linen.  I have purposely left the natural linen peaking through, giving the eye a rest.  Thanks for viewing this blog....kay@kwyne.com.

Path To Heaven by Kay Wyne

Path To Heaven
48" x 48" Original Oil on Heavy Duty Canvas/Gallery Wrap

This is a neat size canvas.  It is large enough to go over a sofa, or just the right size for a medium to large wall space.  I really focused on the color palette for this painting.  It is natural for me to use vibrant, bold and contrasting colors when I paint.  I wanted a natural, harmonious, and earthy color scheme.  I was wanting to jazz it up with some blues, purples, reds and turquoise.  But to achieve a calm mood, I kept the colors under control.  The first thing I did was to paint in blocks of color with a very wide brush, then started layering in the mountains with a large palette knife.  I used two knifes for most of the application of paint.  It is layered on the canvas, and built up with lots of texture. Thanks for looking at this blog and my art.....Kay at kay@kwyne.com or 214-532-0325.

Poppy Passion ©2012 Niki Gulley

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. So in Poppy Passion, I combined memories of places I’ve been with intense saturated colors to convey that joy I feel when I come across a gorgeous field of poppies.

Palette Knife Painting Commission of Lake Grapevine Sailing - Judy Mackey

"Lake Grapevine Sailing"
8" x 8 ", Oil on Canvas

Last year a friend of mine took a sailing class on Lake Grapevine.  He liked it so much that he bought a sailboat.  In one of our email exchanges he mentioned that he might ask me to paint his sailboat.

Last December, his wife, seeing our email exchange decided to surprise her husband with a painting since he'd not gotten around to sending me photos or commissioning me.  It would be too late to have it ready by Christmas but that was OK, she said and sent along several paintings of him sailing solo.

I didn't know which to paint so I painted two different views.  Sometimes I like to do that, especially if the work I'm doing is in a small scale format, and let the client pick which they'd like better.  So yesterday's post with the painting of the sailboat and today's sailboat is for the same couple.

Although the painting would not be in time for Christmas, she still wanted to keep this as a surprise for her husband so we talked on the phone on the sly, deciding on sizes, etc.

About a week later, she calls me rather excitedly to tell me that her husband would be calling, finally, with a commission for a sailing painting but I was to not tell him about her commission and do whatever he wants - even if he might be emailing me the same photos.

I'll tell you the "rest of the story" in my next blog post..

Crystal Cove Day by Deborah Harold

This 8x8 on Museum quality panel is of the pristine beach at
Crystal Cove State Beach in Orange County California.
I used a larger knife to make it as loose as possible and my palette
was influenced only by the photo I took. The turquoise structure is a landmark at the
beach. There are some spots that I left unpainted to add to the vintage and rustic look.

Tree Art by Jill Saur

"If you reveal your secrets to the wind, you should not blame the wind for revealing them to the trees."
- Khalil Gibran

My 8"10".5" oil palette knife and brush painting, "Relinquished", is richly textured on the trees, revealing their "bone structure" against the value tones of winter. The title suggests that place in life where we relinquish ourselves and open up our hearts and minds to fresh inspiration and new possibilities.

I love aspens in winter. Their beautiful white trunks and dark branches mingle with the dark shadows cast upon the white snow, creating a profound beauty that is best experienced in silence.

Lake Grapevine Commission, Judy Mackey

"Lake Grapevine"
8" x 8 ", Oil on canvas
Commission - SOLD

I haven't been taking my own advice.  Blog often and visit other's blogs and leave comments.

I bought a house last year which was not in the best of state.  It had good bones, i.e. no issues with foundation and the roof is fairly new.  I was going to re-sell it right away so I left it vacant for the past year.  At the beginning of this year, I realized keeping it vacant and not updating it was not helping it sell so I decided to fix it up and now I've decided to live in it.

Fixing a house to re-sell and fixing a house to live in is a little different.  There are things I've been doing to the house to make it more comfortable.  This has been eating up a chunk of my time and sadly I've put my blogging on hold.

It is a little hard to get back into the groove of blogging...it will be a challenge.

Blazing Transitions II - New birch painting by Niki Gulley

Blazing Transitions II ©2012 Niki Gulley
48" x 36" • Textured painting on canvas

I used to love it as a kid when my parents would take me to the forest preserves near our home outside of Chicago. We would spend the whole day bike riding, picnicking and being immersed in nature and I relished this time with my family. In Blazing Transitions II I wanted to recreate those warm memories, choosing reds and yellows of autumn to heighten those happy feelings and using energetic strokes with my paint reminiscent of a carefree, simpler time.

Dusk On The Eastern Shore, Virginia by Roxanne Steed

Available for purchase from my website.

8"x10" oil on canvas mounted on archival panel

Can you be in love with a place?? I drove down from Connecticut to Virginia on Monday to visit with my painter friend Norma Wilson. When I finally reach the Eastern Shore of Virginia, the sun is a bit lower in the sky, and the farm fields are rich in shadow. The cool blue tones reflect off the tin roofed barns & silos. The storm clouds from Sunday were still lingering, as the sun tried burning through the remains. The last bit of daylight glancing across these acres of flat coastal farm land is full of color. As I reach Cape Charles, just on the north side of the Chesapeake Bay, I look forward to that first glimpse of water! Heading up on the first huge bridge span past Fisherman's Island I look left to count the huge container ships in outer part of the bay. There were eight out there yesterday. Am I a bit nervous about passing a semi head on in the tunnel? Well, yes... but as I leave the second tunnel, I'm closer to my destination, the place I enjoyed living for so many years.

Reconnecting with your artist friends is such a treat. I've had a wonderful day today getting together with my old painting buddies Norma, Barbara Mastaglio & Scott London.

Now, I've been back from convention for a week, and still no posts? Yes, I've been unpacking, re-packing and reading my notes from that week - I do still have lots to share!

Heightened Awareness III - New aspen painting by Niki Gulley

Heightened
Awareness III ©2012 Niki Gulley

48" x 36" • Textured painting on canvas

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. I chose vibrant, cheerful yellows contrasted against a violet blue sky filled with big, puffy clouds. And, by arranging the aspens in a circular pattern heightened by thick, curving paint strokes, that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery are enhanced.

Crystal Cove Abstract by Deborah Harold

Historic Crystal Cove in Southern California is gaining in popularity.
People are drawn here to re-live Old California and all it's charm.
I love to paint the various colors there. It takes me back to the days of driving south on PCH and seeing the horses grazing and the ocean beyond. If you were really focused you could just make out the tiny beach shacks nestled into the hillside with the Pacific Ocean just beyond.
The cottages are now available to rent and are historic landmarks.

Sunflowers Brighten My Day by Pamela Blaies

Oil on Canvas
24" x 18"

Painting sunflowers always makes me smile. I was happy to find these the other day in the floral shop. Their sunny yellow petals partner perfectly with this blue bottle. I wanted you to feel the joy and peacefulness of walking through the forest ablaze with color on a beautiful autumn day. All To Yourself Palette Knife Contemporary Abstract Landscape Paintings by California Painter Janet Bludau

14" x 14"
Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas
Nothing better than a beach all to yourself.
This one comes painted in thick strokes with several of my favorite palette knifes.
My paintings lately have several layers.  One reason is that I have been cleaning house a bit which means going through my studio and pulling older works that I feel are no longer a good representation of my work.  Sometimes I may keep a few of the lines (composition), sometimes it really is only the
palette (colors) that change and then there are other paintings that get completely painted over
(full face lift!)

The color and texture of these eucalyptus trees caught my eye. They stand along the border of a local farm, planted generations ago as a wind-break for the crops.

I've always been attracted to their multi-hued, highly-textured trunks and decided to set up my pochade easel here and paint them from life (known as plein air painting).

The rich colors of the trees contrast with the very pale colors in the sky, which adds extra interest to this little gem. I was pleased with this painting and I hope you like it too.

Thanks for stopping to look.
